Abstract
Purpose
This study systematically reviews the existing literature on the application of gamification in logistics and supply chain management (LSCM). This study aims to categorise the literature in various logistics and supply chain domains, to conceptualise the gamification framework pertinent in the context of LSCM and to provide a research agenda for scholars in the area.
Design/methodology/approach
The study’s methodology adopts the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis framework to conduct a systematic literature review. Forty relevant papers published from 2012 to 2023 are included in the analysis.
Findings
Augmented reality, blockchain, education, sustainability and warehousing have been identified as the key focus areas in which gamification is applied. Furthermore, the paper highlights different research approaches used to study these domains, maps the literature with gamification constructs (affordances, psychological outcomes and behavioural outcomes) and provides potential research avenues for future scholars.
Research limitations/implications
This review offers evidence of the impact of gamification on workforce dynamics, employee motivation, job satisfaction, trust, employee engagement and productivity. The study significantly contributes to the academic community by offering a conceptual framework and meaningful avenues for future researchers.
Originality/value
This research work contributes to the gamification, logistics and supply chain literature by providing a more comprehensive and methodical knowledge of the field. This study adds to the body of knowledge by offering a reference framework for future scholars based on a synthesis of the studies published so far in the area.

Abstract
Purpose
A fragmented research field exists on the applications of disruptive technologies like blockchain in supply chain management. Thus, the purpose of this study is to present a systematic review of literature reviews, summarising the applications of blockchain in various kinds and facets of the supply chain to date.
Design/methodology/approach
The literature search was conducted using Scopus and Web Of Science databases, and reporting was performed using PRISMA guidelines. In total, 43 review papers were identified, and 15 reviews applicable to the study were synthesised.
Findings
Blockchain technology is still in its infancy; however, it is gaining high utility in supply chain management. The technology is constantly expanding its application base, and it has enormous potential to cut out intermediaries and improve the efficiency of supply chains. Taking a look at the past and the present, the current study explores unexplored research avenues for the future.
Research limitations/implications
This study provides key insights to academia interested in exploring and advancing the topic.
Practical implications
This study will benefit practitioners and business managers exercising the potential of such a technology in various industrial contexts.
Social implications
The outcome of this study has the potential to bring many benefits to society at large. These benefits, if fully realised, could positively impact the society.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first broad systematic review of reviews analysing the information about blockchain applications and implementation in the supply chain. Based on its constructive overview of the review studies published to date, this study contributes to the supply chain management literature by providing a table of reference for future researchers.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of artificial intelligence (AI) in the talent management sphere. The study seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge with respect to human resource management and AI by conducting a literature review on the integration of AI in talent management, synthesising existing approaches and frameworks, as well as emphasising potential benefits.
Design/methodology/approach
The study adopts desk research, computational literature review (CLR) and uses topic modelling [with bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERTopic)] to throw light on the diffusion of AI in talent management.
Findings
The study’s main finding is that the area of AI in talent management is on the verge of gradual development and is in tandem with the growth of AI. We deduced that there is a link between talent management practices (planning, recruitment, compensation and rewards, performance management, employee empowerment, employee engagement and organisational culture) and AI. Though there are some known fears with regards to using the innovation, the benefits outweigh the demerits.
Research limitations/implications
The current study has some limitations. The scope and size of the sample are the primary limitations of this study. No form of qualitative analytics was used in this study; as a result, the information obtained was limited. The study provides a snapshot of AI in talent management and contributes to the lack of literature in the joint fields. Also, the study provides practitioners and experts an overview of where to target investments and resources if need be.
Originality/value
The originality of this study comes from the combination of CLR methods and the use topic modelling with BERTopic which has not been used by previous reviews. In addition, the salient machine learning algorithms are identified in the study, which other studies have not identified.

Abstract
Purpose
Artificial intelligence (AI)-based human capital management (HCM) software solutions represent a potentially effective way to leverage and streamline a bank’s human resources. However, despite the attractiveness of AI-based HCM solutions to improve banks’ effectiveness, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no current studies that identify critical success factors (CSFs) for adopting AI-based HCM in the banking sector. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating CSFs for adopting AI-based HCM software solutions in the banking sector.
Design/methodology/approach
Full consistency method methodology and technology–organization–environment, economic and human framework are used for categorizing and ranking CSFs.
Findings
The study identifies the technological and environmental dimensions as the most and least important dimensions for AI-based HCM adoption in banks. Among specific CSFs, compatible technology facilities, sufficient privacy and security and relative advantages of technology over competing technologies were identified as the most important. Implementation of AI-based HCM solutions requires significant outlays of resources, both human and financial, for banks.
Originality/value
The study provides bank administrators a set of objective parameters and criterion to evaluate the feasibility of adopting a particular AI-based HCM solution in banks.

Abstract
Purpose
Authors analyze a business model (BM) based on organizational performance. BMs are strategic tools used to achieve high performance. This study is based on two characteristics of causal complexity: conjunction and equifinality. Authors also examine the applicability of causal asymmetry in the relationship between BMs and organizational performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Generally, the relationship between BM elements and organizational performance is analyzed using a correlational approach. This relationship is marked by causal complexity, which cannot be analyzed via such approach. Authors applied a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis with data from three time-periods and two performance variables for pharmaceutical firms.
Findings
Qualitative comparative analysis revealed that high performance resulted from configurations (combinations) of BM elements and not from the effects of individual elements. In addition, multiple configurations are available for achieving high performance. Causal asymmetry was observed in the configuration of the BM elements for high and low performances.
Research limitations/implications
Using qualitative comparative analysis of data sets from three time-periods in the context of the pharmaceutical industry BM, authors integrated the theoretical constructs of causal complexity, namely conjunction, equifinality and causal asymmetry.
Practical implications
Findings related to conjunctions will help managers shift their focus from individual BM elements to combinations of BM elements. Additionally, the findings related to equifinality and causal asymmetry will allow flexibility in designing their company’s BM according to the resource constraints their company faces.
Originality/value
This was one of the first few studies on BMs using the twin indicators of the organizational performance relationship and causal complexity.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of inflated energy prices on the capital structure of Indian manufacturing corporations and to investigate whether the capital structure of Indian firms is driven by demand shocks or supply shocks during the study period.
Design/methodology/approach
After conducting a thorough review of the capital structure and inflation-based research studies, panel data-based regression model and correlation matrix have been used as statistical tools for Indian manufacturing sector available with the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Prowess database.
Findings
The results suggest that variables like the presence of inflated energy prices had adversely influenced the capital structure of Indian corporations. Not only this, the study also highlights that factors pertaining to the demand shock had induced Indian corporations to have higher debt levels in the capital structure.
Practical implications
This study has laid some ground work to explore the influence of inflation on capital structure of Indian firms upon which a more detailed evaluation could be based.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first that explores the influence of inflated energy prices on the capital structure of manufacturing firms in India by using the most recent data.

Abstract
Purpose
Gourd fibres (GF) are a natural biodegradable fibre material with excellent mechanical properties and high tensile strength. The use of natural fibres in composite materials has gained popularity in recent years due to their various advantages, including renewability, low cost, low density and biodegradability. Gourd fibre is one such natural fibre that has been identified as a potential reinforcement material for composites. However, it has low surface energy and hydrophobic nature, which makes it difficult to bond with matrix materials such as polyester. To overcome this problem, chemically adapted gourd fibre has been proposed as a solution. Chemical treatment is one of the most widely used methods to improve the properties of natural fibres. This research evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating chemically adapted gourd fibre into polyester composites for industrial fabrication. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of chemically modified GF in the production of polyester composite engineering materials.
Design/methodology/approach
This work aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chemically adapted gourd fibre in improving the adhesion of gourd fibre with polyester resin in composite fabrication by varying the GF from 5 to 20 wt.%. The study involves the preparation of chemically treated gourd fibre through surface modification using sodium hydroxide (NaOH), permanganate (KMnO4) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) coupling agents. The mechanical properties of the modified fibre and composites were investigated. It was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine the changes in surface morphology and functional groups.
Findings
FTIR characterization showed that NaOH treatment caused cellulose depolymerization and caused a significant increase in the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, showing improved surface functional groups; KMnO4 treatment oxidized the fibre surface and caused the formation of surface oxide groups; and acetic acid treatment induced changes that primarily affected the ester and hydroxyl groups. SEM study showed that NaOH treatment changed the surface morphology of the gourd fibre, introduced voids and reduced hydrophilic tendencies. The tensile strength of the modified gourd fibres increased progressively as the concentration of the modification chemicals increased compared to the untreated fibres.
Originality/value
This work presents the designed composite with density, mechanical properties and microstructure, showing remarkable improvements in the engineering properties. An 181.5% improvement in tensile strength and a 56.63% increase in flexural strength were got over that of the unreinforced polyester. The findings from this work will contribute to the understanding of the potential of chemically adapted gourd fibre as a reinforcement material for composites and provide insights into the development of sustainable composite materials.
