Abstract
Purpose
Strengths-based professional development has been associated with positive outcomes in academia and in the organizational workplace. Students pursuing their doctoral degrees in the biomedical sciences in the US are often on graduate assistantships, where they experience an academic component to their training integrated with an employee-like existence. The individual who serves as their academic and research advisor is often their supervisor, who pays their stipend. The traditional training structure poses unique challenges and may be accompanied by stress, burnout and imposter phenomenon. The purpose of this study is to utilize a strengths-based approach to equip students with essential personal and professional skills that build self-awareness and self-confidence further preparing them for their future in the scientific workforce.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors developed and implemented a novel strengths-based professional development cohort program for doctoral students in the biomedical sciences at a research-intensive (R1) institution. The program was designed to create a supportive and inclusive space for participants (n = 18) to explore their identity as a student and scientists and to develop and leverage their talents for more effective and strategic use. Program outcomes were evaluated through a mixed methods case study design using a post-program Likert-based survey (n = 10 participants) and participant interviews (n = 13). Explanatory sequential design was used in the interpretation of the findings.
Findings
The results show that the program had a positive impact on students’ perceptions of themselves as scientists, as well as on their self-efficacy, self-confidence and interpersonal interactions in the research setting.
Practical implications
This strengths-based professional development program demonstrates immense potential as a model to equip students with self-awareness and a new foundation of essential skills needed to supplement their technical and scientific training for their future careers in the team-based workplace.
Originality/value
This study demonstrates how professional development programming can complement scientific training by equipping students with self-awareness and other lifelong skills to navigate feelings of imposter phenomenon and interpersonal relationships in the team-based workplace.

Abstract
Purpose
This conceptual work examines how, in times of post-COVID-19 paradigm shift, the employee performance management (PM) process can help multinational corporations (MNCs) strengthen their talent management and, at the same time, meet their future needs.
Design/methodology/approach
We take a conceptual approach and present our perspective on what we see as the most critical trends shaping PM and talent management. Contingency theory and Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) theory provide a sound theoretical framework for understanding and responding to the complex and rapidly changing business context post-COVID-19.
Findings
Drawing on these theories, we create a framework providing a means of understanding why and how MNCs can maintain talent and, at the same time, develop new talent through the PM process.
Practical implications
Importantly, our study emphasizes the critical role that project management and talent management techniques play for both practitioners and scholars. In order to gain and sustain a competitive edge in the ever-changing VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) landscape, these processes necessitate ongoing reassessment and adaptation. As Plato eloquently stated, “Our Need Will Be the Real Creator,” encapsulating our vision for the proactive and dynamic nature of effective project management and talent management practices.
Originality/value
The study establishes the benefits of an agile and flexible PM approach to help develop talent and pave the way for future research in this increasingly critical area

Abstract
Purpose
Many principles and paradigms that influenced the labour system before the COVID-19 pandemic have changed, and the academic and corporate communities are struggling to make sense of the paradigm shifts the authors have entered. One of the organisational phenomena highlighted after the COVID-19 pandemic is “Quiet quitting”, that is, the tendency for workers to do the bare minimum tasks necessary for their occupations to avoid getting dismissed. This phenomenon may substantially impact both organisations and workers. As a result, academic interest in “Quiet quitting” has recently proliferated. Upon using leader-member exchange, organisational support and social exchange theories, this paper aims to propose and validate a scale measuring the new construct, “Quiet Quitting”.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of 1,430 valid questionnaires from individuals working in different industries, organisations and regions in the USA were examined using normality and Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin tests, as well as factor, reliability and nomological validity analyses.
Findings
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and reliability and nomological validity evaluations validate the proposed “Quiet Quitting” scale.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the proposed and validated “Quiet Quitting” scale is original. Since this scale may help to examine crucial management-worker dynamics in organisations, it may be subsequently developed and used by researchers in future studies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of training and development and work–life balance on employee engagement and job performance at private banks in Bangladesh. This study also investigates the indirect influence of training and development and work–life balance on the job performance of private banks through the mediating role of employee engagement.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study used a self-administered survey questionnaire to collect data from the private bank staff who had been working in the existing bank for more than one year. In this study, 450 survey questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and received 346 useful responses (76.88% response rate). The SmartPLS 4 software was used to determine the reliability and validity of the constructs. The SmartPLS 4 software was also used to test the hypothesised path coefficients via Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM).
Findings
The findings of the study indicate that both training and development and work–life balance significantly influence employee engagement and job performance in the private banks. The findings also indicate that both training and development and work–life balance indirectly significantly influence the job performance of the private bank through the mediating role of employee engagement.
Practical implications
This study suggests various practical implications. Managers should provide opportunities for employees to actively participate in employee training. The present study also suggests that managers should also prioritise and model a healthy work–life balance because when leaders value work–life balance, employees feel empowered. The findings of the study suggest that organisations should design effective employee development programmes and foster a supportive work environment to motivate their employees to contribute to organisational success.
Originality/value
This study makes significant theoretical contributions to the existing literature on employee engagement and job performance. The present study enhances theoretical depth by highlighting the mediating role of job engagement in achieving job performance, offering a new perspective on the relationship between these variables and paving the way for targeted interventions. The present study also enriches the existing body of literature by examining the impact of training and development and work–life balance through the lens of organisational support theory, presenting a comprehensive understanding of the intricate dynamics at play.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the mechanisms by which employees’ happiness at work (HAW) can be promoted. Drawing on the social exchange theory (SET), this study examined the relationships among discretionary human resource (HR) practices, perceived organizational support (POS), meaning of work (MOW) and HAW.
Design/methodology/approach
A three-path mediation model was developed to test the proposed relationships. The data were collected from Pakistani business professionals (n = 361), and hypotheses were tested using the PROCESS macro for SPSS .
Findings
The results suggest that POS mediates the relationship between discretionary HR practices and HAW. Also, MOW mediated the relationship between discretionary HR practices and HAW. Hence, both POS and MOW were found to be independent mediators. Further, the data provided support for the serial mediation of POS and MOW in the relationship between discretionary HR practices and HAW.
Practical implications
This research provides insights to organizations and their management on how discretionary HR practices can enhance employees’ POS, MOW and HAW.
Originality/value
The findings show that discretionary HR practices are associated with employees’ HAW. In addition, two mediators (POS and MOW) were found to serially mediate the aforesaid relationships. These findings are novel, as no prior research has used this nascent methodological approach to deepen our understanding by examining the associations between discretionary HR practices, POS, MOW and employees’ HAW.
