Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the factors influencing service employee work and personal well-being affecting their intention to leave the organization. This research explored the effects of service climate, resilience and workplace well-being (WWB) on service employee perceptions of subjective well-being and turnover intention. PERMA framework of individual flourishing and well-being (Seligman, 2011) was used to measure employee WWB and reflected their positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment.

Design/methodology/approach

Service employees (n = 250) completed an online self-administered survey. partial least squares structural equation (PLS-SEM) modeling and multi-group analysis (PLS-MGA) were utilized to test how gender differences influenced personal and organizational factors, and their impacts on PERMA dimensions and outcomes.

Findings

Results revealed a significant effect of service climate and resilience on PERMA. Only service employee work-meaning positively influenced SWB and negatively turnover intention. Examining each dimension of employee engagement showed similar impacts of service climate and resilience for both men and women, while absorption increased turnover intention for men.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to test the PERMA framework as service employee WWB. The study advances the employee well-being line of research by exploring the impacts of service climate and resilience on PERMA dimensions. The PERMA framework was extended to examine three sub-dimensions of employee engagement as unique PERMA dimensions. This study advances the limited knowledge of how work and personal factors affect service employees’ work and subjective well-being from a gender perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationship between proactive socialization behaviors (PSBs) and work engagement, with a specific focus on the mediating role of social capital resources (SCRs). Additionally, it investigates how proactive personality and perceived organizational support (POS) moderate the organizational assimilation of newcomers in Punjab, Pakistan, through the lens of self-determination theory.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with data collected from diverse organizations across cities in Punjab, Pakistan, including Bhimber, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Jhelum, Kharian, Kotla, Mandi Bahauddin, and Sialkot. A total of 1,000 questionnaires were distributed, resulting in 619 valid responses. The sample primarily consisted of individuals with varying levels of work experience, contributing to the diversity of the data. SEM was utilized to analyze the relationships between the studied variables.

Findings

Results indicated a significant positive association between PSBs and work engagement among newcomers. SCRs were found to mediate this relationship, suggesting that proactive behaviors help newcomers accumulate social capital, which enhances work engagement. Moreover, the study reveals that proactive personality and POS significantly moderate the relationship between PSBs and work engagement, with stronger positive associations observed among proactive individuals and those perceiving higher organizational support.

Practical implications

The study underscores the importance of encouraging proactive socialization behaviors and strengthening organizational support systems to foster newcomer engagement and facilitate successful assimilation.

Social implications

Understanding these dynamics can lead to the creation of more inclusive and supportive organizational environments, enhancing both individual well-being and organizational effectiveness.

Originality/value

This research offers new insights into the mechanisms through which PSBs impact work engagement, particularly through the accumulation of SCRs, and highlights the importance of proactive personality and organizational support as moderators.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the potential benefits of gamification in running apps, it is necessary to explore the impact of users’ gameful experience on their intention to continue using running apps. This study aims to empirically investigate this relationship along with the roles of brand attitude as a mediator and negative online reviews as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

The study surveyed 332 running app users in China. The reliability and validity of measures were confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The proposed hypotheses were verified by Process Macro.

Findings

The results show that (1) gameful experience positively impacts intention to continue using running apps, (2) brand attitude mediates the relationship between gameful experience and intention to continue using running apps and (3) negative online reviews moderate the relationship between gameful experience and brand attitude but not the relationship between brand attitude and intention to continue using running apps. Specifically, the effect of gameful experience on brand attitude decreases as users’ perception of negative online reviews increases.

Originality/value

These findings have both theoretical and practical implications for understanding the relationship among users’ gameful experience, brand attitude and intention to continue using running apps, as well as for developing effective gamification strategies to enhance user engagement and retention in running apps.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how social capital resources (SCRs), proactive personality and perceived organizational support (POS) influence work engagement during the organizational socialization process through the lens of self-determination theory (SDT).

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon a sample of newly hired employees from diverse industries, data was collected using self-report measures. A total of 619 respondents’ data were qualified for analysis. Regression analysis and structural equation modeling with the bootstrap method were used for hypothesis testing.

Findings

Results indicate that newcomers who used effective organizational socialization tactics (OSTs) experienced higher levels of work engagement. Moreover, SCRs were crucial in shaping the relationship between OSTs and work engagement. Specifically, newcomers with greater SCRs exhibited increased work engagement, enhancing effective OSTs’ positive impact. Furthermore, proactive personality and POS traits moderate the relationship between SCRs and work engagement. Newcomers with a proactive personality were more likely to leverage their SCRs, leading to higher work engagement effectively.

Practical implications

This study underscores the importance of promoting social connections, organizational support, proactivity and positive relationships to enhance employee work engagement and overall well-being in the Pakistani context.

Originality/value

This study examines how SCRs, proactive personality and POS influence work engagement during organizational socialization, a novel area in newcomer adjustment. It highlights the importance of strategic socialization and targeted onboarding programs that enhance SCRs and proactive personalities. By integrating SDT with the cultural context of Pakistani organizations, it offers unique insights for improving newcomer adjustment and engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the integration of middle mile drones (MMD) into logistics operations, addressing two key questions: (1) What are the drivers, financial implications and upcoming innovations associated with integrating drones into MM logistics? and (2) What challenges need to be overcome for successful implementation of drones in MM logistics?

Design/methodology/approach

The study combines expertise from an industry professional with over ten years of experience in drone operations and logistics applications, along with insights gained from discussions with 33 industry executives.

Findings

The research identifies several unique advantages of integrating drones into MM logistics, including their potential to improve operational efficiency in challenging environments. However, significant challenges related to scalability, evolving airframe designs and operational constraints remain. Early-stage use cases demonstrate the viability of MMD technologies in lower-risk logistics environments, but broader implementation requires overcoming the identified challenges.

Research limitations/implications

As MMD logistics is a nascent field, the study is exploratory and based on early-stage use cases and expert discussions. The limited scope of practical implementations may restrict the generalizability of the findings. Future research should focus on larger-scale operations and empirical studies of MMD integration in diverse logistics contexts.

Practical implications

The findings offer valuable insights for practitioners related to the costs, benefits and challenges of integrating drones into logistics operations and for policymakers related to societal implications, workforce development, privacy and safety concerns, and environmental impact.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the evolving understanding of drone applications in MM logistics by presenting early use cases and identifying both challenges and opportunities for MMD technology and offers a foundation for future research and practice in this emerging domain.

Abstract

Purpose

Esports is emerging as a global sensation, yet its distinctive nature complicates our understanding of players' motivations. This study leverages self-hierarchy and self-determination theories to examine the motivations that define players at individual, relational, and community levels, seeking to identify which motivations are most valued.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method approach was employed, focusing on Honor of Kings esports players in China to explore the answers to the research questions. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted to uncover self-definitional motivations at various levels. Second, a quantitative study was conducted with 607 regular Honor of Kings players to empirically examine the effects of the identified motivations on satisfaction.

Findings

The qualitative and quantitative data results reveal that self-efficacy and self-worth at the individual level, recognition and emotional attachment from close others at the relational-self level, and cocreation and belongingness at the collective level positively influence game satisfaction. More importantly, self-definitional motivations at the relational level are valued the most. Additionally, identification with a game character moderates the effects of self-definitional motivation at the collective level and emotional attachment at the relational-self level.

Originality/value

This research delves into players' motivations for engaging with Honor of Kings, anchored in self-hierarchy and self-determination theories. It uncovers that motivations rooted in different aspects of self-identity have distinct associations with players’ satisfaction level. This suggests a vital strategy for game designers and operators to adopt: to enhance player satisfaction, they should specifically address and emphasize the aspects of self-identity that matter most to their audience.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of bank monitoring on conditional conservative accounting of Indian listed firms. Drawing on bank monitoring and relationship lending literature, the study hypothesizes that monitoring by a single bank reduces the bank’s demand for conservatism-facilitated control transfers.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical design is composed of three steps. In the first step, using data on Indian firms listed in NSE and BSE for the period 2000–2019, market-based firm-year measure and accrual cash flow-based firm-year measure of conditional conservatism is estimated. In the second step, we test the hypothesis using multivariate panel regression corrected for heteroskedasticity and incorporating firm and year-fixed effects. In the third step, we test for the robustness of the results using Heckman’s correction approach.

Findings

Results indicate that firms which are monitored by a single bank tend to be less conservative. Also, the negative association between single bank monitoring and conservatism is stronger when the firm’s debt structure is dominated by bank debt.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s scope does not include analyzing the influence of characteristics of the single banker monitoring the firm. Future research could investigate attributes like ownership of the banker as a possible source of variation in the relationship documented in this study.

Practical implications

Accounting standard-setting boards are now discouraging implementation of conservatism to avoid bias in financial reporting. This paper finds that a strong bank–firm relationship can be a possible substitute for conservatism.

Originality/value

The study sheds new light on the debt structure–conservatism relationship. Bank’s availability of inside information through the transaction account and its impact on lending relationships is established in the literature. However, the literature on the determinants of conservatism has not examined how the benefit enjoyed by the firm’s single banker, possessing all the information in the transaction account can lead to bank’s reduced dependence on financial statements and subsequently reduced accounting conservatism of borrowing firms.

Abstract

Purpose

Gamification has been constantly demonstrated as an effective mechanism for employee engagement. However, little is known about how gamification reduces cyberloafing and the mechanism by which it affects cyberloafing in the workplace. This study draws inspiration from self-determination and social bonding theories to explain how game dynamics, namely, personalised challenges, social interactivity and progression status, enhance tacit knowledge sharing behaviour, which, in turn, reduces cyberloafing. In addition, the study also examines the negative moderating effect of fear of failure on the positive relationship between game dynamics and tacit knowledge sharing.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 250 employees from information technology organisations, the study employed a 3-wave study to examine the conditional indirect effects.

Findings

The results ascertain that tacit knowledge sharing plays a central role in the relationship between gamification and cyberloafing. Further, game dynamics positively influenced tacit knowledge sharing, which in turn reduced cyberloafing. Especially, social interactivity and progression status greatly reduced cyberloafing behaviour when the fear of failure was low.

Originality/value

This study is one of the initial studies that suggest gamification as a progressive tool to reduce workplace cyberloafing behaviours. It utilises a problematisation approach to analyse and criticise the in-house assumptions regarding cyberloafing prevention measures. Further, the study proposes a conceptual model explaining the link between gamification and cyberloafing through alternate assumptions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined the effect of emotional intelligence on graduate students' academic engagement in Ogun State, Nigeria. This study also explored the moderating role of digital learning support in the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive design was used, with purposive and convenient sampling methods were adopted to select the respondents. A total of 341 graduate students were drawn from different schools of postgraduate studies at selected universities in Nigeria. SmartPLS (3.0) was used to explore the relationships between the variables.

Findings

The results revealed that emotional intelligence dimensions significantly influence graduate students' academic engagement. In addition, digital learning support positively moderated the relationship between emotional intelligence and students' academic engagement. Further, to the empirical evidence from the findings, the study concludes that digital learning support moderates the relationship between emotional intelligence and students' academic engagement.

Research limitations/implications

It is impossible to extrapolate the findings from the research to other industries in Nigeria. Practical Implication: It is recommended that the leadership of graduate schools pay attention to a digital learning support system that enhances emotional intelligence and will stimulate productive research activities, practical engagement and academic excellence.

Originality/value

This study contributes significantly by filling a research lacuna in strategic human resource management (HRM), personnel psychology and organisational behaviour literature within the context of private universities in Nigeria. This study advances the literature by demonstrating how digital learning support moderates the relationship between emotional intelligence and graduate students' academic engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the gaps concerning the organizational operant resources (OORs) of logistics service providers (LSPs) expected in outsourcing relationships. The study considers the views of both manufacturing firms (M-firms) and LSPs in India and DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) seeking gaps within and across regions.

Design/methodology/approach

This research employed a survey targeting executives from large M-firms and LSPs in both India and DACH. The perceptions about the importance and improvement expectations of 17 OORs are analyzed. A modified version of importance-improvement analysis (A-B), a novel comparative A-B analysis (CABA) method, has been proposed to identify the importance and improvement gaps in OORs between M-firms and LSPs within and across India and the DACH region.

Findings

There are more gaps between M-firms and LSPs in India compared to DACH. Cross-country comparisons reveal that LSPs in India and DACH have similar perceptions concerning the OORs, but M-firms in India have significantly higher improvement expectations than those in DACH.

Research limitations/implications

This study proposes an analytical approach that enables managers to identify improvement areas and better align with their outsourcing relationship partners. It also highlights aspects that need to be considered while entering emerging markets such as India.

Originality/value

The analysis approach using CABA is novel. Also, among the cross-country studies, this is the first to compare outsourcing relationships in India with the DACH region while involving both users' and service providers' perspectives.
