Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to analyze the synergy of artificial intelligence (AI), with scientometrics, webometrics and bibliometrics to unlock and to emphasize the potential of the applications and benefits of AI algorithms in these fields.

Design/methodology/approach

By conducting a systematic literature review, our aim is to explore the potential of AI in revolutionizing the methods used to measure and analyze scholarly communication, identify emerging research trends and evaluate the impact of scientific publications. To achieve this, we implemented a comprehensive search strategy across reputable databases such as ProQuest, IEEE Explore, EBSCO, Web of Science and Scopus. Our search encompassed articles published from January 1, 2000, to September 2022, resulting in a thorough review of 61 relevant articles.

Findings

(1) Regarding scientometrics, the application of AI yields various distinct advantages, such as conducting analyses of publications, citations, research impact prediction, collaboration, research trend analysis and knowledge mapping, in a more objective and reliable framework. (2) In terms of webometrics, AI algorithms are able to enhance web crawling and data collection, web link analysis, web content analysis, social media analysis, web impact analysis and recommender systems. (3) Moreover, automation of data collection, analysis of citations, disambiguation of authors, analysis of co-authorship networks, assessment of research impact, text mining and recommender systems are considered as the potential of AI integration in the field of bibliometrics.

Originality/value

This study covers the particularly new benefits and potential of AI-enhanced scientometrics, webometrics and bibliometrics to highlight the significant prospects of the synergy of this integration through AI.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid urbanization in Nigeria has led to an increased demand for high-rise buildings, yet the construction industry continues to grapple with significant delays that impede project timelines, budgets, performance and the efficiency of post-construction facilities management (FM). Therefore, this study aims to investigate the key delay factors undermining high-rise project delivery in Nigeria using a case study approach to establish fundamental delay causes.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopted a mixed-method approach using questionnaires and interviews. Questions were formulated on the identified 38 common delay factors from the literature. Data acquired were analyzed using Relative Importance Index (RII), mean score, Kruskal–Wallis test and content analysis.

Findings

Key findings revealed 16 critical delay causal factors classified into 4 groups. This study unveils client-related and external factors as the most predominant causative groups. The top five most significant delay causative factors impacting high-rise projects’ performance were identified. Revealed lack of credit facilities and cash flow problems as the main factors inducing unanticipated delay events in high-rise projects. This study found delay factors experienced are excusable and compensable, particularly prominent during the finishing and procurement stages in high-rise projects.

Originality/value

This study unveils the critical delay causes undermining high-rise building project delivery in Nigeria, focusing on both construction and FM perspectives. Through a case study approach, it establishes fundamental delay causative factors and highlights their long-term impact on the operational efficiency and maintenance of high-rise buildings. This study provides built environment professionals insights into key delay factors, offering guidance on modifying work practices to improve project delivery and FM postcompletion.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to delve into the multidimensional structure of research motivation among master’s students in the humanities and social sciences and to develop an accurate tool for measuring their motivational levels.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used semistructured in-depth interviews with 21 master’s students from the humanities and social sciences. Grounded theory analysis was used to identify key dimensions of research motivation. An initial questionnaire with 24 items was developed based on the findings, which was then revised by experts and master’s students. The modified questionnaire was validated among 283 master’s students in Chinese universities. Further validation was conducted with 319 samples to assess reliability and model fit.

Findings

This study identified five key dimensions of research motivation: subjective norms, self-realization, emotional interest, social interaction and cognitive value. These dimensions were used to construct a research motivation model. The final validated questionnaire, containing 21 items, demonstrated good reliability and model fit, making it a robust tool for assessing research motivation in this specific group.

Originality/value

This study contributes to developing a tailored measurement tool of research motivation specifically for master’s students in the humanities and social sciences. It provides valuable insights for graduate education stakeholders, including educators, advisors and graduate management departments, by offering a deeper understanding of the motivational factors driving students’ research engagement and academic development.

Abstract

Purpose

The construction business is widely recognised for its inherent complexity and dynamic nature, which stems from the nature of the job involved. The industry is often regarded as one of the most challenging industries globally in terms of implementing environmental, health and safety (EHS) practices. However, in the absence of EHS, the construction industry cannot be considered sustainable. Therefore, this study aims to identify the trends, knowledge gaps and implications of EHS research to enhance construction activities and knowledge.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a science mapping approach involving bibliometric and scientometric analysis of 407 construction EHS publications from the Scopus database with the VOSviewer software. The study is based on journal articles from the Scopus database without restriction to any time range.

Findings

The main focus of construction EHS research identified in the study includes sustainability-related studies, risk-related, environmental issues, EHS management, integrated management systems studies, health and safety related and EHS in the construction process. Some emerging areas also identified include productivity, design, culture, social sustainability and machine learning. The most influential and productive publication sources, countries/regions and EHS publications with the highest impact were also determined.

Research limitations/implications

Documents published in the Scopus database were considered for analysis because of the wider coverage of the database. Journal articles written in English language represent the inclusion criteria, whereas other documents were excluded from the analysis. The study also limited the search to articles with the engineering subject area.

Practical implications

The research findings will enlighten stakeholders and practitioners on the focal knowledge areas in the EHS research domain, which are vital for enhancing EHS in the industry.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this review-based study is the first attempt to internationally conduct a science mapping on extant literature in the EHS research domain through bibliometric and scientometric assessments.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of corporate governance (CG) effectiveness measured by board and audit committee index on firm performance of nonfinancial listed firms in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, pre- and during the global crisis of COVID-19.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis used 2,238 observations from nonfinancial firms listed on GCC countries' stock exchange, covering the period from 2017 to 2022, using a fixed effect panel regression model. The data for this study were manually collected from the annual reports of 373 GCC-listed firms.

Findings

The results demonstrate that the board's effectiveness index has a positive influence solely on accounting-based performance (return on assets) pre- and during the COVID-19 crisis. However, in terms of audit committee effectiveness, the results show a positive impact on market-based performance (Tobin’s Q) both pre- and during the COVID-19 crisis. Additional analysis indicates that the effectiveness of both the board and audit committee is more notable in larger firms compared to smaller firms.

Practical implications

This study is crucial for investors, regulators, managers and governments tackling the financial impacts of global crises like COVID-19. Its comprehensive evaluation of board and audit committee effectiveness guides policymakers and practitioners in enhancing CG for profit and wealth maximization.

Originality/value

This study offers novel evidence detailing the impact of CG effectiveness on firm performance over an extended period, encompassing the COVID-19 period and using a comprehensive index. In addition, this study was conducted in a unique CG setting, focusing on six emerging GCC countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to create a comprehensive framework for selecting alternative materials in construction projects, integrating building information modeling (BIM) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Materials comprise 60%–65% of the total project cost, and current methods require significant time and human resources.

Design/methodology/approach

A prototype framework is developed that considers multiple criteria to optimize the material selection process, addressing the significant investment of time and resources required in current methods. The study uses surveys and interviews with construction professionals to collect primary data on alternative materials selection.

Findings

The results show that integrating BIM and the PSO algorithm improves cost optimization and material selection outcomes.

Originality/value

This comprehensive tool enhances decision-making capabilities and resource utilization, improving project outcomes and resource utilization. It offers a systematic approach to evaluating and selecting materials, making it a valuable resource for construction professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

Health and safety (H&S) management remains a significant global challenge in the construction industry. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) particularly struggle to comply with H&S regulations, resulting in high accident records. To address this poor performance, experts suggest that SMEs adopt H&S management technologies, particularly building information modeling (BIM), due to their potential to improve H&S practices. This study aims to determine the key predictors of construction SMEs’ intentions to adopt BIM for H&S management. The study also explores the potential impact of selected demographic variables on construction SMEs’ adoption intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative research was used using a questionnaire distributed to 357 randomly sampled SMEs. The questionnaire collected data regarding SMEs’ intention to adopt BIM for H&S management. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the research data.

Findings

The findings reveal specific “relative advantages”, which include “BIM for H&S management will be preferable to the manual use of the H&S file” and “BIM for H&S management will make it easier to comply with H&S regulations” as significant predictors of the intention to adopt BIM for H&S management. The study also underscores the significance of educational qualifications and professional affiliation as predictors of BIM adoption.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s sample population consisted of SMEs registered with the Construction Industry Development Board register of contractors in Gauteng province, South Africa. This regional focus limits the generalizability of the findings to the entire country. Further research is recommended to investigate the adoption of BIM for H&S management among SMEs in other South African provinces. Additionally, a comparative study exploring BIM adoption for H&S between large construction enterprises and SMEs within the South African context could provide valuable insights.

Practical implications

This study presents a novel approach, leveraging the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory and demographic analysis, to determine the key predictors of SMEs’ intentions to adopt BIM for H&S management.

Social implications

Socially, the study promotes the adoption of BIM for H&S. Digital technology is advancing and upgrades social standard, it is crucial for the society to adopt BIM for H&S.

Originality/value

Existing BIM for H&S management research has neglected SMEs’ adoption intentions, focusing instead on broader adoption enablers. This study presents a novel approach, leveraging the DOI theory and demographic analysis, to determine the key predictors of SMEs’ intentions to adopt BIM for H&S management.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary objective of this study is to analyze the correlation between the application of building information modeling (BIM), the construction project success (CPS) and project control. Additionally, this research aims to explore the potential mediating effect of project control on the link between BIM and construction project success in the Malaysian construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study employs a quantitative research methodology and adheres to a positivist research philosophy in order to examine the influence of BIM implementation on the CPS and project control within the Malaysian construction sector. The data were collected by structured questionnaire survey from 200 respondents using a purposive sampling strategy, and the results were analyzed by using partial least square (PLS)-structural equation modeling (SEM). The study's findings are all the more noteworthy since, despite the small sample size, 218 persons genuinely participated thanks to the purposive sampling approach.

Findings

The findings of this study indicate that there are notable and positive associations between various variables related to the implementation of BIM. These variables include accurate quantities and estimations, risk management, facility management integration, optimized resource allocation and real-time monitoring. Furthermore, these relationships are observed to have a significant impact on both CPS and project control. The study revealed that project control serves as a mediator in the relationship between the deployment of BIM and the CPS in the Malaysian construction sector, with the exception of its influence on risk management.

Originality/value

The originality of this research consists in examining the mediating function of project control in the relationship between BIM implementation and CPS. This study contributes to the existing knowledge by enhancing our understanding of the processes via which BIM positively influences project outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of financial management strategies on the financial performance of construction projects in Iraq, specifically investigating the moderating role of company size. The primary focus is to understand how different cost components contribute to performance and how this relationship varies between larger and smaller businesses in the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing a sample of 296 participants from the construction business in Iraq, this research employed a survey questionnaire. The WarpPLS software facilitated data analysis, employing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping for model validation. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with maximum likelihood estimation assessed the measurement model, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the financial management strategies and performance relationship.

Findings

The study reveals that equipment costs show no significant relationship with performance in Iraq’s construction industry. Larger construction firms exhibit a positive influence on financial performance from material costs, labour costs and permit/licencing fees compared to smaller firms. This suggests a moderation effect of size on the relationship between these cost components and financial outcomes, highlighting the nuanced impact of financial management strategies on performance.

Research limitations/implications

While shedding light on the size-dependent nuances in the relationship between financial strategies and performance, this study is confined to the construction industry in Iraq. The findings might not be universally applicable, and contextual variations should be considered. Additionally, the reliance on survey data introduces the potential for response bias. Future research could expand the scope to different industries and regions, incorporating diverse methodological approaches for a more comprehensive understanding of the nuances in the financial management and performance relationship.

Practical implications

Construction companies in Iraq can enhance project performance by strategically allocating resources and effectively managing costs, considering the nuanced impact of company size. Larger firms, in particular, should focus on optimising material costs, labour costs and permit/licensing fees to maximise financial outcomes. This study provides actionable insights for practitioners, guiding financial management decisions and offering practical recommendations for improving project performance in the Iraqi construction industry.

Social implications

The research contributes valuable insights to the Iraqi construction industry, an area with limited prior research on management matters. By emphasising the role of size in moderating the relationship between financial strategies and performance, the study informs industry stakeholders, policymakers and professionals about the importance of tailoring financial management approaches based on company size. This knowledge can potentially lead to improved financial outcomes, positively impacting the overall economic and social landscape in Iraq.

Originality/value

This research adds to the body of knowledge by examining the impact of company size on the relationship between financial management methods and performance in Iraq’s construction projects. The study’s originality lies in uncovering the moderating effect of size on the connection between specific cost components and financial performance. The findings provide a unique perspective on financial management strategies, offering construction companies valuable insights into optimising performance based on their size. Abstract

Purpose

The delay in real estate projects in India is pervasive. Organization and management (O&M) and project management (PM)-related challenges are argued to contribute to project delays. This study examined the O&M and PM factors that cause delays, the level of implementation of various O&M and PM aspects in real estate projects and how the challenges can be alleviated.

Design/methodology/approach

Perception surveys among the consumers and relevant stakeholders engaged in real estate projects in the Bhubaneswar and Cuttack regions of India were conducted to collect data on the factors of delay and implementation of the O&M and PM aspects. Relevant statistical methods and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used for data analysis.

Findings

Findings suggest that from the O&M point of view, poor decision-making, mishandling of finance, concurrent execution of many projects, diversion and misuse of finance for unrelated activities, lack of PM personnel and poor management contribute to the delay. Further, although the project initiation is satisfactorily done, most of the PM principles are not largely used, thus leading to delay.

Research limitations/implications

The study does have limitations, including its reliance on a perception survey of consumers and stakeholders, a limited sample size and a restricted number of projects. Nevertheless, the study highlights the need to address poor O&M and the insufficient application of PM principles to combat project delays in the Indian real estate sector.

Practical implications

Proper O&M and adequate application of PM will enable professional management of the projects and avoid delay.

Social implications

Proper O&M and the application of adequate PM would reduce delays in real estate projects. Consequently, conflicts between the companies and consumers might be reduced and housing and infrastructure demands might be met.

Originality/value

The study manifested that the lack of adequate implementation of O&M and PM aspects leads to delays. So, it is theorized that O&M and PM play critical roles in the success of real estate projects. Appropriate implementation of the principles and best practices linked to these aspects might alleviate the challenges of delay in real estate projects in India.
