Abstract

Purpose

This study developed a theoretical model to test the relationship between digital capability and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and its effect on innovation performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed theoretical model was evaluated using partial least-squares structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. The data were obtained from a sample of 536 SMEs in Chile.

Findings

The proposed model presented two dimensions of digital capability: management and information and communication technologies (ICTs). Management models composed of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management systems are essential for optimizing organizational management. Meanwhile, ICTs facilitate the smooth flow of information within an organization, leading to improved efficiency in production processes. I4.0 is encouraged by exposing SMEs to base technologies such as data analytics. These results confirm that I4.0 influences innovation performance.

Practical implications

SME managers should encourage the development of digital capabilities to transition toward I4.0, as this can make SMEs more competitive and innovative in changing and dynamic scenarios.

Social implications

I4.0 adoption and the development of digital capabilities can directly affect employment and national economic growth.

Originality/value

Most studies focus on the organizational factors affecting SMEs’ I4.0 adoption. They do not, however, address the role played by current digital capability in I4.0 technology adoption and its effect on firms’ innovation performance.

Propósito

Este estudio desarrolló un modelo teórico para probar la relación entre la capacidad digital y la Industria 4.0 (I4.0) y su efecto en el desempeño de la innovación en pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYME).

Diseño/método/enfoque

El modelo teórico propuesto se evaluó mediante el uso de modelos de ecuaciones estructurales de mínimos cuadrados parciales y análisis comparativo cualitativo de conjuntos difusos. Los datos se obtuvieron de una muestra de 536 pymes de Chile.

Resultados

El modelo propuesto presenta dos dimensiones de la capacidad digital: la gestión y las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC). Los modelos de gestión compuestos por sistemas de planificación de recursos empresariales y de gestión de relaciones con los clientes son esenciales para optimizar la gestión organizacional. Por su parte, las TIC facilitan el flujo fluido de información dentro de una organización, lo que conduce a una mejora de la eficiencia en los procesos de producción. La I4.0 se fomenta exponiendo a las PYME a tecnologías de base como el análisis de datos. Estos resultados confirman que la I4.0 influye en el rendimiento de la innovación.

Originalidad

La mayoría de los estudios se centran en los factores organizativos que afectan a la adopción de la I4.0 por parte de las pymes, pero no abordan el papel que desempeña la capacidad digital actual en la adopción de la tecnología I4.0 y su efecto en el desempeño innovador de las empresas.

Implicaciones prácticas

Los gestores de las PYMES deben incentivar el desarrollo de capacidades digitales para realizar la transición hacia la I4.0, ya que esto puede hacer que las PYMES sean más competitivas e innovadoras en escenarios cambiantes y dinámicos.

Implicaciones sociales

La adopción de la I4.0 y el desarrollo de capacidades digitales pueden afectar directamente al empleo y al crecimiento económico nacional.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors investigate conditions that drive innovation performance in foreign-owned subsidiaries. The authors study five variables affecting innovation performance: organizational agility and digital capabilities as the main drivers and competencies and embeddedness in internal and external networks as complementary antecedents of innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors draw on the neo-configurational perspective and apply fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to empirically test survey data from subsidiaries located in the emerging economies of Thailand and Vietnam.

Findings

While the authors find no single condition on its own determining innovation performance, the authors do find that in concert they form four configurations of high innovation performance. The results indicate that all configurations contain competencies, as well as that subsidiaries should prioritize between internal and external networks to complement agility, digital capabilities, to achieve high innovation performance. The authors also reveal intriguing contextual differences in the innovation performance configurations between the two host countries.

Originality/value

By incorporating causal complexity as well as substitutability and complementarity of innovation drivers, the authors extend the current understanding of subsidiary innovation performance outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

The literature on the potential benefits of art investing has yet to consider the effects of categorizing world regional art markets (e.g. Latin American art) by artistic styles or movements (e.g. Latin American surrealism, Latin American conceptual art, etc.). We propose that such categorization should be carried out and analyze the Latin American art market as an example.

Design/methodology/approach

Eleven artistic style price indices within the Latin American art market (30,288 artworks created by 293 artists and sold at auction between 1970 and 2014) are estimated using hedonic regressions: Abstract-geometric, abstract-informal, conceptual, costumbrismo, cubism, figurative, muralism, landscape, surrealism, nineteenth century and avant-garde. We find that several variables that rely on the corresponding Latin American art movement index have a significant relationship with painting prices.

Findings

There is significant variation in the financial performance of the various price indices for Latin American art styles: the conceptual (10.33% annual real return), abstract geometric (1.97%), cubism (0.97%) and costumbrismo (0.91%) movements overperformed a market that exhibited an aggregate negative cumulated real return of 0.9% during the sample period. The average correlation between each of the styles was only 0.12. The estimated price index for paintings sold at Christie's and Sotheby's clearly outperformed the index estimated for the other auction houses, and we also found that paintings created by Latin American women artists yielded higher returns.

Practical implications

Our results have practical applications for investors, collectors, auction houses and policymakers.

Originality/value

This is the first paper to highlight the need to decompose art price indices by artistic movements at the regional level.

Abstract

Purpose

This study is motivated by the rising regulatory demand for new digital solutions enabling searchable and comparable sustainability corporate information. It aims at uncovering the antecedents of the technological major benefits highlighted by the ongoing scientific debate on the digitalization processes implemented by firms. Therefore, this paper focuses on the factors related to the emergence of digital accounting, reporting and disclosure of sustainability corporate information.

Design/methodology/approach

Following the Technology-Organization-Environment framework, the authors review and classify the factors identified by current academic literature that may enable or constraint the use of digital solutions for collecting, reporting and disclosing corporate non-financial information. A total of 86 sources were retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science and reviewed following a systematic approach.

Findings

Results show an increasing interest in the digitalization of corporate sustainability accounting and reporting and highlight some related drivers with a predominance of technological and environmental enablers (e.g. compatibility, stakeholders pressure) along with organizational constraints (e.g. need for technical and training programmes) influencing the ongoing adoption of new technologies for both internal and inter-organizational purposes.

Research limitations/implications

The authors provide several research directions for enhancing the academic interest in corporate accounting digitalization.

Practical implications

This paper offers practical contributions to regulators and companies concerning the challenges they should face in applying new technologies for non-financial reporting purposes.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first systematic literature review on the enablers and constraints of digitalization of sustainability accounting, reporting and disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

This research analyses how dialogical communication on social media enhances the effectiveness of sustainability messages in terms of brand engagement and purchase intention. Dialogical messages generate social media engagement, which helps improve consumer responses.

Design/methodology/approach

Two experimental studies (2 × 2) were conducted, in which two factors were manipulated: the dialogical potential of the message (dialogical versus monological) and message orientation (sustainability versus commercial).

Findings

The dialogical potential of the message moderates the effect of sustainability messages on brand engagement and purchase intention. Results indicate that sustainability messages featuring dialogical elements generate greater brand engagement and purchase intention than commercial messages. Furthermore, social media engagement mediates these effects.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable insights into applying dialogical principles to sustainability communication on social media. Marketers should design dialogical messages to foster dialogue with customers and enhance engagement.

Originality/value

Few studies have focused on analysing the effects of applying dialogical strategies on social media to communicate sustainability. Thus, this study highlights the importance of dialogical communication beyond the inclusion of interactive elements when communicating sustainability on social media. The inclusion of dialogical features specifically benefits sustainability messages, given the transparency and honesty they demand.

Abstract

Purpose

The city of Quito is a World Heritage Site (WHS) in Ecuador and the city owns one of the best-preserved and extensive historic centers in Latin America for cultural tourism. This study aims to identify the factors that constitute perceived value construct at the WHS of Quito.

Design/methodology/approach

This research collects data from tourists who have visited the city of Quito, Ecuador. A total of 381 on-site questionnaires are used. Data have been analyzed using exploratory factorial analysis.

Findings

Results regarding the dimensional structural framework of perceived value indicate that perceived value at the WHS of Quito has five factors: (1) monetary and non-monetary costs (MNC), (2) staff service quality (SSQ), (3) tourist offer accessibility (TOA), (4) destination attractiveness (DA) and (5) information accessibility (IA).

Originality/value

Two new factors of accessibility have been proposed in this study for measuring consumer value at a WHS. Perceived value and accessibility have been treated as two separate subjects in academic literature before. However, this article contributes to the understanding of perceived value at WHS, including factors linked to accessibility. Both managerial and theoretical implications for WHS are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Managing components' resources plays a critical role in the success of systems' architectures designed for cyber–physical systems (CPS). Performing the selection of candidate components to pursue a specific application's needs also involves identifying the relationships among architectural components, the network and the physical process, as the system characteristics and properties are related.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) approach is a valuable asset therefore. Within this context, the authors present the so-called Systems Architecture Ontology (SAO), which allows the representation of a system architecture (SA), as well as the relationships, characteristics and properties of a CPS application.

Findings

SAO uses a common vocabulary inspired by the Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) standard. To demonstrate SAO's applicability, this paper presents its use as an MDE approach combined with ontology-based modeling through the Ontology Web Language (OWL). From OWL models based on SAO, the authors propose a model transformation tool to extract data related to architectural modeling in AADL code, allowing the creation of a components' library and a property set model. Besides saving design time by automatically generating many lines of code, such code is less error-prone, that is, without inconsistencies.

Originality/value

To illustrate the proposal, the authors present a case study in the aerospace domain with the application of SAO and its transformation tool. As result, a library containing 74 components and a related set of properties are automatically generated to support architectural design and evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose

Police were key to enforcing and managing COVID-19 emergency orders, but many police services were not prepared for such an emergency. In Ontario, Canada, each service was responsible for crafting its own procedures for responding to the pandemic. This study synthesizes changes documented by Ontario-based services.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a qualitative thematic analysis of COVID-19-related documents (e.g. emails, guides and recommendations, orders, directives, policies and procedures, questionnaires and checklists and strategic plans) produced by 14 municipal police services across Ontario, Canada.

Findings

The documents reveal ways that police services were affected by the pandemic. These changes are organized into four themes: intra-organizational changes, officer wellness, inter-agency coordination and collaboration and community-police relations.

Originality/value

The study works with data from multiple police services to document the range of ways that policing changed to adapt to the pandemic. Understanding how police services navigated the pandemic facilitates preparedness for future civil emergencies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the key attributes of esports venues as perceived by spectators. Using the stimulus-organism-response framework, it also examines how these attributes influence customer experience, satisfaction and re-attendance intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

This mixed-methods research comprises two main stages. In the qualitative stage (Stage 1), we conducted a literature review, interviews with live esports event attendees and observations at two esports events to identify key esports venue attributes from spectators’ perspectives. In the quantitative stage (Stage 2), we recruited 564 esports game attendees at two live events to validate a measurement scale developed from the qualitative procedures. We also examined the relationships between venue attributes and the three spectator outcomes by using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Five key perspectives of esports venue attributes emerged from the qualitative analysis: (1) stage and stage lighting, (2) Internet infrastructure, (3) visibility of display screens, (4) concourse layout and (5) seating comfort. These dimensions were validated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and were found to directly influence spectator experience and satisfaction, but not re-attendance intentions.

Originality/value

This study provides pioneering insights into the specific esports venue attributes that drive spectator outcomes. The findings offer valuable directions for future esports research and practical strategies for esports venue management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the significance and implementation priorities for Digital Product Passports (DPP) in the context of building renovation projects. It aims to reveal bottlenecks and how a data-driven workflow bridges the DPP understanding/implementation gap, facilitating the transition towards practices aligned with the EU Green Deal goals.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-methods embedded design was employed for a real-case study exploration. Desk research and field observations ground the two-level analysis combining project documentation, namely the Bill of Quantities (BoQ), with different criteria in digitalisation and sustainability, such as economic ratio, 3D modelling, waste management, hazards, energy performance and facility management. All results were interpreted from the DPP lens.

Findings

The analysis revealed a system for identifying building products representing a significant part of the renovation budget. About 11 priority DPPs were found. Some are crucial for both the deconstruction and construction phases, highlighting the need for an incremental and strategic approach to DPP implementation.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to a single case study. Constraints are minimised given the sample's archetype representativeness. The outcomes introduce the need for strategic thinking for incremental DPP implementation. Future research will explore additional criteria and cases.

Originality/value

The research has resulted in a classification framework for DPPs' significance and priority, which is provided with case results. The outcome of the framework provides views on concept alignment to make the implementation in construction more straightforward. Its practical use can be replicated in other projects, emphasizing the importance of data structure and management for the circular economy.
