Abstract

Purpose

Notwithstanding their potential benefits especially for individuals with low health literacy, users are still somewhat skeptical about the reliability of healthcare chatbots. The present study aims to address this challenge by investigating strategies to enhance users’ cognitive and emotional trust in healthcare chatbots. Particularly, this study aims to understand the effects of chatbot design cues in increasing trust and future chatbot use intention for low health literacy users.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted two experimental studies with a final sample of 327 (Study 1) and 241 (Study 2). Three different chatbots were developed (Chatbot design: Bot vs Male-doctor vs Female-doctor). Participants were asked to have a medical consultation with the chatbot. Participants self-reported their health literacy scores. The PROCESS model 7 was used to analyze the hypotheses.

Findings

The results showed that the female-doctor cues elicited greater cognitive and emotional trust, whereas the male-doctor cues only led to greater cognitive trust (vs bot-like cues). Importantly, this study found that users’ health literacy is a significant moderating factor in shaping cognitive and emotional trust. The results indicated that both the female and male-doctor cues’ positive effects on cognitive trust were significant for those with lower levels of health literacy. Furthermore, the positive effect of the female-doctor cues on emotional trust was also significant only for those whose health literacy level was low. The increased cognitive and emotional trust led to greater future intention to use the chatbot, confirming significant moderated mediation effects.

Originality/value

Despite the strong economic and educational benefits of healthcare chatbots for low health literacy users, studies examining how healthcare chatbot design cues affect low health literate users surprisingly remained scarce. The results of this study suggest that healthcare chatbots can be a promising technological intervention to narrow the health literacy gap when aligned with appropriate design cues.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the mediating effect of career resilience (CR) on Generation Z’s emotional intelligence (EI) and perceived career outcomes such as career satisfaction (CSAT), burnout and intention to leave a career. In its short organizational tenure, Gen Z has faced the adverse effects of global events affecting their views of career and, ultimately, CR.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey method was used to test the hypothesized relationship. A total sample of 160 respondents were assessed. Hypotheses in this study were tested by using Hayes’s (2018) PROCESS tool based on OLS regression and with a bootstrap method.

Findings

The most significant finding of this study concludes that although small, CR has a positive mediating indirect effect on Gen Z’s CSAT and burnout. However, contrary to past findings, we found a negative relationship between Gen Z’s EI and CR. Furthermore, although EI and CSAT have a positive relationship, CR and CSAT are negatively correlated. Meanwhile, Gen Z’s EI through CR positively affects Gen Z’s CSAT.

Research limitations/implications

The study has implications for how organizations can attract, retain and engage Gen Z.

Originality/value

Despite Gen Z being a part of the workforce for at least six years, limited empirical research on Gen Z has been published. Indeed, Gen Z’s workforce inexperience does not yield in-depth explanations of CR concepts; however, as we continue to learn more about Gen Z and their interactions with the work environment, the authors begin to get a peek into the future of the workforce.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to build on social comparison theory to develop a theoretical model of leader–member exchange (LMX) relationship to workplace ostracism through perceived organizational status by coworkers and envy. This study further proposes that warmth and competence may potentially moderate these two indirect effects.

Design/methodology/approach

This study tested the hypotheses in a battery manufacturing company located in South China by a survey of 216 employees organized in 55 work teams, using different sources. Additionally, the authors conduct two online vignette experiments to test this study’s mediation, proving the causality.

Findings

The authors found that high-level LMX leads to both envy and perceived organizational status by coworkers, which results in a mixed blessing on workplace ostracism toward the employee with high-level LMX. The focal employee’s warmth and competence moderate these indirect relationships.

Research limitations/implications

The authors use LMX to explore antecedents of workplace ostracism and explain how and when these focal employees suffer workplace ostracism from their coworkers. The authors extend the research on LMX by examining the interpersonal risk of being a focal employee. The authors discover two critical boundary conditions – warmth and competence.

Practical implications

This study suggests that it is important to balance the level of the differential LMX; appropriately endorsing other members is a good way to avoid eliciting envy and opposition. Meanwhile, person-oriented citizenship behaviors such as demonstrations of concern or help may shortly build up an employee’s warm impression on their coworkers.

Originality/value

By discovering the bright and dark sides of LMX, this paper has the potential to advance theories on LMX and workplace ostracism. Therefore, the authors believe the current research will have an important impact on relevant research in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The study of mindfulness is still shown to be of interest in different aspects of organisations and/or businesses. Therefore, this study aims to present an integrative, multi-level model of mindfulness based on a holistic approach that can contribute to better governance practices and lead to competitive advantages.

Design/methodology/approach

To fulfil this aim, an extensive integrative review of the literature, from the main articles about this topic, was made.

Findings

This study shows that the concept of mindfulness, a conscious presence or full attention and its relation with organisations or firms’ personal, behavioural and social characteristics, in the current context of great adversity, uncertainty and unpredictability, is of interest at the individual, organisational and social level.

Practical implications

This conceptual study has important implications for both practice and theory. It demonstrates that mindfulness significantly impacts the manager/business person’s ecosystem at the individual, organisational and social levels, particularly in relation to Sustainable Development Goals.

Originality/value

This study introduces a comprehensive theoretical model that explains this relationship and organises information from a multi-level perspective. This approach can contribute to the advancement of theory by clarifying and discussing the role of mindfulness at the individual, organisational and societal levels. It also identifies opportunities and outlines future research directions, aiming to promote more sustainable development.

Abstract

Purpose

Establishing an effective educational system is directly tied to academic leadership, a multifaceted concept that differs from one environment to another. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of digital leadership (DL) aspects in the enhancement of technical knowledge sharing (KS) and dealing with emotional intelligence (EI) among the teaching faculty of higher education institutions (HEIs).

Design/methodology/approach

Following a quantitative and cross-sectional research design, convenient sampling is employed for data collection via a self-administered questionnaire from 320 faculty members of private HEIs in Pakistan.

Findings

Structural equation model (SEM) is used for path analysis. The results reveal a positive and significant effect of DL, aspects like visionary leadership (VL), digital citizenship (DC), systematic improvement (SI), on knowledge sharing (KS), and emotional intelligence (EI).

Practical implications

This study has highlighted the significance of DL in private HEIs. The findings of the study imply that institutional heads of higher education institutions (HEIs) can successfully manage the knowledge assets that they have and those of their staff members, ensure the successful adoption of technology and foster product and process innovation that improves organizational performance and integrates successful strategies into the educational system by demonstrating DL aspects. The research also analyzes institutional heads' present leadership strategies to enhance response to technological change and innovations, which are considered fundamental pillars of organizational success. Ultimately, this will extend the literature on adopting DL techniques towards digital transformation in the education system.

Originality/value

This study empirically confirms the role of DL aspects such as VL, DC, and SI towards KS and EI. Most of the research demonstrates the direct impact of DL on EI, whereas the aspects of DL are not directly related to KS and EI. Studies have also shown how DL enhances its role in incorporating leadership in organizations, industries, and education, mainly in Western countries. This research addresses the gap in understanding the direct effects of DL aspects on KS and EI in non-Western countries, particularly within the education sector.

Abstract

Purpose

Although virtual worlds, such as the Metaverse, can disrupt the hospitality sector, few empirical investigations have critically evaluated the scope and scale of this disruption from an industry perspective. This study aims to rectify this knowledge gap by exploring the opportunities and challenges of the Metaverse as seen by hospitality professionals.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a Delphi study conducted with UK-based senior hospitality industry practitioners experienced in designing and implementing digital innovations within their organisations.

Findings

The Metaverse is most likely to be adopted by hospitality organisations willing and able to take risks, such as large and/or chain-affiliated enterprises. The Metaverse will not replace traditional hospitality services but supplement and enhance them with new layers of service. The main applications are in the context of events and experiences. The Metaverse will also provide the “try before you buy” option, revealing the opportunities to design digital twins of physical businesses. Young and technology-savvy individuals are most likely to first adopt the Metaverse. The key challenges of the adoption are attributed to the technological unpreparedness of hospitality organisations; market immaturity; inflated customer expectations; a skills gap among hospitality employees; and regulatory issues. These challenges require the engagement of various stakeholders to create an operational and monitoring framework for hospitality organisations to embrace the Metaverse.

Practical implications

This study highlights how the Metaverse can disrupt the hospitality industry at the level of strategic planning and business operations.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first empirical investigations of the potential of the Metaverse from the viewpoint of hospitality industry practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The integrated reporting framework affords considerable discretion over the form and content of business model disclosures, but a diagrammatic representation is favoured. In practice, most firms choose to use an infographic. This study aims to determine whether an infographic is a more effective and efficient form of communication than narrative-only information. Additionally, the mediating role of psychophysiological arousal is examined.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an explorative experimental design, this study uses eye-tracking technology to examine how users interact with different presentation formats for business model disclosures and how this affects the effectiveness and efficiency of the disclosures. Using pupillometry, the impacts of presentation format on arousal are also examined, in addition to the mediating effect of arousal on recall and comprehension.

Findings

Infographic presentation led to a substantial decrease in reading time coupled with moderately lower recall relative to narrative-only presentation. However, no significant difference in comprehension was observed. Additionally, infographic presentation was associated with higher arousal, but arousal was not found to mediate the relationship between presentation format and communicative effectiveness.

Originality/value

The study assists reporters and standard-setters, such as the International Accounting Standards Board and International Sustainability Standards Board, by providing qualified support for the diagrammatic representations of business models as an efficient means of communicating complex financial and non-financial information and highlighting future research opportunities.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper analyzes socially embedded antecedents of sustainability and compares the results between two distinct contexts of Russia and Italy. Specifically, the paper identifies which forms of embeddedness (network, family and virtual) are associated with proactive environmental sustainability in SMEs.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for the study were gathered from the World Bank Enterprise Survey dataset and include observations of 1,106 Russian SMEs and 663 Italian SMEs. Given the dichotomous nature of the dependent variable “proactive environmental sustainability”, the study utilizes a binary logistic regression and test regression models on the Russian and Italian data.

Findings

Network embeddedness positively influences proactive environmental sustainability among SMEs in Italy, but not in Russia. Value chain environmental pressure positively impacts proactive environmental sustainability among SMEs in Russia and Italy. Network embeddedness negatively moderates the relationship between value chain environmental pressure and proactive sustainability in Russia, but not in Italy. Virtual embeddedness positively impacts proactive environmental sustainability practices among SMEs in Russia but not in Italy, while family embeddedness positively impacts proactive environmental sustainability practices in Italy, but not in Russia.

Originality/value

We employ social embeddedness theory to determine to what extent certain forms of embeddedness contribute to proactive environmental sustainability among SMEs originating from two very distinct national contexts, a developed economy and a transition (emerging) economy. Our comparative approach allows us to challenge the “traditional” assumptions about SMEs’ sustainability antecedents, by showing the key role of different forms of social embeddedness.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to analyze the primary social factors influencing the mental health and happiness of older adults. Specifically, the paper identifies the elements of social influences on the psychological well-being of elderly individuals.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing a quantitative research methodology, survey data were collected to examine the psychological well-being of older adults, utilizing SPSS software version 28.0 for data analysis.

Findings

Psychological well-being in the elderly is intricately linked to personal, cognitive, emotional and social aspects. Seniors experiencing reduced loneliness, ample communication opportunities, active social engagement and living with family members demonstrate higher levels of psychological well-being. Surprisingly, details of daily activities in senior age showed little impact on psychological well-being.

Research limitations/implications

The research results may lack generalizability due to the chosen approach, prompting a need for further testing of proposed propositions.

Originality/value

This study fulfills an identified need to explore how psychological well-being is established in an elderly society, shedding light on critical social determinants.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid growth of halal tourism over the past decade has made it a lucrative market, with destinations competing for Muslim travellers. This study examines the factors influencing tourists' intention to visit halal tourism destinations in Indonesia, using the push-pull-mooring (PPM) model to understand this phenomenon.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 328 usable responses were used to analyse the data. The proposed conceptual framework was tested using covariant-based structural equation modelling (CB-SEM).

Findings

Results indicate that push, pull and mooring motives positively influence visit intention towards halal tourism destinations. Among these motives, novelty seeking, escapism, halal-friendly destination performance, halal attributes of the destination, religiosity and subjective norms were the most critical factors that improved visit intention. Furthermore, the moderating role of mooring factors was also established.

Practical implications

The study makes several strategic suggestions for promoting halal tourism destinations. These include highlighting the destination’s halal index factor to attract Muslim tourists and develop the industry market.

Originality/value

Research in halal tourism is still emerging, and this study aims to enhance our understanding of Muslim travellers. Using the PPM framework, it provides valuable insights into Muslim tourists' intentions to visit halal destinations.
