Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to describe key elements that are critical to virtual qualitative research especially while working with practitioners as participants.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper takes a reflexive researcher approach using a case study to explore how researchers adopted a qualitative research approach using digital technology. We use five principles suggested by Boland et al. (2022) as a framework to consider and reflect on our experiences as researchers and those of our participants.
Findings
We highlight the gatekeeper’s support, trusted relationship with the organisations, interpersonal skills of interviewers, stringent measures of securing data and shared experiences of interviewee and interviewers helped complete virtual research. We recommend that four key factors such as digital competency, feasibility, flexibility and resilience should be considered while undertaking or commissioning virtual, qualitative research studies.
Originality/value
Social care practitioners and qualitative researchers increasingly negotiate with digital technologies to undertake their work. In this paper, we evidence how online qualitative approaches can be effective provided challenges are dealt with diligently in each stage of the research process.

Abstract
Purpose
Our goals were to explore the pedagogies applied by instructors that supported Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) student learning in a leadership course and the leadership behaviors BIPOC students identified as being applicable after the course.
Design/methodology/approach
Through survey research and qualitative data analysis, three prominent themes emerged.
Findings
High-quality, purposeful pedagogy created opportunities for students to learn. Second, a supportive, interactive community engaged students with the instructor, each other and the course material to support participation in learning. As a result, students reported experiencing big shifts, new growth and increased confidence during their leadership courses.
Originality/value
We discuss our findings and offer specific recommendations for leadership educators to better support BIPOC students in their leadership courses and classrooms and for further research with BIPOC students.

Abstract
Purpose
This study synthesises the self-determination theory (SDT), expectation-confirmation model (ECM), and protection motivation theory (PMT) to formulate an integrated theoretical framework that elucidates the process of shaping the intention to continue using facial recognition payment (FRP) under the conditional impact of perceived technology security.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from 667 Beijing Winter Olympics visitors with FRP experience were collected through an online survey and analysed using variance based-structural equation modelling (VB-SEM).
Findings
This study reveals that the intention to continue using FRP evolves through three key stages. Initially, in the expectation stage, the multidimensional concept of artificial autonomy (sensing, thought, and action), which is underpinned by self-determination, is pivotal, strongly influencing perceptions of service enhancement and fostering trust in FRP. Subsequently, the confirmation stage underscores the importance of perceived service enhancement and trust as vital drivers in maintaining FRP usage, while also contributing to subjective well-being. Crucially, perceived technology security emerges as a key moderating factor, enhancing positive perceptions and intentions towards FRP, thus influencing its sustained adoption.
Originality/value
This study stands out by revealing the nuanced interplay between artificial autonomy and user perceptions, particularly concerning service enhancement, technology security, and trust, as they influence well-being and the continued adoption of FRP. Robustly grounded in the integrated theoretical framework of SDT, ECM, and PMT, the study’s findings are critical for comprehending the core elements and specific drivers that promote sustained FRP use, especially as we consider its potential widespread implementation. Therefore, this study not only advances theoretical understanding but also offers practical guidance for optimising FRP deployment strategies in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Purpose
Police knowledge of and familiarity with human trafficking determine whether a victim is referred to services or arrested as an offender, along with other implications. Both field experience and training may affect how police officers recognize and respond to human trafficking scenarios. However, recent research suggests the relationship between officer experience and their ability to identify human trafficking is more nuanced. The purpose of this study is to explore whether experience, training or both are preferable to correctly identifying cases of human trafficking.
Design/methodology/approach
To do so, 495 police officers from a large Pennsylvania agency were surveyed about their perceptions of human trafficking. Officer demographics and levels of experience and training were compared to their responses to six human trafficking scenario questions.
Findings
Bivariate and logistic regression analyses conclude that training, but not experience working human trafficking cases, is associated with an increase in the likelihood of officers correctly identifying scenarios of human trafficking. These findings are discussed in light of the literature.
Originality/value
This study extends previous research by comparing the influence of training and experience investigating cases of human trafficking.

Purpose
This study aims to assess the enduring lack of citizenship for rural migrants coming to cities to work, and the extent to which there has been any progress in altering their status in past decades.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a narrative approach, relying on documentary sources. It takes a chronological approach in evaluating signs of progress but mainly tells a story of long-term continuity in the treatment of outsiders – even though they are from their own country – by urban officials and citizens.
Findings
The main finding is that the management of rural migrants in China’s cities has not fundamentally improved in the 40-plus years since they were released from the communes and permitted to come to cities to work. This is despite various pronouncements of change, most of which mattered little, if at all, in the implementation.
Originality/value
This study applies the concept of “citizenship” to what has been done and, mostly not done, for migrants over the past decades.

Purpose
In recent decades, interest in digital transformation (DX) within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has significantly increased. Despite the existence of several literature reviews on DX research, there remains a notable lack of systematic quantitative and visual investigations into the structure and evolution of this field. This study aims to address this gap by uncovering the current state, key topics, keywords, and emerging areas in DX research specific to the AEC sector.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing a holistic review approach, this study undertook a thorough and systematic analysis of the literature concerning DX in the AEC industry. Utilizing a bibliometric analysis, 3,656 papers were retrieved from the Web of Science spanning the years 1990–2023. A scientometric analysis was then applied to these publications to discern patterns in publication years, geographical distribution, journals, authors, citations, and keywords.
Findings
The findings identify China, the USA, and England as the leading contributors in the field of DX in AEC sector. Prominent keywords include “building information modeling”, “design”, “system”, “framework”, “adoption”, “model”, “safety”, “internet of things”, and “innovation”. Emerging areas of interest are “deep learning”, “embodied energy”, and “machine learning”. A cluster analysis of keywords reveals key research themes such as “deep learning”, “smart buildings”, “virtual reality”, “augmented reality”, “smart contracts”, “sustainable development”, “building information modeling”, “big data”, and “3D printing”.
Originality/value
This study is among the earliest to provide a comprehensive scientometric mapping of the DX field. The findings presented here have significant implications for both industry practitioners and the scientific community, offering a thorough overview of the current state, prominent keywords, topics, and emerging areas within DX in the AEC industry. Additionally, this research serves as an invaluable reference and guideline for scholars interested in this subject.

Purpose
For decades, quality management systems (QMS) have played an important role in the performance of organizations. Yet, with the unprecedented uncertainty surrounding the business environment, organizational resilience has become vital for business continuity. As organizations need to ensure both high performance and resilience, this paper aims at investigating how ISO 9001 implementation impacts organizational resilience.
Design/methodology/approach
The research deploys a qualitative methodology, with an outsider–insider approach. 32 semi-structured interviews were conducted, plus one final reflective interview. Interview questions dealt with resilience constructs: problem identification and prioritization, resource mobilization, organizational learning, sensemaking, self-organization, creativity and innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, mindfulness and coupling. The questions also dealt with how ISO 9001 implementation impacted each construct of organizational resilience.
Findings
The results show that ISO 9001 implementation enhanced resilience, mainly by promoting process-orientation and ensuring consistent practice of risk management across the organization. The results also suggest that at a certain point, when units became very highly process-oriented, ISO impact faded or disappeared as units had already been beyond that level before ISO implementation. This indicates a significant role played by the organizational structure when it comes to both ISO 9001 implementation and organizational structure.
Originality/value
This study is unique as it is the first – within the reviewed literature – to examine how a QMS, in particular ISO 9001, impacts firm’s ability to overcome adverse conditions. It also highlights the fundamental role the organizational structure plays to both effectively implement ISO 9001 and enhance organizational resilience.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the present study is to explore multimodal, i.e. verbal and nonverbal, gendered communication patterns of female physicians in senior management positions (governmental and health authorities) during a crisis.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a mixed multi-variable design, repeated ANOVA tests, and planned contrasts, the authors analyzed television appearances of 20 female physicians in senior management positions during the COVID-19 crisis (March/2020-April/2021).
Findings
The findings revealed patterns of mixed-gendered communication structures. Verbally, female physicians primarily displayed a masculine/agentic communication style of assertiveness, control, confidence and rationality. Nonverbally, however, they expressed a feminine/communal communication style of emotional attention, interpersonal sensitivity, responsiveness, kindness and empathy. Moreover, the analysis delineated integrated multimodal constructive vs. inhibitive communication strategies for crisis communication of female physicians in senior management positions.
Research limitations/implications
In the current research the authors did not compare females to males in health management positions, which is their follow-up project, but the authors did examine studies of males and females in management positions in the political sphere, which supported their findings. Therefore, the authors were able to demonstrate theoretical implications of multimodal gendered communication frameworks of feminine leadership.
Practical implications
Delineating verbal and nonverbal gendered communicative structures of effective management in health sectors can help female physicians assume positions of leadership, serve as guide models for other female physicians and contribute to improving effective communication skills during a crisis.
Social implications
This study contributes to the attempts of promoting gender equity in medicine and management by presenting effective communication strategies in medical crises that can help to promote female physicians’ messages development, social influence, leadership and management success in the future.
Originality/value
This article presents constructive, multimodal gendered communication frameworks of female physicians in senior management positions used in television appearances during the global COVID-19 crisis. Most previous studies in this area have examined either verbal or nonverbal communication mode. The value of this multimodal examination provides insights that may enhance constructive communication of female physicians in senior management positions during a crisis.

Purpose
The challenges seafarers face are unique due to the nature of their work. Individuals in this profession face unique stressors such as limited interaction with people, isolation from society, confined workspaces, unpredictable weather conditions and exposure to hazardous situations. Quantitative methods used in studies on seafarers’ well-being fail to capture the individual experiences, emotions and motivations that make up their rich tapestry. The prevailing reliance on close-ended questionnaires is a hindrance to seafarers’ expression of subjective experiences and difficulties. It is essential to prioritize their well-being, both from a humanitarian standpoint and an economic perspective.
Design/methodology/approach
For this study, the authors coted qualitative data using open-ended semi-structured questionnaires from 35 (35) merchant navy sailors. The drive of the study was clearly stated to the respondents by the researchers. The study focuses on the emotional detachment of seafarers and follows a two-phase sampling process: criterion sampling and snowball sampling. The sampling methods are chosen in accordance with the purpose of the study.
Findings
The in-depth qualitative inquiry and detailed analysis of interview excerpts generated three broad themes that explain the occurrence of emotional detachment among seafarers. The qualitative study advances the knowledge base of the intricate phenomena of mariner’s emotional detachment. The themes illuminate the causes and outcomes of emotional detachment, also necessitating the need for intervention.
Originality/value
This study highlights the issue of seafarers at work, which tends to affect their personal and professional lives. The lived experiences of seafarers help us understand the issue of emotional detachment from a better and more in-depth perspective. This certainly helps companies and policymakers customize their interventions to seafarers’ needs.
