Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the unique cultural attributes of a particular association. The research focuses on a single case study involving a civil society organization whose activities are focused within the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Specifically, the association under examination is a religious voluntary organization engaged in social activities within the Israeli Defense Forces.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection employed a qualitative approach using the case study method, with twenty in-depth ethnographic interviews conducted. The research questions guiding the study are: What are the hybrid structural characteristics of the religious association? How has this hybrid structure influenced the organizational culture?

Findings

The study identifies a hybrid structure comprising community, familial, and bureaucratic features. It reveals a blend of clan and bureaucratic cultural elements within the organization, demonstrating adaptability to the ideology of the Israeli Defense Forces.

Originality/value

The research uncovers an innovative hybrid structure that successfully navigates bureaucratic challenges and fosters a familial atmosphere contributing to communal benefits.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the phenomenon of mixing public floors within private development, shedding light on underlying rationales, the acceptability of integrating different uses, and the various challenges associated with the management and creation of these mixed-use, mixed-ownership buildings.

Design/methodology/approach

The topic is reviewed by examining the opinions and perceptions of expert planners and developers using a triangulation of qualitative interviews data and quantitative and qualitative analysis of survey results, cross-referenced with some grey literature in the form of planning tribunal decisions.

Findings

Findings suggest that the allocation of public floors is made in response to the shortage of land in high-demand areas with the aim of densifying development and making it more efficient. Experts were generally open to the concept of a private–public floorspace mix, noting that certain public land uses are better than others when combined as floorspace within private structures. Furthermore, the findings highlight managerial obstacles as well as issues with the process of allocating public floors in new plans.

Practical implications

The findings can be used to provide guidance for municipal authorities and developers looking to make the most of their available land, ensuring that both the public and private domains can coexist as cities continue to grow and become more densely populated in the future.

Originality/value

Few studies have reviewed this type of public–private mix, while highlighting challenges in their creation and management. The Israeli case-study in the paper showcases a unique context where high growth rates, increasing densification, and vertical development all spur development in this direction.

Abstract

Purpose

Current solutions for monitoring the progress of pavement construction (such as collecting, processing and analysing data) are inefficient, labour-intensive, time-consuming, tedious and error-prone. In this study, an automated solution proposes sensors prototype mounted unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for data collection, an LSTM classifier for road layer detection, the integrated algorithm for as-built progress calculation and web-based as-built reporting.

Design/methodology/approach

The crux of the proposed solution, the road layer detection model, is proposed to develop from the layer change detection model and rule-based reasoning. In the beginning, data were gathered using a UGV with a laser ToF (time-of-flight) distance sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope and GPS sensor in a controlled environment. The long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm was utilised on acquired data to develop a classifier model for layer change detection, such as layer not changed, layer up and layer down.

Findings

In controlled environment experiments, the classification of road layer changes achieved 94.35% test accuracy with 14.05% loss. Subsequently, the proposed approach, including the layer detection model, as-built measurement algorithm and reporting, was successfully implemented with a real case study to test the robustness of the model and measure the as-built progress.

Research limitations/implications

The implementation of the proposed framework can allow continuous, real-time monitoring of road construction projects, eliminating the need for manual, time-consuming methods. This study will potentially help the construction industry in the real time decision-making process of construction progress monitoring and controlling action.

Originality/value

This first novel approach marks the first utilization of sensors mounted UGV for monitoring road construction progress, filling a crucial research gap in incremental and segment-wise construction monitoring and offering a solution that addresses challenges faced by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and 3D reconstruction. Utilizing UGVs offers advantages like cost-effectiveness, safety and operational flexibility in no-fly zones.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumers’ preferences for more sustainable dietary patterns and more climate-friendly foods can play a significant role in mitigating the effects of climate change. Accordingly, the present cross-sectional study aimed to examine the role of climate change worry and awareness of ecological footprint reduction behaviours in undergraduate consumers’ adherence to the Mediterranean diet and climate-friendly food choices.

Design/methodology/approach

This cross-sectional study was carried out with 600 healthy undergraduate students, including 255 (42.5%) males and 345 (57.5%) females. They completed the climate change worry scale, the awareness scale for reducing ecological footprint and the Mediterranean diet adherence scale. In addition, participants’ climate-friendly diet scores (CFDS) were calculated to evaluate climate-friendly food choices. Data were analysed using SPSS software.

Findings

Linear regression models indicated that climate change worry was positively associated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet (β = 0.121, p = 0.003) and CFDS (β = 0.087, p < 0.001). Similarly, a positive association was observed between the awareness of ecological footprint reduction behaviours and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (β = 0.179, p < 0.001) and CFDS (β = 0.098, p < 0.001).

Research limitations/implications

The results may indicate that worry about climate change and awareness of ecological footprint reduction behaviours can promote higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet and more climate-friendly food choices, but the observed associations do not imply causality, and further studies are required to determine whether causal links exist.

Originality/value

This study examined the relationships between climate change worry, awareness of ecological footprint reduction behaviours, adherence to the Mediterranean diet and climate-friendly food choices in a single study on undergraduate students.
