Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to provide empirical evidence regarding Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practices supported by Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies in heavy vehicle manufacturing processes.
Design/methodology/approach
A two-case study was performed involving LSS specialists, leaders and managers of two heavy vehicle manufacturers in Brazil. The data analysis procedure combined content analysis techniques, conceptual maps and network analysis.
Findings
The results provide consistent evidence of synergies between LSS and I4.0, including digital mistake-proofing, digital andon, e-kanban, statistical monitoring as well as process mapping aided by cyber-physical systems (CPS) and big data analytics (BDA). To enable such interactions, companies need to invest in automation architectures, system integration, human–machine interfaces and analytical skills.
Research limitations/implications
This study relies on data from a two-case study carried out in two companies from a single manufacturing sector in Brazil. For this reason, the findings cannot be generalized to the entire automotive industry.
Originality/value
There is still a lack of comprehensive research on the application of digital technologies in LSS practices. This is the first study which provides empirical evidence regarding the LSS practices supported by I4.0 technologies used by heavy vehicle manufacturers.

Abstract
Purpose
Motivated by the ongoing debate around transparency in empirical research and the reproducibility of scientific discoveries, this study aims to quantify the presence or absence of evidential value in published findings within the field of servitization research. Specifically, it evaluated whether the findings of published articles on the relationship between servitization and firm performance were free from p-hacking and selective reporting practices.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 76 studied on this relationship were synthesized. For the main p-curve analysis, only one significant p-value was extracted from each article, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the p-curve method. Specifically, the analyzed p-values were independent of one another and exhibited a uniform distribution.
Findings
Both the main p-curve analysis results and robustness tests support the conclusion that this branch of the literature does have evidential value based on the published findings. Furthermore, approximately 60 studies included in the main p-curve analysis reported a significance level of p < 0.025 regarding the relationship between servitization and firm performance.
Originality/value
This research contributes to the ongoing debate on transparency in servitization research and advances the current understanding of the relationship between servitization and firm performance.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this article is to analyze the integration between the internal functions related to demand and supply processes. The studied object was an agribusiness company that uses digital technologies to operate its inbound logistics.
Design/methodology/approach
A case study was conducted in a global agribusiness company that went through a restructuring process with the implementation of a shared service center. In-depth interviews were conducted with employees from the demand and supply areas. The analysis involved description of cross-functional integration processes from the areas of demand and supply, the identification of technologies from Industry 4.0 present in the activities of those areas and their role in the integration process.
Findings
The analysis revealed the mediating role of technology in cross-functional integration, the presence of new integration factors and their impact on process performance. A framework was developed that describes the relationship between technology and integration factors, their impacts, and the implications for theory and practice.
Practical implications
Regarding this study, the focal company migrated its activities, which were previously isolated and dispersed across branches, to a centralized shared services unit. This research contributes by providing managers with elements to support their investment decisions in technologies that facilitate the integration process, mainly in the areas of planning and execution. It also contributes to the planning of processes, helping managers who are implementing or migrating activities and areas to new management structures.
Originality/value
This paper brings two new assumptions that may guide future investigations about cross-functional integration and its effects on demand and supply integration (DSI): (1) Digital technologies are able to support cross-functional integration in order to provide information integrity, team alignment, agile and assertive decision making within supply and demand processes; (2) Cross-functional integration, mediated by digital technologies, can generate agility and accuracy of information in the demand and supply processes. This accuracy and agility provide improvements in demand and supply process performance metrics, such as predictability, assertiveness, standardization, productivity and response time.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to implement Lean and Green principles within the agribusiness sector, focusing specifically on employing Environmentally Sustainable Value Stream Mapping (Sus-VSM) to assess critical indicators for both present and future states of an orange farm. The objective is to enhance value while simultaneously mitigating environmental impacts.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing a mixed-method research design, this study integrates both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. It adapts Sus-VSM and introduces inventory analysis frameworks for application within the agricultural domain, conducting a case study on an orange farm located in Sergipe, Brazil. This research seeks to provide actionable insights into the application of Lean and Green principles in agribusiness and introduces the Overall Lean-Green Effectiveness (OLGE) as an innovative decision-making tool for managers.
Findings
The study underscores the efficacy of Sus-VSM in the agricultural sector, albeit noting the necessity for certain process modifications to ensure successful implementation. Upon comparison of the two states, it is observed that the current state incurs 70.55% higher impacts on climate change (0.47 tCO2eq./ha), whereas the future state could yield a 4.08% increase in aggregated value. Improvements from the current to the future scenario can primarily be achieved through enhanced management of in-field inventory of inputs, given that OLGE in this case study is significantly influenced by efficient inventory management.
Originality/value
The adaptation of VSM for agricultural operations, coupled with the integration of environmental sustainability indicators, represents an innovative strategy for enhancing agricultural processes while minimizing environmental impacts. The proposition of a new Lean and Green indicator, the OLGE, aims to facilitate the interpretation of results and guide improvements.

Abstract
Purpose
The present study aims to identify the resources and capabilities that enable logistics service providers (LSPs) to create sustainable value through Logistics 4.0.
Design/methodology/approach
A multiple case study was conducted with five LSPs operating in an emerging market context. Data were analyzed using the content analysis technique with the support of NVivo software.
Findings
Drawing on the resource-based view theory, the study elucidates the resources and capabilities necessary for the successful adoption of Logistics 4.0 by LSPs. The findings highlight the significance of integrating Logistics 4.0 technological resources with other organizational assets, including human capital, an innovative culture, leadership and strategic partnerships. This integration can enable companies to optimize the sustainable value derived from their digital transformation initiatives.
Research limitations/implications
The present research focused on LSPs, potentially overlooking insights that could be gained from other segments of the supply chain. The study paves the way for future studies to examine resources and capabilities in a range of other supply chain management functions.
Originality/value
The study offers unique theoretical and practical insights by identifying key resources for the adoption of Logistics 4.0 among LSPs, emphasizing its potential for sustainable value creation. It highlights the environmental, economic and societal impacts of 4.0 technologies, outlining the implications for policymakers to drive the successful adoption of Logistics 4.0 in emerging markets while also promoting social inclusion and professional development of logistics workers.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of measuring a sample of engineering students’ perceived achievement of complex thinking at different stages of their professional training. This study intended to analyze and predict the differences in the self-perception of achieved complex thinking competency by gender, semester, course of study and high school of origin.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology included applying the E-Complexity instrument to 225 university students from northern Mexico. The initial comparison of groups used the chi-square test and two supervised learning algorithms (logit regression with Lasso regularization and a classification tree).
Findings
The findings of this study indicated that the selected undergraduate degree did not reveal differences in self-perceived performance in complex thinking, while gender, semester and high school of origin had significant differences.
Research limitations/implications
Among the limitations of the study is the size of the sample and the fact that it only focused on engineering students from a single educational institution; however, this limitation responds to the exploratory nature of this study and the guidance of the institutional ethics committee. With these results, it is feasible to request an extension of the sample to include other disciplines to evaluate these findings, which, although relevant, cannot be considered exhaustive.
Originality/value
Regarding possible lines of research, the authors propose that given the difference between students who graduated from the high school of the same institution and those who did not, a possible line of research could explore new hypotheses on whether the policies and practices of the institution’s high school emphasize the development of complex thinking skills; the teachers of this high school are trained to teach complex thinking; and the learning materials of this high school are designed to develop complex thinking skills.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this research is twofold: (1) to investigate when the effect of R&D investment on New Product Development (NPD) performance peaks – the sweet spot and (2) to analyze the influence of firms’ export activities on where that spot is. Drawing on the knowledge-based view (KBV), we argue that export intensity and export experience lead to differential effects on how R&D investments are converted into new products.
Design/methodology/approach
We test our conceptual framework using time lagged data and optimal-level analysis. The dataset consists of an unbalanced panel of 608,891 observations and 333,516 firms.
Findings
The results support the expected inverted U-shaped relationship between R&D investment and NPD performance. They also show moderating effects of export intensity and experience. Export intensity enhances innovation processes by enabling firms to stretch the points at which R&D investments eventually taper off. In contrast, export experience improves firms’ ability to convert R&D investments into NPD performance. Our results demonstrate that, all else equal, firms with relatively higher export experience can spend less on R&D and still achieve higher levels of NPD performance.
Originality/value
We contribute to the literature by investigating how export activities provide a valuable context for understanding the theoretical mechanisms that help explain the inverted U-shaped relationship between R&D investment and innovation. We show the effects of exporting activities on the precise points where the R&D investment–NPD performance relationship peaks, thereby identifying the optimal point within this nonlinear relationship.

Abstract
Purpose
This article sheds light on the missing links concerning the study of using integrated enabling technologies toward sustainable and circular agriculture supply chains by examining the available literature and proposing future research possibilities.
Design/methodology/approach
The relevant literature was researched through online databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Academic Search Premier, Emerald, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, World Scientific Net and Springer-Link Journals, covering a period from 1999 to 2020. A systematic literature review based on 75 papers analyzed the integration of the concepts of enabling technologies, sustainability, circular economy and supply chain performance in agriculture supply chains.
Findings
It was identified that enabling technologies and agriculture supply chains alone have been explored further than integrated enabling technologies, sustainability, circular economy, supply chain performance and agriculture supply chains. Enabling technologies and agriculture supply chains' main findings are: enabling technologies have been studied to improve food safety, food quality and traceability in agriculture supply chains. The main results regarding integrated enabling technologies, sustainability, circular economy, supply chain performance and agriculture supply chains are: Internet of Things and information communication technology play an important role in addressing food security, traceability and food quality, which help achieve sustainable development goals.
Originality/value
This review study provides 13 research questions to underpin future trends regarding integrated technologies' application in agriculture supply chains for circular and sustainable growth.

Abstract
Purpose
The study aims to explore the relationship between the SDGs and the environmental and social impacts of university classes. It evaluates the potential contributions of different teaching models to the SDGs, providing insights into sustainable teaching systems.
Findings
In-person classes exhibited hotspots in transportation and energy consumption. Scenarios I and II, involving virtual and hybrid classes, increased eutrophication potential and water scarcity due to higher food consumption, negatively impacting SDGs. However, all scenarios showed positive contributions to SDGs 2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
Design/methodology/approach
This research integrates Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to assess the environmental and social impacts of classes at the Federal University of São Carlos, Sorocaba campus in Brazil. Three scenarios were analyzed: (I) virtual classes, (II) hybrid classes and (III) in-person classes with improved energy efficiency.
Research limitations/implications
The study primarily focuses on environmental and social impacts, excluding other factors like class quality. Integrating Life Cycle Costing and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment could provide a more holistic evaluation in the future.
Practical implications
The methodology adopted offers valuable insights for managing the impacts of university performance and aligning teaching systems with the SDGs. It enables institutions to make informed decisions for sustainability in education.
Social implications
The research emphasizes the importance of considering social impacts alongside environmental ones when assessing sustainability in educational institutions. It encourages universities to engage stakeholders in sustainability efforts.
Originality/value
This research innovatively combines LCA and the SDGs in the context of university education providing a replicable methodology for evaluating and enhancing sustainability in teaching systems and from a more quantitative perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
The Audit and Accounting Firms (AAF) companies are of great importance as they audit companies in different sectors and report on their economic-financial situation. The academic literature has analysed these firms but has not gone as far as to review their economic and financial health. Therefore, this study aims to focus on the analysis of whether these companies are viable companies beyond the large firms, whether they generate profits from their activity or whether they tend to go bankrupt. In addition, the impact of COVID-19 has been studied, since it is questionable whether the effect on AAF has been negative or positive.
Design/methodology/approach
In order to answer the hypotheses put forward in this study, analysis of the profitability, liquidity and solvency situation of AAF considering their size and age, as well as the impact of the pandemic on this sector has been done. In total, 12,469 European companies are analysed. After the descriptive analysis of the companies by ratios, the Altman Z-score model is used as a methodology to assess whether they are bankruptcy-prone companies based on their characteristics.
Findings
The results of the analysis of the study have shown that these are companies of great importance to the European economy and that, depending on their characteristics, there are companies that may be closer to the risk of bankruptcy. This study is an essential contribution to the academic literature, public administration and the management of auditing and accounting firms.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to analyse AAF at the European level with a panel data sample. The results obtained can be generalized and form the basis for future lines of research.
