Abstract

Purpose

The objective of the research is to examine the impact of global governance and macroeconomic indicators on the lending capacity of banks in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing a comprehensive time series dataset spanning from 1996 to 2022, we utilize the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag model approach to investigate the short-run and long-run impact of government policy (GP) effectiveness, lending interest rates and remittance inflows (RI) on the lending capacity of banks in India.

Findings

The findings of the study indicate that lending interest rates have a statistically insignificant impact on lending capacity in the short term. However, in the long run, an increase in the lending interest rate leads to a decrease in lending capacity, whereas a decrease in the lending interest rate has a non-significant impact. On the other hand, the effectiveness of GPs affects both short-term and long-term lending capacity. In the short run, positive or negative changes in GP effectiveness lead to a decline in lending capacity. Whereas in the long run, a positive shock in GP effectiveness increases lending capacity, while a negative shock decreases it. Lastly, RI indicated no significant short-term impact on the lending capacity of the banks. Conversely, in the long run, a positive change in RI enhances lending capacity, whereas a negative change in RI reduces it, with a more pronounced effect.

Originality/value

The novelty of the study lies in the fact that it is a pioneering study that utilizes global governance and macroeconomic indicators to examine the impact on the lending capacity of banks and financial institutions in India. Moreover, the study adopts a non-linear approach to examine the relationship between the chosen variables, which enables an understanding of the impact of both positive and negative shocks on the dependent variable both in the short and long run. Lastly, the examination sheds light on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 8.10, which is related to financial inclusion and it is a major concern for a large developing nation like India.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore how Indonesian males who are entrepreneurs in make-up artists navigate their businesses in a society that relies on hegemonic masculinity. This goal is reached by concentrating on male make-up artist entrepreneurs in five Indonesian provinces and investigating how they actively rewrite their gender and inherent vocations by societal norms.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts a qualitative phenomenological approach with methods. In-depth interviews and observations were conducted with 28 informants in five provinces of Indonesia.

Findings

These findings show that, aside from self-concept, family support is the most crucial determining factor that pushes men make-up artists to become businesses in the face of so many rejections. Persistence in battling for their fate is also critical in efforts to erase themselves, who are constantly subjected to hegemonic masculinity. Aside from that, it appears that the government's role in attempts to promote gender equality in all fields of business in Indonesia remains limited.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the gender and entrepreneurship literature by providing a broader exploration of male entrepreneurs working in the field of female make-up artists in a society that still adheres to hegemonic masculinity.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary objective of this investigation is to explore the factors that lead to entrepreneurial re-entry. The study examines the influence of social support and resilience on re-entry intention through the lens of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

To test the study model, data were collected from 255 failed Omani entrepreneurs accessed during a rehabilitation and incubation programme.

Findings

Key findings indicate that social support boosts the confidence of failed entrepreneurs to start anew and enhances their resilience, ultimately leading to the development of re-entry intentions.

Originality/value

The field of entrepreneurship research has expanded significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, there remains a dearth of studies focusing on entrepreneurial re-entry. This research provides a unique perspective on the cognitive processes that influence re-entry entrepreneurial behaviour, highlighting the roles of social support and resilience among entrepreneurs in this process.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the critical importance of digital transformation in enhancing industrial growth and competitiveness, especially in heavy construction, this study introduces a tailored capability assessment model and self-appraisal tool for firms in this sector. These resources enable them to gauge their readiness for adopting digital technology effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing the Technology—Organization—Environment (TOE) and Natural Resource Dependence Theory (NRDT) frameworks, 22 markers were identified to structure a questionnaire distributed to construction professionals. Descriptive analysis and fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE) were used to develop the capability assessment model. A validation survey assessed the validity of both the model and the self-appraisal instrument.

Findings

The study identified the top five significant markers: (1) leadership commitment to digital transformation, (2) workforce readiness for technology integration, (3) potential ROI through efficiency gains, (4) technology maturity for construction applications and (5) complexity of integrating new technologies with existing workflows. Through FSE, the most critical factors were technology-related, organizational and resource optimization markers.

Originality/value

By employing the TOE and NRDT frameworks, the study identifies the most critical factors influencing digital adoption in heavy construction. Also, the user-friendly self-appraisal instrument developed in this study can be considered a valuable contribution, as it provides heavy construction firms with a practical tool for ongoing monitoring and improvement of their digital transformation efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, we evaluated university students’ attitudes towards environmental issues, with a particular focus on the cohort’s understanding of climate change and knowledge of environmental issues. We also explored whether students’ gender or university major (natural sciences vs humanities and social sciences) impact attitudes to environmental issues.

Design/methodology/approach

We surveyed undergraduate students (n = 1,310) using an online questionnaire comprising 17 statements that reflect attitudes towards environmental concerns. This questionnaire was constructed using a 5-point Likert Scale and was tested for reliability and validity to ensure its precision and consistency in assessing the targeted constructs.

Findings

The results revealed that the surveyed students had a medium level of positive attitudes towards the environment. While no significant differences based on gender were observed, students from different university majors significantly differed in the degree to which they endorsed positive attitudes towards the environment, with those majoring in natural sciences reporting stronger attitudes to environmental issues. These findings warrant the implementation of mandatory courses on the environment at UAE universities so as to enhance students’ awareness and foster positive attitudes towards the environment.

Originality/value

Unlike previous studies that may have focused narrowly on specific environmental attitudes or behaviors, this research offers a broad yet detailed assessment by incorporating factors such as students' academic majors and gender. By comparing attitudes across different fields of study—natural sciences versus humanities and social sciences, the study provides new insights into how educational background and demographic variables shape environmental perceptions. This approach allows for a more nuanced understanding of the factors that influence environmental attitudes among young adults, potentially guiding more targeted educational interventions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the integration of information technology (IT) competencies with organizational inclusion initiatives and its impact on firm performance. It examines the role of organizational inclusion in promoting knowledge management capability (KMC) and the moderating effect of approach and avoidance motivation on the relationship between KMC and operational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is grounded in the resource orchestration theory (ROT), which conceptualizes the integration of IT competencies and organizational inclusion. It employs hierarchical regression analysis on data collected from 204 firms and 374 managerial respondents to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicate that IT competencies enhance the relationship between organizational inclusion and KMC. Additionally, the relationship between KMC and operational performance is weaker when employees exhibit higher levels of avoidance motivation.

Practical implications

This study offers theoretical and managerial insights for integrating IT competencies into organizational inclusion initiatives, providing guidance for organizations seeking to enhance their performance, with a specific focus on the relevance of China as the research context.

Originality/value

This study enriches the scholarly discourse by examining the underexplored integration of IT competencies with organizational inclusion, notably in the context of China. It illuminates the moderating role of motivation in the KMC-operational performance relationship, benefiting both academia and practitioners. Furthermore, this work extends the literature by demonstrating how combining organizational inclusion and IT competencies can enhance workplace KMC, connecting it to internal knowledge resources. Theoretical implications extend beyond organizational inclusion and IT to show the broader application potential of ROT in management and information systems.
