Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to address the noted gap in comprehensive overviews detailing the developmental trajectory of Islamic finance (IF) as an interdisciplinary academic field.
Design/methodology/approach
The study introduces a unique approach using the combined methodologies of co-word analysis and main path analysis (MPA) by examining a broad collection of IF research articles.
Findings
The investigation identifies dominant themes and foundational works that have influenced the IF discipline. The data reveals prominent areas such as Shariah governance, financial resilience, ethical dimensions and customer-centric frameworks. The MPA offers detailed insights, narrating a journey from the foundational principles of IF to its current challenges and opportunities. This journey covers harmonizing religious beliefs with contemporary financial models, changes in regulatory landscapes and the continuous effort to align with broader socioeconomic aspirations. Emerging areas of interest include using new technologies in IF, standardizing global Islamic banking and assessing its socioeconomic effects on broader populations.
Originality/value
This study represents a pioneering effort to map out and deepen the understanding of the IF field, highlighting its dynamic evolution and suggesting potential avenues for future academic exploration.

Abstract
Purpose
This study proposes a method for analyzing the sustainability of companies according to the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE B3) while considering environmental, social and governance (ESG) dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach
As a quantitative and descriptive work, our study is based on analyses of responses to ISE B3 questionnaires. We consider 12 scenarios involving the allocation of different weights to important ESG dimensions and use the TOPSIS multicriteria decision-making method to evaluate companies in Brazil.
Findings
The results provide empirical evidence on the importance of balanced approach among the ESG dimensions and reflect the need for regulations and incentives to promote balanced ESG practices. We also identify companies with consistently good sustainability practices, such as Natura, those that deliver poor performance, such as Iochpe-Maxion S.A. and Azul S.A.
Research limitations/implications
We contribute to the literature by integrating a multicriteria methodology into the assessment of corporate sustainability, demonstrating the effectiveness of TOPSIS in different scenarios. We emphasize the importance of balancing the ESG dimensions, and in doing so provide novel perspectives in research.
Practical implications
Our findings offer a practical framework for managers to evaluate and refine their ESG strategies by using benchmarks from industry leaders. Policymakers can use them to formulate regulations and incentives that promote balanced ESG practices.
Originality/value
Our work clarifies the application of TOPSIS to several ESG-based scenarios and presents a comprehensive strategy for evaluating corporate sustainability. Our model can be reproduced and customized in diverse settings and contributes to the literature on corporate sustainability.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to report on a university’s internally funded research that was set up to examine the success of assessing learning within inclusion strategies across business studies courses. It also presents the responses that were needed and highlighted as a result of the disruption to students’ learning by the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Design/methodology/approach
Within the social mobility model of disability, people are disabled by the barriers they face, not their impairment. A multi-method, qualitative approach was undertaken, with our discussion framed from within a reflective critical, conceptualised and sociological perspective.
Findings
While the findings revealed how the researched university had made considerable progress in many aspects of its inclusion strategies, the research also revealed some further barriers to inclusion. Some of the barriers were shown to be “cracks in the digital curriculum” that affected not just disabled but all students, whereby students were unintentionally excluded. In this article, we report on how the university had responded to students’ requests, and through a series of small steps, we discuss the positive impact of these actions. Although the changes instigated did help to improve inclusion, the small steps taken also highlighted the need for much more work to be undertaken on the journey to a fully inclusive university. The recent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic forced and/or accelerated the implementation of digital learning. This, in turn, instigated a rise in the awareness of mental illness and the effects of social isolation, which is now much higher than pre-COVID-19.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of the study was that the sample was small; however, the in-depth qualitative approach showed how the issues that had been problematic had been resolved and illuminated the further areas for future research.
Practical implications
The research reported here presents the practical steps that were taken in response to the students’ inclusion requests. The students’ requests were addressed, where practical and/or possible, for students to have assessment choice, further support from the well-being team and a further strengthening of local partnerships with the National Health Service and local charities.
Social implications
The research supports inclusion initiatives in higher education and society.
Originality/value
This study strengthens and/or builds upon the existing literature on the impact of COVID-19 on the teaching and learning of all students, and specifically those with invisible disabilities, by presenting the small steps in changes to the curriculum that can improve inclusion practices.

The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance to universities revisiting their international partnerships involving travel by relaying the experiences, which saw marked changes via the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper compares the mechanics, costs, preferences and performances of students in a Germany-based MBA program, partnered with the AACSB-accredited US institution, after increased reliance on a blended program model.
Findings
A preference emerged for less international travel by students and fewer face-to-face meetings with instructors’ traveling internationally. Student performance with the revised model of the program improved in regard to grade point average, but major field test performance remained similar. At the same time, students report a bit better satisfaction with the structure of the program while travel cost savings were realized.
Originality/value
This case study describes the specific experiences, which may suggest program development for other, similar partnerships.

Abstract
Purpose
This study explores the factors influencing knowledge hiding (KH) in international construction projects (ICPs), focussing on the role of ethnic minorities (EMs) and interpersonal distrust (ID). It also aims to understand how these factors influence KH and explore the mediating effect of ID on the relationship between EMs and KH.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey questionnaire was developed and distributed to professionals participating in ICPs. We used structural equation modelling (SEM) to analyse 294 valid responses, examining the effect of EMs, ID and demographic variables on KH behaviours. Our approach integrates insights from social identity theory (SIT) and actor network theory (ANT) to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the observed dynamics.
Findings
The findings reveal that EMs significantly influence KH behaviours, with ID partially mediating this relationship. Additionally, demographic variables such as gender and age also play significant roles in KH behaviours. However, the degree of education did not show a significant impact on KH. Our results emphasise the critical importance of addressing ID and fostering inclusive environments to reduce KH.
Research limitations/implications
While our study sheds light on the complex dynamics of KH in ICPs, further research could explore additional contextual factors and organisational influences. While our study emphasises the importance of inclusive practices and trust-building to mitigate KH, it also recognises the need for a deeper understanding of power dynamics and organisational contexts.
Practical implications
Our findings underscore the importance of creating transparent and inclusive cultures of knowledge sharing (KS). Implementing inclusion initiatives and providing cultural awareness training can enhance project outcomes and organisational success. We also propose a practical framework to mitigate KH by promoting trust, inclusivity and effective KS practices.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the understanding of knowledge management in multicultural project teams by integrating SIT and ANT, offering a comprehensive perspective on the factors driving KH in ICPs. The findings pave the way for future investigations into power dynamics and organisational contexts within ICPs.

Purpose
This study aims to analyze the evolution and current state of talent management in learning organizations and the design of managerial curricula, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in the context of a rapidly changing global business environment.
Design/methodology/approach
A narrative literature review was conducted, tracing the conceptual evolution of learning organizations. Seminal works emphasizing continuous learning and transformation were highlighted, and the progression of managerial education was analyzed, from its early focus on ethics and soft skills to its current emphasis on sustainability, digital literacy and experiential learning.
Findings
The research reveals challenges in balancing foundational knowledge with emerging competencies in curriculum design. Tensions are evident in maintaining relevance in rapidly changing, globally interconnected environments. Notable limitations include the trade-offs in innovation and the need to cater to diverse student demographics.
Originality/value
This review uniquely synthesizes developments at the intersection of curriculum innovation, organizational learning and curriculum design, offering valuable insights for institutions aiming to nurture talent for modern learning organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether public governance quality (i.e. control of corruption and voice and accountability) and corporate governance strength (i.e. environmental committee existence) are influential in stimulating supply chain transparency and how these two governance characteristics interact in enhancing supply chain transparency.
Design/methodology/approach
Our investigation draws on a sample of 25,096 firm-year observations affiliated with the manufacturing industry in 50 countries and executes country-year fixed effects.
Findings
We find that the strength of control of corruption, voice and accountability is positively associated with supply chain transparency, supporting institutional theory. Furthermore, the environmental committee’s existence is positively related to sustainable supply chain transparency, confirming the upper echelons theory. The moderating analysis rejects the complementary effect but supports the substitution effect, confirming the negative moderating role of the environmental committee between the control of corruption and voice and accountability and sustainable supply chain transparency.
Originality/value
No empirical study has drawn on an international sample to (1) explicate the worldwide adoption of sustainable supply chain transparency, (2) link corruption and accountability to green supply chain transparency or (3) investigate how sustainable supply chain transparency is affected by the interplay of institutions and environmental management committees. Thus, we highlight the substitutive or complementary role of internal and external governance mechanisms in inciting firms toward greener supply chain management by developing a novel sustainable supply chain transparency index that draws on five indicators.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to conduct a bibliometric assessment of existing literature in the fields of health communication and social media in the Asian context.
Design/methodology/approach
Using 265 Scopus-indexed papers, a comprehensive bibliometric study was performed, incorporating both performance and science mapping analyses.
Findings
The results reveal an increasing trend in the publication of this topic. This study also identified the top author, country, articles and author collaboration clusters. Four primary themes emerged from the publications: “Papillomavirus” and “the COVID-19 pandemic” were categorized as niche themes; “gender and cohort” was identified as a basic theme; and “behavioral intention” was classified as an emerging or declining theme. These can serve as the foundations for future research directions.
Research limitations/implications
This research used only the Scopus database as its data source. However, future bibliometric research could investigate other databases.
Practical implications
This paper has practical implications for researchers, health communication managers, government and policymakers. It provides valuable information that can guide researchers in conducting new studies, fostering collaborations and conducting further bibliometric analyses. Health communication managers can use this paper to design and manage social media-based health communication programs. The government could leverage these findings to support evidence-based policy implementation in the field of health communication.
Originality/value
This study, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, marks the first bibliometric analysis focused on the literature in the field of health communication and social media in the Asian context.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to focus on the assessment of a domestic property's energy performance status by a domestic energy assessor (DEA), to ascertain the possible underlying reasons for variability in the results of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). By variability, the authors mean discrepancies in assessment between different DEAs on similar properties. This is important because the uses for the EPC have been extended beyond their original function as an asset rating system, to include themes encompassing building policy decisions, building performance and the distribution of incentives and grants. Consequently, inaccuracies in EPC reporting will have a greater impact than may have been the case at the outset.
Design/methodology/approach
A case study approach involving the conducting of semi-structured interviews with 20 practicing DEAs was carried out, with transcribed recordings of the interview material subjected to thematic analysis. This formed part of a wider mixed methods study.
Findings
The results identify a wide range of underlying reasons for variability driven by issues in both practice and process, including conflicts of interests, the EPC auditing process, the default inputting of missing data by RdSAP where information may not be available/discoverable by the DEA, the quality and perception of EPCs and DEA training and experience.
Research limitations/implications
The sample size of 20 is by definition limiting, and it is possible that different results would have been obtained from a different sample. Although thematic saturation from the analysis of the responses on the key question of whether EPCs are considered variable does mitigate this. The respondents were all in possession of five years or more experience and of carrying out EPCs for different purposes. Less experienced DEAs may inevitably have responded to questions differently. The thematic analysis gives the researcher control over the presentation of the results, and it is noted that this creates a potential for bias. The researcher is immersed in the world of construction and property, with regular contact with DEAs and EPCs, which may influence the perspective of the results.
Practical implications
The research identifies risks to the accuracy of EPCs. To this end, and with the specific research findings in mind, this research may be of interest to construction professionals with respect to EPC practice and procurement, to the Accrediting Bodies who audit EPCs, to the creators of RdSAP with respect to automated EPC inputs, to academics either at face value or for use in further research and to policy makers who may wish to consider RdSAP data in future with qualifiers or margins of error, or may even look to review the EPC as the instrument of choice for some applications.
Originality/value
There is much literature analysing the shortcomings and nuances of RdSAP results, and the software model that generates the EPC, but only very limited literature extending the discussion about RdSAP to its operator: the DEA. At the time of writing, there is no literature focusing directly on the DEA and its role within the EPC production process. Their role is more important now, given the expanding use of EPCs, and increased reliance on EPC data.

Abstract
Purpose
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of state capital participation (SCP) on the corporate environmental engagement (CEE) of privately controlled listed firms in China.
Design/methodology/approach
We use a sample of 20,133 firm-year observations from 2009 to 2021. We use three different measures to proxy corporate environmental engagement and two different measures to proxy for state capital participation. We employ a difference-in-difference regression model to estimate the effect of state capital participation on corporate environmental engagement.
Findings
Using a sample of 20,133 firm-year observations from 2009 to 2021, we find that SCP significantly increases corporate expenditure on environmental protection, corporate environmental performance and ESG ratings. Specifically, SCP increases environmental investment capacity and attracts more media coverage, online attention and analysts’ following, which leads to better environmental engagement. Further analyses show that after state shareholders exit privately controlled firms, CEE deteriorates, while private capital injection in state-owned firms has no significant impact on CEE. The positive effect of SCP is stronger in privately controlled firms with local government ownership, a larger number of state shareholders, longer state shareholder holding periods, those without politically connected managers and firms operating in heavy pollution industries. Lastly, we show that minority government ownership reduces firm-level toxic emissions and enhances financial performance.
Research limitations/implications
We enrich the literature on the role of minority state ownership in corporate financial and environmental performance.
Originality/value
We enrich the literature on the role of minority state ownership in corporate financial and environmental performance. In light of the escalating environmental concerns and the growing emphasis on corporate environmental responsibility, this study highlights the beneficial role of minority government ownership in driving environmental performance. By providing resources and attracting external scrutiny, the government, as a minority shareholder, can significantly enhance the environmental engagement of privately controlled firms.
