Abstract
Purpose
The continuous upgrading of new technologies and rapid changes in their external environment have made organizations more dependent than ever on the ability of their employees to quickly identify problems and make timely course corrections. This dependency is not limited to individual employee voice but extends to the collective voice of the team. In the Chinese context, collective silence prevails. Following social identity theory, this study aims to explore the mechanisms and conditional processes underlying the relationship between team faultlines and team voice behavior and examine whether there are differences between the effects of objective and perceived faultlines.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed model was tested through questionnaires with 377 team members from 71 teams, which were conducted through team leader–member pairing survey. The correlation and hierarchical stepwise regression analyses were used to test the hypotheses rigorously, and the questionnaire data was analyzed using SPSS 26.0, AMOS 25.0 and R 3.6.1.
Findings
The results show that both objective and perceived faultlines have a negative impact on team voice behavior and that the latter has a stronger negative effect. Team psychological safety mediates the relationship between team faultlines and team voice behavior. In addition, benevolent leadership, moral leadership and Zhongyong thinking positively moderate the negative effect of objective faultlines on team voice behavior; Zhongyong thinking also moderates the mediating effect of team psychological safety on the relationship between objective faultlines and team voice behavior.
Originality/value
The results of this study provide a deeper understanding of team faultlines and team voice behavior, and practical implications are provided for managers and future researchers to improve voice behavior in organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
Effective forensic interviewing is crucial, particularly if the interview is the only source of evidence. Whilst there are a number of interview models that advocate for reflective practice, the evaluation of interviews rarely gets the time or attention it deserves. This is concerning, given that interviewer skills drop significantly after six months, and there are limited opportunities for refresher training. This study aims to explore how law enforcement officers reflect upon and evaluate their interviews and seek their insight into what they believe an effective evaluation tool would constitute.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 32 officers from three police forces in England and Wales and six international security organisations completed a qualitative questionnaire that explored their views on how interview evaluation is conducted and the impact on the interview, and how technology could assist in this important stage in terms of usability, efficacy and capability of a new evaluation tool.
Findings
Thematic analysis was used, resulting in three overall themes being identified from the data. These focused on current evaluation methods, barriers to conducting evaluations and technological solutions.
Originality/value
The findings are discussed in relation to interviewing and the development of tools to assist in evaluations. Implications for practice include the need for much more effort to be put into (re)introducing the evaluation stage into training to ensure that officers are allowed to reflect upon and evaluate their interview performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze why listed Taiwanese firms uniquely rejected the early adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in 2012. It investigates the underlying decision-making processes behind this policy reluctance to further understand the continuous phenomenon of rare voluntary IFRS adoption.
Design/methodology/approach
It reports on fieldwork evidence obtained in situ by in-depth interviewing in Mandarin. It uses qualitative methods, complemented by quantitative cost-benefit metrics of IFRS adoption. It presents five diverse illustrative case-study vignettes, using a judgment sample based on expert opinion.
Findings
While the net-benefits of implementing IFRS varied across firms, this study’s unanimous finding was that no firms (in the sample or population) adopted IFRS early, despite stated intentions to the contrary. The key reasons for shunning early IFRS adoption were found to be frequent changes in regulations, insufficient benefits from adopting IFRS and the undermining of comparability across companies, compounded with scarce preparation time. Further, this study found that the Taiwanese accounting regulator’s reluctance toward IFRS adoption, partly caused by a long-standing US influence, contributed to this anomalous outcome.
Practical implications
This study recommends two critical policy changes: more realistic timelines and less frequent regulatory changes.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the reasons behind the anomaly of no early adoption of IFRS in Taiwan, using new primary data and illustrative case studies. Its novelty lies in extending understanding beyond the existing quantitative literature on accounting standards, using new “thick” qualitative evidence on motives for such choices and decision-making processes, which have been neglected in previous work.

Abstract
Purpose
Understanding of wellbeing has improved in recent years, and the literature has established some links between wellbeing and aggression, which appears to be theoretically supported. “Hedonia” (maximising positive emotions and minimising negative emotions) and “eudaimonia” (living well and with meaning), two core components of wellbeing, are targeted by the Stoicism programme, which is currently being run in a prison for male foreign national offenders. The purpose of these studies was therefore to measure the impact of the programme on self-reported participant wellbeing and aggression.
Design/methodology/approach
Two studies have been completed with foreign national offenders who participated in the Stoicism programme. The studies aimed to evaluate the impact of this programme using pre- and post-programme self-report measures of wellbeing and aggression. Supplementary manifest content analysis was also used with sub-samples of participants.
Findings
Both studies found significant improvements in participant wellbeing. Study 1 found significant improvement on self-reported hostility (a subscale of the aggression measure), but not in the other subscales or in aggression overall. Study 2 found improvements across all scales. The findings suggest that the Stoicism programme is achieving changes in wellbeing, could be contributing to aggression reduction and provides support for the relationship between wellbeing and aggression.
Practical implications
It is possible the findings suggest the Stoicism programme may provide a further approach to improving safety in His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Services (HMPPS), that the gymnasium environment may in itself be conducive to prisoner wellbeing and engagement, and that philosophical approaches may have meaningful benefits in the prison setting.
Originality/value
There are limitations to these studies, most notably in the sample sizes, lack of control group and the research design focused solely on participant self-report. However, the programme has not been previously evaluated, so these initial findings are important in understanding the possible impact of the programme. Future research would therefore benefit from evaluating the programme itself (including the environment in which it is run), examining the specific sub-types of wellbeing separately and examining participant aggression in further depth and with a larger sample.

Purpose
This study aims to analyze the sentiments expressed in YouTube comments on videos from top dermatology channels, focusing on how social media mavens affect consumer behavior and perceptions related to cosmetic treatments.
Design/methodology/approach
The study utilized sentiment analysis to examine 300 comments from the top five YouTube dermatology channels using NVivo 14, a qualitative data analysis software. It categorized the comments into positive, negative, neutral and mixed sentiments to understand the impact of the content on viewers.
Findings
The analysis revealed that 54% of the comments were positive, 5.7% were negative, 18.7% were neutral and 21.6% were mixed. The study found that videos from dermatology influencers significantly impact viewers, with positive comments highlighting the informative nature of the content and negative feedback suggesting areas for improvement.
Research limitations/implications
The findings provide actionable insights for marketers and practitioners in the esthetic dermatology industry, emphasizing the importance of creating high-quality, informative content that addresses viewer concerns and ethical considerations in influencer marketing.
Originality/value
This study uniquely contributes to the literature by focusing on sentiment analysis of YouTube comments related to cosmetic surgery, offering insights into the influence of dermatology content creators on consumer behavior.

Growing technology adoption is a significant opportunity for the growth of the mobile gaming market. Rising smartphones allow game developers to reach more players and make more money. The study offers guidance for mobile game developers to increase profits and extend the longevity of their games. It aims to assist in making better marketing policy decisions by providing valuable insights into effective approaches for both early and subsequent market penetration stages.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents a model for analyzing factors that influence the attraction and retention of mobile gamers, which is based on a literature review of mobile gaming and uses the Bass diffusion model and system dynamics method for modeling and simulation.
Findings
In the initial stages of a game release, influencer marketing can be more effective than other marketing tools in increasing visibility. As the game progresses, incorporating referral programs can enhance user engagement, promote the game further, and reduce the number of uninstalls. Influencer marketing can also help the games reach a wider audience, generating more interest, and increasing installations for more tremendous success in the market. However, referral programs can extend the lifespan of games, mainly when gamers are engaged.
Originality/value
The study used new marketing strategies in the mobile game industry to gain insights into the growth and evolution of this industry. Development managers can use insights for effective policies and success. The model aids in understanding the dynamics of mobile games and informed decisions for game developers.

Abstract
Purpose
The severity of global competition and vast hostile challenges is compelling the information and communications technology (ICT) industry to focus on internal organizational factors to excel in performance. This study investigates the influence of shared responsibility, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality on employees’ performance through work engagement. In addition, the moderating influence of work orientation on the relationships between shared responsibility, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality with employee performance was also investigated.
Design/methodology/approach
Time-lagged and multisource data were acquired from 267 followers and their 69 immediate supervisors/managers of ICT firms. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the data.
Findings
The findings reveal that the impact of shared responsibilities, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality on performance (e.g. extra-role and in-role) is mediated by work engagement. Additionally, the positive association of perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality with work engagement is more pronounced when work orientation is high, indicating a positive moderation of work orientation.
Originality/value
This is among the initial studies that examine the impact of shared responsibility, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality on overall employee performance through work engagement. The moderation of work orientation in these proposed relationships has not been previously examined. This study suggests novel theoretical and managerial implications for the ICT industry based on the results.

Purpose
Health technologies are an issue that directly affects the sustainability and quality of health services. Due to budget constraints, it is not financially possible for businesses to apply comprehensive improvement strategies to all these criteria. In this case, it is possible for businesses to implement more priority strategies. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to evaluate the important performance indicators of health technology investments.
Design/methodology/approach
Firstly, with the help of the artificial intelligence system, a decision matrix is established. Secondly, spherical fuzzy total order of preference decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory methodology is taken into consideration for weighting the criteria. Thirdly, emerging seven countries are ranked by using spherical fuzzy MultiAtributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA).
Findings
The findings demonstrate that the criteria of health policies and research and development are defined as the most significant factor in this regard. China and Turkey are also found to be the most successful emerging countries with respect to the performance of health technology investments.
Originality/value
The main contribution of this study is that a novel decision-making model is generated by integrating artificial methodology into the spherical fuzzy sets.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine and identify how the resource-based view and dynamic capability theory contribute to information and communication technology (ICT) adoption to improve micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) performance, mediated by distinctive competencies. This research provides insight into how MSMEs can improve performance by strategically adopting ICT tools and developing distinctive competencies.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected through online questionnaires from creative industry MSMEs (fashion, culinary and crafts) in Indonesia. The results were analyzed using the partial least squares-structural equation method technique (Fornell and Cha, 1994) with Smart PLS 3.0 (Ringle et al., 2015).
Findings
The results show that ICT adoption significantly impacts the MSMEs marketing performance in the creative industry sector. In addition, adopting ICT tools influences the development of distinctive competencies among MSMEs, improving MSMEs marketing performance. Distinctive competencies were found to mediate the relationship between ICT adoption and MSMEs marketing performance, which underscores the importance of technology skills, organizational skills, environmental skills and entrepreneurial mindset in driving business success. These findings highlight the critical role of distinctive competencies as a key factor in leveraging ICT adoption to improve MSMEs marketing performance.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation is that this research coverage area is less extensive due to the time constraints of this study. Future work could cover different regions and explore other mediators in the ICT–performance relationship.
Practical implications
This research assists MSMEs in improving performance by adopting ICT and developing distinctive competencies with targeted training in relevant skills.
Social implications
This research highlights the potential to improve MSMEs marketing performance and drive economic growth and resilience through ICT adoption.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence of the relationship between ICT adoption, distinctive competencies and MSME marketing performance in the context of the creative industries sector. This study offers a new perspective on how MSMEs can use ICT tools and develop distinctive competencies to enhance their marketing performance competitive advantage and achieve sustainable growth. By emphasizing the mediating role of distinctive competencies, this study highlights how ICT adoption impacts positively MSME marketing performance, providing valuable insights for practitioners, policymakers and researchers in entrepreneurship and technology adoption.

This study aims to use event system theory and job demands–resources (JD-R) model to examine the double-edged sword effect of event strength of Beijing Winter Olympics (BWO) on volunteers’ in-role performance and proactive behavior as mediated by work overload and meaningfulness.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample included 193 volunteer–leader dyads working at one BWO venue. The authors conducted a multitime and multisource study using Mplus 8 to examine the hypotheses.
Findings
Volunteers’ perceived BWO event strength was positively related to work overload, which reduced in-role performance and proactive behavior. Volunteers’ perceived BWO event strength was also positively related to work meaningfulness, which promoted in-role performance and proactive behavior. Perceived organizational support served as a moderator by mitigating the positive relationship between perceived BWO event strength and work overload; however, it did not strengthen the positive relationship between perceived BWO event strength and work meaningfulness.
Originality/value
This study developed a comprehensive model of how BWO event strength affected volunteers’ performance from the perspective of event system theory and the JD-R model, which enriches theoretical application and research in the context of mega sport events.

Objetivo
Este estudio utiliza la teoría del sistema de eventos y el modelo de demandas de trabajo-recursos (JD-R) para examinar el efecto de doble filo de la fuerza del evento de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno de Pekín (BWO) sobre el rendimiento en el rol y el comportamiento proactivo de los voluntarios, mediado por la sobrecarga laboral y la significatividad del trabajo.
Diseño/metodología/enfoque
Nuestra muestra incluyó 193 díadas de voluntarios-líderes que trabajaban en una sede de BWO. Realizamos un estudio multitemporal y multifuente utilizando Mplus 8 para examinar nuestras hipótesis.
Resultados
La intensidad percibida por los voluntarios en los eventos de BWO también se relacionó positivamente con la significación del trabajo, que promovió el rendimiento en el rol y el comportamiento proactivo. Además, el apoyo organizativo percibido sirvió como moderador al mitigar la relación positiva entre la intensidad percibida del evento BWO y la sobrecarga de trabajo; sin embargo, no reforzó la relación positiva entre la intensidad percibida del evento BWO y la significatividad del trabajo.
Originalidad/valor
Este estudio desarrolló un modelo integral de cómo la fuerza del evento BWO afectaba al rendimiento de los voluntarios desde la perspectiva de la teoría del sistema de eventos y el modelo JD-R, lo que enriquece la aplicación teórica y la investigación en el contexto de los megaeventos deportivos.
