Abstract

Purpose

Teaching wine tasting online is challenging, even given the curated digital tools of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, a highly renowned online wine certification system is used. This paper aims to initially explore wine experts’ opinions about online wine education and subsequently examine the feasibility of customizing wine appreciation lexicons for Chinese learners.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-study multimethod approach was adopted. Study 1, a two-stage Delphi study, was conducted with 17 wine experts representing a number of countries, using a mix of closed/open-ended questions in an online survey. Data was collected in a market study in Study 2, conducted at agricultural markets in Thailand (pilot test) and China. Dialogues with market sellers were undertaken, evoking mental imagery of wine descriptors to explore the relevance of traditional versus local aromas and flavors in describing wine.

Findings

Findings concentrate on three main areas: general advantages/disadvantages of online wine education, reactions toward asynchronous/synchronous methods of wine tasting and, finally, the feasibility of customizing a wine appreciation lexicon for Chinese learners.

Originality/value

The study presents novel insights into the role of online wine education in China.

Abstract

Purpose

This article reviews the intercultural adaptability (IA) development models for students in South Korea and China in response to the growing internationalisation of higher education. The article provides significant implications for Confucian heritage culture (CHC) countries and others that wish to enhance in higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

This scoping review systematically investigates the literature on different IA development strategies for students in higher education across these two Asian countries.

Findings

South Korea has promoted the self-growth model reflected in internationalised programmes such as English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), an international learning environment with an increasing number of international students and student exchange programmes. Through these initiatives, domestic students’ identity and intercultural learning dynamics are enriched in an intercultural learning environment. Meanwhile, China has adopted the “Outward-oriented” higher education internationalisation model to attract international students to study in Chinese universities and entice Chinese returnees through its International Talent Training Programmes. In this strategy, international students are exposed to Chinese language and cultural knowledge development programmes, and Chinese students are motivated to learn the English language and cultures through interactions with their international peers.

Originality/value

Student IA development models in CHC countries remain underexplored. This article responds to the need of higher education institutions in Asian countries that wish to access and learn from effective IA models from other CHC countries. The study makes a valuable contribution by putting forward significant recommendations for developing students’ IA in CHC countries.

Abstract

Purpose

We developed and studied an approach to measuring the quality of coaching meetings. Coaching is a professional development approach that has been implemented in education settings for several decades to support teachers and other practitioners in providing effective instruction. As coaching has become more prevalent, it has become clear that the field needs tools to measure coaching quality.

Design/methodology/approach

The coaching quality checklist (CQC) is a measure based on the empirical and theoretical literature on coaching. It has 26 items designed to measure three constructs: foundational, supportive and change-oriented coaching skills. In this study, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis of the CQC.

Findings

We found the one-factor model fit the data well. The hypothesized higher-order three subfactor model fit the data better but not significantly so. Additional research is needed to further validate the CQC using a larger sample and examine different types of validity.

Originality/value

The CQC is a promising tool for measuring coaching quality, which can help ensure that teachers are provided with high-quality professional development to support their use of interventions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and test an integrated model to examine the relationship between work engagement and three facets of perceived job performance (PJP). The authors argue that work engagement might not optimally improve PJP unless it is channelized through information and communication technology orientation.

Design/methodology/approach

Data for the present research were collected from higher educational institutes in the northern region of India by using a convenient sampling technique. Results of structural equation modeling (SEM) through AMOS 20 revealed that work engagement facilitates all three facets i.e. task performance, contextual performance and adaptive performance of teaching professionals. Furthermore, SEM results established the partial mediating effect of information and communication technology orientation between work engagement, task performance, contextual performance and adaptive performance.

Findings

Findings from present research contribute theoretically as well as practically to job performance and work engagement literature by giving insights to administrators and practitioners on how to improve the overall job performance of teaching professionals by enhancing their engagement and addressing their need for digital know-how.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to study the impact of work engagement and information and communication technology on the three facets of PJP using a diverse sample of 1030 teachers from universities in North India.

Abstract

Purpose

The converging global trends for countries and educational institutions is to push the boundaries of science and develop new technologies through the application of internationalization strategies. However, the extent to which higher education institutions (HEIs) participate and apply internationalization strategies in higher education (IOHE) varies by institution and region.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed the multi-level ordinal regression to estimate how various factors influence the rationales to internationalize higher education.

Findings

The study revealed that the salience of HEIs choice of a specific rationale for the IOHE stems from either the academic, administrative and socio-cultural levels.

Research limitations/implications

This article posits, particularly for Kenyan universities, that proper identification of their needs and wants for their higher education is key to successfully engage in IOHE. This recognition of needs and wants places them in the right position to identify appropriate rationales to engage in this complex process.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study is based on the fact that in Sub-Saharan Africa, research on the rationales for the IOHE in universities is highly lacking. A focus on more localized contexts is a critical starting point for these institutions to own and situate the internationalization process in a way that meets their needs.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing from the literature on internationalization, higher education marketing and place branding, this paper aims to link the internationalization of higher education to country branding. It explores the impact of internationalization within the higher education system on Egypt’s destination brand equity. This investigation offers insights for decision-makers in both the higher education and country branding sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

This empirical paper adopts an exploratory approach and serves as an initial step for researchers. It utilizes a quantitative methodology, employing a survey with 366 responses, to examine the effects of internationalization efforts in higher education on country brand equity.

Findings

The results reveal a direct correlation between student engagement and the brand equity of international branch campuses (IBCs), as well as a link between IBCs and Egypt’s brand equity. Notably, the study highlights the mediating role of IBC brand equity in the relationship between student engagement and the overall brand equity of Egypt.

Originality/value

This paper is innovative in its method of assessing the impact of internationalization efforts in higher education, specifically at IBCs in Egypt, on Egypt’s destination brand equity. Additionally, the study identifies student engagement as an antecedent to IBC brand equity.

Abstract

Purpose

Studies and programming on belonging in higher education tend to focus on college students’ sense of belonging, but the experiences of faculty and staff are equally important. Minoritized faculty and staff disproportionately report lower levels of sense of belonging and experience greater turnover outcomes. A sense of belonging among faculty and staff lessens their intention to quit, facilitates research collaboration and increases organizational commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this scoping review, we analyzed 24 articles yielded from three databases (Academic Search Complete, JSTOR and Web of Science) that synthesize extant literature on faculty and staff’s sense of belonging.

Findings

We found that a sense of belonging for faculty and staff (1) is often examined without being consistently defined; (2) can be hindered by the stigmatization of minoritized identities (e.g. race, gender and class), exclusive organizational policies and the academy’s socio-political structure remain barriers to a sense of belonging and (3) can be fostered through social support, celebrating professional legitimacy and valuing diversity.

Originality/value

This study details the educational landscape of sense of belonging for faculty, and call for more attention to sense of belonging for staff, so that higher education institutions can utilize organizational policies and interventions to help foster a sense of belonging, which can lead to an increase in productivity, retention and job satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

This manuscript addresses the emerging tension between healthcare providers and regulatory authorities as the delivery of healthcare transitions from Volume-based Healthcare to Value-based Healthcare (VBH). In Volume-based healthcare, the more patients a doctor sees, the more money she makes. The more expensive drugs and treatments the doctor provides, the more money she makes. In VBH, keeping patients healthy with a focus on patient outcomes offers the potential to deliver improved healthcare outcomes along with cost reduction. In Volume-based Healthcare, there is an incentive to induce referrals and offer remuneration seeking referrals subjecting healthcare providers to Fraud and Abuse and Antikickback regulations. In VBH, there is no incentive to do more to achieve more income. The problem is: where do you draw the line between helping providers and patients by offering services and goods that achieve quality and cost reduction without running afoul of the law. This emerging tension is exacerbated by the emergence of social determinants of healthcare (SDOH) that have more to do with the quality of one’s healthcare than direct clinical care, medicines and medical devices.

Design/methodology/approach

This manuscript is based entirely on a narrative review and secondary research. No primary research has been conducted.

Findings

VBH offers the potential to achieve The Triple Aim: improve patient healthcare outcomes; enhance patient access to healthcare and satisfaction; and reduce costs. SDOH such as poverty, food deserts, crime, education, homelessness, transportation and more have more of an impact on the quality of one’s healthcare than direct clinical healthcare. Healthcare marketers can move beyond just selling goods and services to offering value that addresses the SDOH that stand in the way of achieving good health.

Research limitations/implications

This emerging approach to healthcare delivery is relatively new. Government has set the theme for this transformation by announcing a “regulatory sprint toward value-based healthcare”. The regulatory authorities like the Department of Justice, The Office of Inspector General (OIG) and State Attorneys General recognize that Fraud and Abuse and Antikickback can be obstacles to providing VBH. This new approach to healthcare delivery formally launched in January 2021 so there is little research on strategy and marketing guidance.

Practical implications

The varied healthcare providers such as hospitals, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and contractual healthcare networks such as Accountable Care Organizations and Clinically Integrated Networks are just beginning to move forward on this new paradigm.

Social implications

Social implications are huge. SDOH provide a real-world context in attempting to achieve improved healthcare. Take the example of an older patient with Type 2 diabetes along with a number of additional comorbidities such as obesity, depression, and more. The patient needs insulin for her diabetes, but she is homeless and lives under a bridge. What good is the best doctor, best hospital, best medicines if the patient is homeless.

Originality/value

The research on this healthcare delivery transition is just beginning to emerge.

Abstract

Purpose

March 2020 signaled school closures and moves online for many institutions, but an online EdD program at a midsize, Christian university featured fewer than-expected programmatic changes. Because of its modality, program operations continued with relatively few changes. Although COVID-19-related campus closures did not interrupt these students’ scheduled courses, they substantively impacted their personal and professional lives. As a result, the authors in the program-specific writing center serving these students found themselves helping them navigate not only stresses related to the already-strenuous task of writing a dissertation but also personal and professional anxieties related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to explore and reflect on the strategies employed by a program‐specific writing center to support doctoral students during the COVID‐19 pandemic, focusing on relaxed scheduling policies, emotional support beyond writing, and fostering deeper interpersonal connections to address the unique challenges students faced during this period.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted an autoethnographic exploration of their experiences to consider and examine effective strategies for supporting students in times of stress. The authors guided this inquiry by reviewing logs, notes and video recordings of sessions held or rescheduled in Spring 2020.

Findings

The authors identified three major themes in how they adjusted their approach to considering the pandemic: relaxed scheduling policies, emotional support beyond the writing process by permitting students to set the writing aside while they focused on the more immediate concerns emerging from the rapid onset of pandemic life and intentionally using the opportunity to form deeper interpersonal connections with students in their home environments.

Originality/value

As institutions reflect on lessons learned during pandemic stresses, closures and mandates, intentional exploration and reflection allow for a greater understanding of what improvements the authors can make to future practice. This uniquely positioned study offers a valuable perspective on supporting students through crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

Grounded in upper echelons theory (UET) and conflict theory, the purpose of this study is to analyzes the innovative behavior of family firms from the perspective of the cognitive differences between successors and senior managers.

Design/methodology/approach

This research employed a sample listed family firms in China. The obtained results were subjected to hierarchical regression analysis, complemented by rigorous model robustness testing through propensity score matching and regression with substitution variables.

Findings

Successors engender task conflicts with family members in the top management team (TMT) due to cognitive differences, thereby stimulating corporate innovation. Conversely, successors engender relationship conflicts with non-family members in the TMT, impeding innovation. Furthermore, the performance expectations and the gender of the successor CEO also influence the relationship between cognitive differences and innovation between the successor and the TMT.

Originality/value

This study's originality and value lie in its innovative application of UET and conflict perspectives to dissect the intricate layers of intergenerational cognitive differences and their impact on the innovative behavior of family firms. It augments our comprehension of how the internal dynamics within family firms shape strategic innovation decisions.
