Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate how stakeholders in the UK farm-to-retail lamb value chain fared in the wake of Britain’s formal exit from the European Union, along with the worldwide COVID-19 epidemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Eight interviews were conducted with members of three separate stakeholder groups within the UK lamb value chain (farmers, meat processors and retail buyers) to ascertain the benefits and challenges faced. Interviews were transcribed and thematically coded, revealing three key “themes”: economic consequences, supply chain impacts and policy changes.

Findings

Farmers were positively affected by an increase in the lamb sale price, but meat processors and retail buyers were more negatively affected by changes to the export process (increased paperwork, bureaucracy challenges and border control checks) and labour shortages. All three groups complained of a perceived lack of support from Government, and of a sense of uncertainty in relation to the new UK Agricultural Policy and future international trade deals.

Research limitations/implications

The study relates to a limited time-envelope (November 2021–March 2022), and interview sample (2–3 members of each group). Follow-up research will be required to ascertain whether these findings prevail across the UK lamb value chain, and to help inform Government with a view to protecting vulnerable stakeholders in the sector and securing British lamb for consumers.

Originality/value

The research provides novel insights into the UK lamb value chain at a time of market uncertainty.

Abstract

Purpose

Invented in late 1890s, asbestos cement sheeting rose to prominence during the post-Second World War period as a building material for low-cost housing by state housing commissions and low-income families (“fibro homes”). The adverse health effects of asbestos fibres in the building industry and home renovation activities are well documented. Fibro homes of the 1950s and 1960s are increasingly coming under the gaze of heritage studies, which brings to the fore the question of how to deal with the asbestos cement sheeting most are clad with.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides the first systematic review to assess the literature (126 papers were identified in Google Scholar and scanned for content) on the conservation management of asbestos cement sheeting in heritage properties.

Findings

Overall, engagement with the conservation management of asbestos cement sheeting in heritage properties was low, with only two sources dealing with asbestos cement sheeting in any level of detail. The studies note that if asbestos cement sheeting is in good condition, it should be left alone. Numerous conservation and repair options do exist, in particular the application of (coloured) sealants that extend the life of asbestos cement sheets and asbestos cement roofing.

Originality/value

This paper represents the first systematic review to assess conservation management options for asbestos cement sheeting in heritage properties.

Abstract

Purpose

The United Kingdom (UK) construction sector is transforming with increasing confidence in offsite construction (OSC) solutions following its accrued benefits. To sustain this momentum, exploring viable strategies to promote successful OSC implementation is a top priority. This paper aims to identify and establish interrelationships and logical dependencies of critical success factors (CSFs) for implementing OSC on building projects in the UK.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilised a qualitative research approach. Following a critical review of extant literature, brainstorming and focus group sessions were carried out with OSC experts in the UK construction industry to identify and contextualise CSFs for OSC implementation. Interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and matrix impact cross-reference multiplication applied to a classification (MICMAC) were used to analyse and model the interrelationships between the contextualised CSFs.

Findings

The study identified eighteen CSFs for implementing OSC on projects in the UK positioned on seven hierarchical levels and clustered into dependent, linkage and independent factors. The top five CSFs established were client commitment, top management support, adequate OSC knowledge and experience, flexible leadership and flexible business models. These were located at the base of the ISM model, possessing the highest driving powers in facilitating the successful implementation of OSC on projects.

Originality/value

This study established a hierarchical interrelationship and the importance of the CSFs influencing the successful implementation of OSC. This would assist OSC clients and project teams in identifying and prioritising particular areas for strategic actions, which offer advantages in pursuing successful OSC project outcomes in the UK. Previous research on OSC implementation in the UK had not examined CSFs' interrelationships.

Abstract

Purpose

The aboutness (a subject matter of resource) of information has been strongly emphasized when organizing and searching for different types of media resources. For video games, mood is one of the critical subjective elements that supports users in finding games of interest. The current study examines a previously developed video game mood controlled vocabulary (CV) to empirically test its applicability and evaluate the individual terms’ separability and distinctiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

The research team collected user reviews from Steam, an online game database. Three different games were selected for triangulation to represent each of the 17 moods identified in the existing CV, resulting in the selection of 51 games. Collected reviews were tokenized and investigated from individual, terminological and categorical levels of text analyses.

Findings

Through the application of multiple analysis techniques (frequency, cluster and network), findings confirm the intuitiveness and usefulness of the existing CV. Additionally, opportunities for increased category separability and distinctness are identified for three moods: Aggressive, Quirky and Intense.

Originality/value

The current study adopts a user-centered perspective to evaluate the existing metadata framework created based on literature analysis. This study aims to complement the literature-based framework with users’ perspectives to enhance the metadata for interactive multimedia resources, such as video games.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the evolution and current state of talent management in learning organizations and the design of managerial curricula, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in the context of a rapidly changing global business environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A narrative literature review was conducted, tracing the conceptual evolution of learning organizations. Seminal works emphasizing continuous learning and transformation were highlighted, and the progression of managerial education was analyzed, from its early focus on ethics and soft skills to its current emphasis on sustainability, digital literacy and experiential learning.

Findings

The research reveals challenges in balancing foundational knowledge with emerging competencies in curriculum design. Tensions are evident in maintaining relevance in rapidly changing, globally interconnected environments. Notable limitations include the trade-offs in innovation and the need to cater to diverse student demographics.

Originality/value

This review uniquely synthesizes developments at the intersection of curriculum innovation, organizational learning and curriculum design, offering valuable insights for institutions aiming to nurture talent for modern learning organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The Delphi study Educate Northwest Helvetia is part of a multi-stakeholder approach to define common challenges and priorities for public schooling in a federal setting. This paper aims to take stock of the outcome of expert ratings and group discussions.

Design

Based on a literature review of megatrends, 21st century skills and sustainable development goals, the study focused on four domains: digital change, economic change, sociocultural change and ecological change. Opinions of teachers, principals and other experts were collected in the first wave via an online survey (n = 707). In the second wave, findings of the survey were discussed in ten online workshops, and participants refined priorities for schooling 2030 via real-time online scoring. Quantitative data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

Analysis of quantitative data shows an emphasis on soft skills, self-organization, equity and transversal competencies. The enhancement of computational thinking and teaching on sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics are important minority concerns.

Practical implications

The study delivers a manageable set of 12 priorities addressed to cantonal ministries of education, teacher unions, associations of principals and other stakeholders.

Research limitations/implications

Since these priorities are rather abstract, qualitative in-depth research concerning uptake and impact is needed.

Originality/value

This study provides new perspectives for the dialogue on evidence-based policymaking in settings of consensus democracy. It also provides valuable pointers for school improvement and teacher education that can be further explored.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to examine how teachers’ motivational strategies influence Tanzanian primary school pupils’ motivation to learn English. It specifically identified and evaluated the impact of these strategies on pupils’ motivated behaviours during English language learning.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved 40 English language teachers from 20 selected primary schools in Morogoro, Tanzania. Data were collected through non-participant classroom observations and interviews. Quantitative analysis was performed using SPSS version 20 to produce descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative analysis was based on Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis framework.

Findings

The results indicate that teachers used various motivational strategies, with the most frequent strategies including breaking classroom monotony, increasing pupils’ expectancy of success, demonstrating enthusiasm, promoting learner autonomy, recognising and appreciating success, administering tasks in a motivating manner and providing regular experiences of success. Many of these strategies were aimed at sustaining pupils’ motivation. The study also found a strong correlation between teachers’ motivational strategies and pupils’ motivated behaviours, with positive multiple regressions indicating a significant impact.

Research limitations/implications

The study reports on the immediate impact of teachers’ motivational strategies on enhancing pupils’ motivation to learn English based on findings collected using a cross-sectional design.

Originality/value

The paper addresses the knowledge gap in using motivational strategies to engage young learners in classroom interactions. It answers Lamb’s (2017) call to analyse foreign language learners’ and teachers’ classroom experiences. The research reports on classroom observations in Tanzania, focusing on teachers’ use of motivational strategies and their results in motivating pupils to learn English.

Abstract

Purpose

The hotel customers are conscious of the deteriorating environmental conditions and demand for online immersions. Hotels lack an exciting shift in customer behavior for augmented customer re-patronage intention (CRPI) especially in developing countries. This study aims to apply customer-dominant service logic (CDSL) to comprehend customers’ life-sphere contributing to some of the vital United Nations sustainable development goals (UN SDGs). In this essence, CDSL grasps the impact of customer empowerment (CE) and environmental corporate social responsibility (Env CSR) on customer re-patronage intention (C-RPI) with the mediating and moderating effects in Pakistan’s four- and five-star hotels.

Design/methodology/approach

A deductive approach is followed in which an online survey of 400 hotel customers was conducted using purposive and snowball sampling techniques to understand the practice of C-RPI and UN SDGs.

Findings

This study reveals that executing the UN SDGs in the hotel industry eventually boosts CE and Env CSR, further enhancing online customer value cocreation (O-CVCC) resulting in C-RPI. Both CE and Env CSR gain a complimentary/partial mediation by O-CVCC on C-RPI is also reported. Moreover, sensation seeking moderates the relationship between CE and O-CVCC. Yet, customer commitment does not moderate the relationship between O-CVCC and C-RPI.

Originality/value

This study highlights that C-RPI (i.e. SDG 11) enhances when Env CSR is taken care of (i.e. SDG 13), customers are empowered (i.e. SDG 5 and SDG 17) and cocreated online (i.e. SDG 9). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first studies to empirically test the approaches in the hotel industry contributing to SDG 5, 9, 11, 13 and 17.

Objetivo

Los clientes de hoteles son conscientes de las condiciones ambientales deteriorantes y demandan inmersión en línea. Los hoteles carecen de un cambio emocionante en el comportamiento del cliente para la intención de repatronaje aumentada (CRPI) especialmente en países en desarrollo. Este estudio aplica la lógica de servicio dominante del cliente (CDSL) para comprender la esfera de vida de los clientes que contribuyen a algunos de los vitales Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de las Naciones Unidas (ODS de la ONU). En esencia, CDSL comprende el impacto del empoderamiento del cliente (CE) y la RSE ambiental (Env CSR) en C-RPI con efectos de mediación y moderación en hoteles de cuatro y cinco estrellas de Pakistán.

Metodología

Se utilizó un enfoque deductivo en el que se llevó a cabo una encuesta en línea a 400 clientes de hoteles utilizando técnicas de muestreo intencional y de bola de nieve para comprender la práctica de RPI y los ODS de la ONU.

Resultados

Este estudio revela que la ejecución de los ODS de la ONU en la industria hotelera finalmente impulsa CE y Env CSR, y mejora aún más O-CVCC resultando en C-RPI. También se informa que tanto CE como Env CSR obtienen una mediación complementaria/parcial por la co-creación de valor del cliente en línea (O-CVCC) en C-RPI. Además, la búsqueda de sensaciones (SS) modera entre CE y O-CVCC. Sin embargo, el compromiso del cliente (CC) no modera entre O-CVCC y C-RPI.

Originalidad

Este estudio destaca que C-RPI (es decir, ODS 11) mejora cuando se cuida Env CSR (es decir, ODS 13), los clientes están empoderados (es decir, ODS 5 y ODS 17) y co-creados en línea (es decir, ODS 9). Este estudio es uno de los primeros estudios en probar empíricamente los enfoques en la industria hotelera que contribuyen a los ODS 5, 9, 11, 13 y 17.

Abstract

Purpose

To present a review of the current state of lesson study (LS) in initial teacher education (ITE) in Europe.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic search, combined with heuristic and hermeneutic analysis, was conducted in both English and Spanish using indexed academic databases to collect research and experiences of LS in ITE across Europe. The core areas or analysis categories included sustainability, observation and tutoring, the connection between schools and universities, the value of pedagogical knowledge and LS models.

Findings

LS in ITE has seen significant growth in Europe since 2015, particularly in universities where it has established a strong presence. The variety of proposals reflects how institutions have adopted and expanded LS models, indicating a stronger connection between universities and schools. The sustainability of LS hinges on the efforts of a core teaching and research group that not only transforms teaching but also explores learning processes in LS. There is growing interest in improving observation strategies and incorporating pedagogical knowledge in LS, although more in-depth analyses of the learning and teaching processes from both perspectives are still needed.

Research limitations/implications

Searching for references in English and Spanish may limit the visibility of relevant research conducted in other languages and regions, potentially excluding important experiences from non-English or non-Spanish-speaking countries.

Originality/value

This work is the first review of literature on LS in ITE focused on Europe, engaging with and building upon the latest global reviews in ITE and LS while introducing new areas of contrast.

Abstract

Purpose

While scholars have researched the impact of specific total quality management (TQM) aspects on innovation performance (INP), empirical evidence on how the former, as a composite construct, influences the latter is rare. To add, empirical evidence on the mechanism through which TQM passes to affect innovative behaviour (INB) and, then, INP is limited. Essentially, scholars have requested that future research look at the boundary conditions that support the adoption of TQM activities in businesses. Although the banking sector has experienced a number of transformations, there is still a need to raise the standard of service provided to bank customers. This research sheds more light on this subject.

Design/methodology/approach

This research tests the hypotheses in Ahinful et al.’s (2023) conceptual model using responses from 260 top- and middle-level bank managers by applying Smart PLS. Organisational support and team member exchange were used as potential control variables for the mediator, while slack resources and bank size were applied to the target endogenous latent construct. Mediation and moderation effects were estimated using the variance accounted for (VAF) and product indicator approaches, respectively. Sig. level was set at 5%.

Findings

This study found that TQM and INP had a positive and significant connection (ß = 0.303, p = 0.000), and INB partially mediated this connection (VAF = 40.92%). However, government regulation (GOV; ß = 0.055, p = 0.365), market dynamism (MKD; ß = 0.063, p = 0.434), competitive intensity (CMP; ß = 0.069, p = 0.297) and technological turbulence (TUR; ß = 0.011, p = 0.865) all failed to moderate the TQM–INB connection, although the expected positive directions of these moderation relationships were established.

Research limitations/implications

This research provides empirical evidence on the TQM–INP connection, how this connection may be mediated and how the TQM–INB connection may be activated. It also sheds light on novel ways in which service quality in the banking sector may be improved. Upcoming research may explore other control variables in their research. Since the moderating relationships were unsupported, this avenue is open for further research, particularly in other banking settings across the globe.

Practical implications

Practical lessons for bank consultants, regulators, customers, employees and managers are deliberated.

Originality/value

This research is novel. It is the first to test the hypotheses in Ahinful et al.’s (2023) conceptual model. This study advances the theoretical frameworks and existing knowledge within the TQM, innovation and performance management fields.
