Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to represent the initial impact analysis of a human resource development (HRD) intervention – the Center for Human and Organizational Potential (cHOP) – for faculty and staff at an academic medical center in the Midwestern US. cHOP seeks to unleash faculty and staff potential and advance organizational outcomes by fulfilling employees’ basic psychological needs, posited by self-determination theory (SDT, Ryan and Deci, 2000): competence, autonomy and relatedness.
Design/methodology/approach
Using Cianciolo and Regehr’s (2019) layered analysis framework as a guide, the authors conducted a program evaluation to analyze, in-depth, the nature and impact of two representative cHOP programs: Accelerate and BOOST. Specifically, the authors examined whether the implementation of these programs was consistent with SDT, as reflected in participants’ reported program experiences (i.e. “Did the intervention, in fact, occur as intended?”). The authors also examined program outcomes and opportunities for improvement based on program participants’ voices (i.e. did the intervention, implemented as intended, work?). Because SDT is a theory of individual motivation, the authors identified a need to evaluate outcomes at the individual level and beyond, broadly exploring what would happened if program participants’ basic psychological needs had been addressed. The aim was to determine the potential downstream consequences of intrinsically motivated faculty and staff, while promoting divergent thinking on program impact and sustainability.
Findings
Participants reported experiences suggest that Accelerate and BOOST addressed all three psychological needs and strengthened their intrinsic motivation to advance their leadership and career development and improve the performance of their teams and departments. These outcomes suggest the potential for impact at the individual level and beyond, such as the institution and external, professional societies.
Research limitations/implications
The study assessed two representative programs among cHOP’s many offerings. A comprehensive study of cHOP’s impact, directly linking psychological need fulfillment and organizational impact, is beyond the scope of a single study and requires further research.
Social implications
The authors suggest expanding scholarly discussions in the HRD and health professions education (HPE) literature to characterize the promise of HRD-HPE partnerships and to account for their impact more fully.
Originality/value
The study contributes to both HRD and HPE scholarship by providing a layered account of academic medical center (AMC) faculty and staff development using an HRD approach; and examining the impact of a theory- and evidence-based novel HRD intervention (i.e. cHOP) at the individual level and beyond in an AMC context.

Abstract
Purpose
College student wellbeing and mental health can be negatively impacted due to roles intrinsic to being and becoming a student in higher education. Active engagement in natural environments has been shown to have benefits for wellbeing. The purpose of this paper is to examine collegiate students’ utilization of a therapeutic garden on a college campus and the impact on their quality of life.
Design/methodology/approach
A case series mixed-methods design was used to track self-reported measures of quality of life. Participants were instructed to spend at least 1 h per week over four weeks in the therapeutic sensory garden on campus. Student participants were assessed using the EUROHIS-QOL-8, Positive and Negative Affect Scale and a semi-structured interview.
Findings
Pre-post quantitative measures of quality of life show significant improvement in quality of life of 12 graduate and undergraduate students. These results are triangulated with reduction in negative affect immediately following garden visits, and rich qualitative illustrations of the value of nature engagement on self-care and occupational balance. Small sample size and convenience sampling limits the generalizability of results.
Originality/value
Institutions of higher education recognize the value of green space on campus; however, they may lack the intentionality of designing a nature-based space to support student wellbeing. An intentionally designed campus-based therapeutic sensory garden may provide a novel opportunity to support overall student mental health and wellness.

Purpose
Global building failures, such as the Grenfell Tower fire in London, UK, emphasised the need for trustworthy building handover information for safety. However, a notable gap remains in understanding how reliable handover information can ensure the safety of occupants. This study aims to investigate the use and essential quality of handover information to understand the effects of the quality of information on the management of commercial buildings.
Design/methodology/approach
Ninety-four participants from nine organisations who regularly use handover information to manage multiple commercial buildings participated in the semi-structured interviews. Qualitative thematic coding using interview transcripts was performed to identify the utilisation of handover information and its quality requirements.
Findings
This study reveals that as-built drawings and product information are predominately used to fulfil statutory obligations, comply with the organisation’s internal policies, evaluate asset valuation and make informed decisions about capital investment and operating expenses. The quality dimensions of “accuracy”, “timeliness”, and “completeness” are preferred in combination to achieve desired outcomes.
Research limitations/implications
This study focused on using handover information in the management of commercial buildings. However, its results can offer valuable perspectives for improving its application across various sectors in the built environment.
Practical implications
The findings affirm the need for quality handover information for safety, compliance and efficient management in commercial buildings.
Originality/value
This research significantly contributes to the current knowledge of handover information in the building sector. Given the study findings, building owners are equipped to define specific handover information requirements and quality requisites.

Purpose
The purpose of this research is to examine the role of anticipation as a source of well-being in extended service contexts involving constraints on one’s agency (e.g. aged care). In these service contexts, consumers have limited ownership over their time usage and foci of anticipation, which affects their well-being.
Design/methodology/approach
Semi-structured interviews (n = 35) were conducted with members of the aged care ecosystem (residents, family and staff). Two separate aged care service models were investigated as they typically reflect different levels of agency/constraint: retirement villages and residential aged care facilities.
Findings
Results indicate that the subjective passage of time is influenced by one’s foci of anticipation. Having regular foci of anticipation both at a micro- and macro-level can generate well-being benefits for recipients. The importance of restabilization and building positive curves to counteract potential negative implications was identified.
Originality/value
This research is the first service study to investigate the concept of anticipation and subjective time perception as key components of one’s well-being in extended service encounters. We propose a novel conceptual model that combines micro- and macro-level foci into an iterative package to mitigate the after-effects of anticipation. We also demonstrate how Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) (good health for well-being) can be addressed through service research.

Purpose
This study examines how CEOs-elect navigate power dynamics with incumbent CEOs during leadership transitions, focusing on their strategic choices – cooperate, defect or disengage – based on perceptions of the incumbent’s behavior.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the game theory framework and insights from 22 interviews with executives from large Canadian organizations, we analyze CEOs-elect’s decision-making from nomination to ascension.
Findings
CEOs-elect cooperate when they anticipate the incumbent to cooperate and defect when they anticipate defection. When faced with uncertainty or signs of disengagement from the incumbent, CEOs-elect strategically choose to disengage, adopting a “No Play” strategy to preserve board trust and organizational stability.
Research limitations/implications
Findings are based on large Canadian organizations, which may limit applicability to smaller firms, family businesses or different cultural contexts. Future research should examine CEO transitions across diverse organizational and cultural settings.
Practical implications
Boards should recognize proactively manage power struggles during transitions, ensuring support for CEOs-elect and promoting cooperation with incumbents. Understanding perceived incumbent strategies can improve transition planning, minimize conflicts and improve organizational outcomes.
Originality/value
This research introduces “No Play” as a novel strategic option in CEO transitions, contributing to game theory and power dynamics literature. It also bridges gaps in understanding by linking strategic choices of CEOs-elect to perceptions of incumbent behavior and stakeholder trust.

Purpose
We explored whether (1) an informational intervention improves ratings of individuals on the autism spectrum (IotAS) in a job interview by curbing salience bias and whether expert-based influence amplifies this effect (Study 1); (2) the effect of disclosure of autism on ratings depends on a candidate’s presentation as IotAS or neurotypical (Studies 1 and 2) and (3) social desirability bias affects ratings of and emotional responses to disclosers (Study 2).
Design/methodology/approach
In two studies, participants, randomly assigned to experimental conditions, watched a mock job interview of a candidate presenting as an IotAS or neurotypical and reported their perception of his job suitability and selection decision. Study 2 additionally measured participants’ traits associated with social desirability bias, self-reported emotions and involuntary emotions gauged via face-reading software.
Findings
In Study 1, the informational intervention improved ratings of the IotAS-presenting candidate; delivery by an expert made no difference. Disclosure increased ratings of both the IotAS-presenting and neurotypical-presenting candidates, especially the former, and information mattered more in the absence of disclosure. In Study 2, disclosure improved ratings of the IotAS-presenting candidate only; no evidence of social desirability bias emerged.
Originality/value
We explain that an informational intervention works by attenuating salience bias, focusing raters on IotAS' qualifications rather than on their unexpected behavior. We also show that disclosure is less helpful for IotAS who behave more neuronormatively and social desirability bias affects neither ratings of nor emotional responses to IotAS-presenting job candidates.

Abstract
Purpose
This research investigates the capabilities of Cloud-based Building Information Modelling (CBIM) in managing quality asset information, drawing upon software engineers' perspectives. Compelling statistics highlight the relationship between building information and environmental sustainability. However, despite the growing utilisation of CBIM in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, a significant knowledge gap remains concerning its effectiveness in maintaining quality asset information.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employed an exploratory qualitative approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with thirteen software engineers actively developing technological solutions for the AEC industry. Following thematic analysis, the findings are categorised into four dimensions: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and technological limitations. Subsequently, these findings are analysed in relation to previously identified information quality problems.
Findings
This research reveals that while CBIM improves project coordination and information accessibility, its effectiveness is challenged by the need for manual updates, vulnerability to human errors and dependency on network services. Technological limitations, notably the absence of automated updates for as-built drawings and the risk of data loss during file conversions in the design phase, coupled with its reduced capability to validate context-specific information from the user's viewpoint, emphasise the urgent need for managerial strategies to maximise CBIM's capabilities in addressing information quality problems.
Originality/value
This study augments the understanding of CBIM, highlighting the managerial implications of a robust information management process to safeguard information integrity. This approach fosters sustainable practices anchored in reliable information essential for achieving desired outcomes. The findings also have broader managerial implications, especially for sectors that employ CBIM as an instrumental tool.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of digital technologies (DTs) in improving the mental health of workers on construction sites.
Design/methodology/approach
A mixed research approach was used in the study, which comprised a questionnaire survey and two phases of semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling was used to determine the interviewees and respondents of the questionnaire survey. Weighted mean rating (WMR) and manual content analysis were used to rank and evaluate the collected data.
Findings
The findings of this study revealed bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, work-related stress and depression as the six most significant mental disorders (MDs) among the construction workforce and 30 causes for them. Moreover, 27 symptoms were related to the six most significant MDs, and sweating was the most significant symptom among them. Despite that, 16 DTs were found to be suitable in mitigating the causes for the most significant MDs.
Originality/value
There are numerous studies conducted on the application of DTs to construction operations. However, insufficient studies have been conducted focusing on the application of DTs in improving the mental health of workers at construction sites. This study can thus influence the use of DTs for tackling the common causes for MDs by bringing a new paradigm to the construction industry.

Purpose
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to reshape mental health practices, policies and research in the coming decade. Simultaneously, mental health inequalities persist globally, imposing considerable costs on individuals, communities and economies. This study aims to investigate the impact of AI technologies on future citizenship for individuals with mental health challenges (MHCs).
Design/methodology/approach
This research used a community-based participatory approach, engaging peer researchers to explore the perspectives of adults with MHCs from a peer-led mental health organisation. This study evaluated potential threats and opportunities presented by AI technologies for future citizenship through a co-created film, depicting a news broadcast set in 2042. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and focus groups and were analysed using a reflexive thematic approach.
Findings
The analysis identified four key themes: Who holds the power? The divide, What it means to be human, and Having a voice. The findings indicate that adults with living experiences of MHCs are eager to influence the development of AI technologies that affect their lives. Participants emphasised the importance of activism and co-production while expressing concerns about further marginalisation.
Originality/value
This study provides new insights into the intersection of AI, technology and citizenship, highlighting the critical need for inclusive practices in technological advancement. By incorporating the perspectives of individuals with living experiences, this study advocates for participatory approaches in shaping AI technologies in mental health. This includes the co-creation of machine learning algorithms and fostering citizen engagement to ensure that advancements are equitable and empowering for people with MHCs.

Purpose
This study aims to investigate the mental health impacts of this disaster, focusing on the psychological resilience and vulnerability of displaced individuals. The study explores the mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that have emerged as a result of the sudden loss of homes, livelihoods and social networks.
Design/methodology/approach
The research employed a phenomenological approach, conducting 20 in-depth interviews with adult residents of Kiteezi who were displaced by the landslide. The interviews, conducted in English and transcribed for analysis, focused on three primary phenomena: landslides, displacement and mental well-being.
Findings
Findings reveal that the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill had profound mental health impacts on the displaced residents, with widespread reports of anxiety, depression and PTSD. The loss of homes and livelihoods, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding resettlement, exacerbated these mental health challenges.
Research limitations/implications
The study’s implications are significant for disaster response and mental health intervention strategies. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive mental health support for displaced individuals, emphasizing the importance of addressing both immediate psychological needs and long-term resilience-building.
Originality/value
This study is original in its focus on the specific context of the Kiteezi landfill collapse, contributing to the limited literature on the mental health impacts of environmental disasters in Uganda. It provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between environmental disasters, displacement and mental well-being, offering practical recommendations for improving disaster response and recovery efforts in similar settings.
