Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to highlight the impact of big data on library services. This study highlights the required skills of librarians and the application of big data analytics.

Design/methodology/approach

An analysis of the literature was also used to identify the various applications implemented in library services across the globe.

Findings

This study’s findings reveal that the role of big data remained limited because of a lack of knowledge and skills. Big data’s significant challenges include inadequate technical support, untrained librarians and financial constraints to meet these requirements. This paper highlighted the challenges and remedial measures that can be taken while adopting this technology in library services.

Originality/value

This paper is significant for librarians, practitioners and stakeholders of the various organization who desire to implement this technology in their respective libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

As a part of doctoral study, this study aims to analyze research on library management models (LMMs) by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR).

Design/methodology/approach

A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Mata-Analysis approach was used to search four databases. The search criteria included studies published in English until 2022, resulting 9,125 records. Out of these records, a total of 36 studies were selected for final analysis

Findings

The results show a positive attitude among researchers toward the development of LMM for libraries globally. The results depict that more than one-third (39%) of the target population was comprised of academic staff and students. The majority (91.76%) of studies were conducted using survey. Quantitative methods were predominant (89%) for LMMs. There were a significant number of studies conducted in 2016. The country-wise distribution shows the USA and China each contribute (20%) of the studies.

Practical implications

The findings of this research could assist policymakers and authorities in reconciling the LMMs applied in libraries for providing efficient access to information resources and services to end users.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is unique as no comprehensive study has been conducted on LMMs using the SLR method.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to measure the current levels of awareness of communication skills among academic librarians in degree-awarding institutions of Pakistan and to identify barriers that libraries, with the support of organizational stakeholders, could target to enhance adoption and / or improvement of these skills.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative research design, based on a Web-based survey method, used a questionnaire as the data collection tool for librarians used in degree-awarding institutions in Pakistan. After incorporating feedback from experts in the field, the questionnaire link was shared with a sample population of n = 400 academic librarians in Pakistan, using simple random sampling. The data was coded in Microsoft Excel and exported to SPSS v 26 for analysis.

Findings

Overall, the findings underscore a consistent and moderate to high level of awareness by this cohort of basic library communication skills and their associated benefits. The level of agreement as to the principal barriers to these skills aligns with previous research results over the past decade and therefore underlines the need to prioritize the development of appropriate solutions.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is indicated to investigate the major factors contributing to the principal barriers identified in the current study.

Practical implications

The study recommends that librarians work with relevant stakeholders to identify strategies to enhance their personal and interpersonal communication skills and to address current barriers to upskilling.

Originality/value

The study could serve as a foundation for any future research and policy frameworks to enhance employability and communication skills among librarians in Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

This research paper is an attempt to conduct a rather detailed analysis of the legal approach to money laundering in the digital trade. Undoubtedly, the current research focus is one of the biggest issues of modern times, given the rapid growth of cryptocurrencies and online payment systems. The purpose of the study is to apply the currently available knowledge of the law and propose the respective legal strategies and regulatory responses.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative methodology is used in the study. It implies the review of the reviewed literature, analysis of different regulatory frameworks, and of different the case studies. The analysis of this material is used to provide an integrated understanding of the issue from a legal, economic and technological perspective. There are primary and secondary resources used to collect data.

Findings

The analysis identifies a number of key obstacles to the fight against money laundering in digital trade, including cryptocurrency anonymity, jurisdictional complications and regulatory fragmentation. Despite numerous technological advancements aimed at strengthening anti-money laundering (AML) regulations, persistent violations persist, hindering money laundering detection efforts in the digital commerce segment.

Research limitations/implications

The research is limited by its reliance on existing literature and case studies, which may not fully capture the most recent developments in AML regulation and technological advancements. Future research could benefit from empirical data and real-time analysis of regulatory implementations.

Originality/value

This research makes a significant contribution to the existing literature, combining many different perspectives to make the work better organized and insightful. The research analyzes the evolving regulatory landscape regarding money laundering in digital trade in detail, yielding highly valuable conclusions for policymakers, regulators and businesses in the industry. The best-practice recommendations provide the best solutions to the problem of increasing financial crimes in digital trade, which have challenged the development of the sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of entrepreneurial education (EE), financial support (FS) and role models (RMs) on one’s attitude towards entrepreneurship (ATE) and on entrepreneurial intention (EI) based on the theory of planned behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, quantitative research design, a deductive approach and purposive sampling have been used to collect data from 352 individuals from various Malaysian higher education institutions. The data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling.

Findings

The findings have provided interesting insights into how EE, FS and RMs have a significant impact on one’s ATE and their EI. Surprisingly, RMs did not emerge as a significant predictor of EI. However, it is worth noting that mediating relationships were of significance, indicating that one’s ATE plays a substantial mediating role between EE, FS, RMs and EIs.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the few that investigate the relationships between RMs, FS and EE in relation to enhancing EIs through the mediating role of one’s ATE in Malaysia. Based on the findings of this study, stakeholders in Malaysia’s education sector are being urged to develop policy guidelines for the designing and teaching of entrepreneurship education as well as to develop FS mechanisms for business start-ups. They are also being encouraged to expose students to entrepreneurial RMs to improve their ATE and their EIs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the roles of retail experience quality dimensions, customers’ in-shop emotion valence and in-shop involvement valence in shaping the holistic retail customer experience.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a total of 25 interviews with customers who have used services at non-fuel retail stores in Malaysia, commonly known as tuckshops, which are located adjacent to fuel stations. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, which led to the identification of key themes and categories that informed the development of our conceptual framework.

Findings

This study identifies three dimensions of retail experience quality: physical surroundings experience quality, interaction experience quality and service innovation experience quality. These dimensions, which were previously unexamined, are shown to influence customer evaluations based on their interactions with the retail environment, employees and digital applications. Additionally, the study finds that these dimensions impact customers’ emotions and involvement valence, suggesting that even with negative experiences, high involvement and overall positive perceptions can still occur.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the literature in several ways. First, it identifies key retail antecedents that shape how customers interact with, interpret and evaluate the quality of their retail experiences. Second, it examines the complex nature of customers’ in-store emotions and involvement valence, highlighting the coexistence of positive and negative emotions in certain retail contexts. Third, the study offers practical insights for retail firms, urging them to adopt a holistic approach in addressing customer emotions and involvement across diverse retail service channels.

Originality/value

The study introduces new dimensions of retail experience quality and develops a framework linking these dimensions to customer emotions and involvement valence. Unlike previous research that has focused on either positive or negative aspects in isolation, this study offers a comprehensive view of how mixed emotions and involvement can impact the overall retail experience. It provides both theoretical insights and practical guidance for creating more balanced and engaging retail experiences.

Abstract

Purpose

Hedonic shopping is a growing phenomenon designed to enhance gamers’ virtual content shopping experience with increasing economic significance, yet limited attention has been dedicated to this area. Our study explores key hedonic motivations of virtual content shopping and how hedonic shopping value builds trust (trust in virtual content and trust in virtual retailers) that enhances the intention to pay for premium.

Design/methodology/approach

This research adopts a mixed-methods approach. Study 1 is qualitative; 19 semi-structured interviews were conducted with virtual game retail platform users. Study 2, based on the literature review and qualitative inquiry findings (obtained from Study 1), proposes a research model empirically validated by analyzing survey data administered to 437 online gamers from gaming zones, cybercafés and e-sports centers.

Findings

The results show that in-game shopping-related adventure-, gratification-, role- and idea-seeking motivations significantly influence gamers' perceived hedonic shopping value. In turn, perceived shopping value has a significant indirect effect through trust on gamers’ intention to pay for premium.

Originality/value

This research contributes to gaming literature by offering a comprehensive model that elucidates the role of hedonic shopping in increasing gamers’ trust, which explains purchase behavior in the virtual game retail context. The findings deepen the understanding of the game retailing landscape and offer strategies to build gamers’ trust, increase premium usage and retain existing spenders.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate and compare the impact of foreign and domestic institutional investors on the market value of family and non-family companies. Subsequently, it examines how different degrees of family ownership influence foreign and domestic institutional investors and their value impacts.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of this study includes 339 non-financial firms from NIFTY-500 for 11 years from 2011 to 2020, which contains 128 family and 211 non-family companies. Both static (fixed-effect model) and dynamic (two-step system generalized method of moments) models are employed to test the hypotheses.

Findings

Findings suggest that foreign institutional investors outshine domestic institutions regarding value creation. Meanwhile, higher (>50%) family holdings are detrimental to foreign institutional investors, while moderate holdings (26–49%) improve domestic institutional investments. The favorable effect of foreign players gets diluted with the higher (>50%) family holdings, while the adverse impact of domestic players improves with the moderate (26–49%) family holdings. Overall, partial family control is beneficial, while low and absolute family control is detrimental to market value. These findings indicate that institutional investors are family control-dependent, where the family control effect is not static.

Originality/value

This paper offers a novel perspective by addressing the effect of costs and benefits realized at three distinctive levels of family holdings on foreign and domestic institutional investors and their value impacts to witness differences caused by varying family control, which is not done earlier as per the best of our knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

Esports is emerging as a global sensation, yet its distinctive nature complicates our understanding of players' motivations. This study leverages self-hierarchy and self-determination theories to examine the motivations that define players at individual, relational, and community levels, seeking to identify which motivations are most valued.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method approach was employed, focusing on Honor of Kings esports players in China to explore the answers to the research questions. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted to uncover self-definitional motivations at various levels. Second, a quantitative study was conducted with 607 regular Honor of Kings players to empirically examine the effects of the identified motivations on satisfaction.

Findings

The qualitative and quantitative data results reveal that self-efficacy and self-worth at the individual level, recognition and emotional attachment from close others at the relational-self level, and cocreation and belongingness at the collective level positively influence game satisfaction. More importantly, self-definitional motivations at the relational level are valued the most. Additionally, identification with a game character moderates the effects of self-definitional motivation at the collective level and emotional attachment at the relational-self level.

Originality/value

This research delves into players' motivations for engaging with Honor of Kings, anchored in self-hierarchy and self-determination theories. It uncovers that motivations rooted in different aspects of self-identity have distinct associations with players’ satisfaction level. This suggests a vital strategy for game designers and operators to adopt: to enhance player satisfaction, they should specifically address and emphasize the aspects of self-identity that matter most to their audience.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the realtionship between the strategic maneuvers in working capital management (WCM) and the ensuing corporate performance, chiefly within the purview of companies aligned with Shariah-compliant financial practices during epochs of fiscal distress.

Design/methodology/approach

This study deploys a fixed effect regression model to dissect the WCM-performance nexus for Shariah and non-Shariah compliance firms in the UK. Here, the authors used FTSE 350 index data from 1990 till 2022. The authors used return on assets, return on equity and net profit margin as the dependent variables and they used working capital as the independent variable. Finally, a set of different control variables including, size, leverage, dividend and research and development. Furthermore, for robust purposes, the authors use the system generalized method of moments estimation.

Findings

The findings reveal a significant relationship between WCM and firm performance across different crisis periods. Effective WCM is associated with improved profitability and stability in firms. This study shows that firms with efficient WCM strategies were better positioned to navigate the financial turmoil of the GFC, the operational disruptions during COVID-19 and the economic impacts of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.

Originality/value

This research provides a significant perspective by spotlighting Sharia-compliant entities, thus charting new territory in the strategic finance discourse. In addition, the focus on Shariah-compliant firms introduces a novel perspective within the financial management domain, offering valuable insights for both academic researchers and financial practitioners.
