Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to perform the bibliometric analysis of the customer engagement (CE) literature, highlights the major research themes and classifies the subdomains. The study also identifies antecedents and consequences, as well as dimension evolution, and suggests future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a comprehensive bibliometric approach using Scopus data from 2002 to January 2024. Advanced analytical techniques, including bibliometric and cocitation analysis using R and bibexcel, were used. In addition, machine learning (ML)-based Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) was used to extract latent themes.

Findings

This study reveals the domain’s past trend and present research scenario. The thematic analysis of CE is classified into three phases. Document cocitation analysis provided four broad clusters: conceptualization and operationalization, value creation through engagement, building relationships with brands and engagement-social media interface. The antecedents and consequences are categorized and presented along with the evolution of the multidimensional nature of CE.

Originality/value

This study adds to the literature in two key ways. First, the entire scholarly production has been compiled into one frame. Second, multiple methods were used to unravel citation, cocitation and textual data. Furthermore, ML-based LDA was used to extract latent themes from clusters and future research directions were proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to outline and hierarchically rank the key enablers that support the digital nomad lifestyle, identifying their interrelationships and contextual importance within the ecosystem.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilizes a multi-method approach encompassing modified total interpretive structural modeling (m-TISM) and matrice d’impacts croisés multiplication appliquée à un classement (MICMAC) analysis, complemented by a one-tailed t-test to validate the model.

Findings

The research identified nine crucial enablers that facilitate the digital nomad lifestyle. The study effectively maps out their hierarchical relationships and the dynamics of their interactions.

Research limitations/implications

While the study offers significant insights, it relies heavily on expert opinions, which may introduce subjective bias. Additionally, the dynamic nature of digital nomadism might limit the long-term applicability of the findings.

Practical implications

The findings have substantial implications for policymakers and corporate leaders. By understanding the key enablers and their interactions, stakeholders can develop targeted strategies that enhance support for digital nomads, potentially increasing organizational flexibility and global reach.

Originality/value

This study contributes original insights by applying an advanced m-TISM approach to the digital nomad sector, a topic of growing relevance in post-pandemic work arrangements. It provides a comprehensive framework that integrates various theoretical and practical perspectives, which were fragmented previously.

Abstract

Purpose

Autonomous floor-cleaning robots (AFCRs) have become increasingly popular due to their ability to provide efficient and effective cleaning without the need for human intervention. These robots can perform various cleaning tasks, such as vacuum cleaning, mopping, scrubbing or sweeping, in domestic or industrial setups. As the use of floor-cleaning robots continues to grow, this paper aims to document key technological advancements.

Design/methodology/approach

The structure of the present work relies on published research articles excavated from general online research databases such as Google Scholar, Web of Science and Scopus. The authors use a variety of keywords and titles to search for research papers. Finally, 93 research articles are selected for review based on abstracts and key results that match AFCRs.

Findings

According to market trends, floor-cleaning robots dominate other cleaning areas. This review mainly focuses on five attributes of floor-cleaning robots: design and development of AFCR, complete coverage path planning, the application of machine learning (ML)/deep learning (DL), optimisation strategies for qualitative output and ethnographic studies. It also consists of discussions based on the results of reported technical works. Hence, AFCRs have dominated the market in the past decade and are likely to be more aggressive in the coming years.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, only a survey article based on US-granted patents published in 2013 constitutes a review work in the research domain on AFCRs. In 2021, another review conducted a survey on the latest technological advancements in window-cleaning robots. It reviewed in detail the locomotion aspects, control mechanisms, adhesion mechanisms, sensors and actuators required for window-cleaning robots. In 2019, a comprehensive review was published on cleaning robots from a control strategy perspective for domestic applications. Therefore, the authors have crafted this review to understand the evolution of floor-cleaning robots in the past decade.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the support for multi-party collaboration in project construction provided by building information modeling (BIM). Based on the perspective of value co-creation, the research results can provide support for the collaborative application and contract design of BIM platform.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an evolutionary game model involving the owner, designer and constructor is constructed by using prospect theory and evolutionary game theory. Through simulation analysis, the evolution law of the strategy choice of each party in the collaborative application of BIM platform is discussed and the key factors affecting the strategy choice of all parties are analyzed.

Findings

The results show that there is an ideal local equilibrium point with progressive stability in the evolutionary game between the three parties: “the construction party shares information, the designer receives the information and optimizes the project and the owner does not provide incentives”; in addition, the opportunistic behaviors of the design and construction parties, as well as the probability of such behaviors being detected and the subsequent punishment have a significant impact on the evolutionary outcome.

Originality/value

This method can provide support for the collaborative application and contract design of BIM platform.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the evolution of massive open online courses (MOOCs) literature over the past 15 years and identifies its significant developments.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing main path analysis (MPA) on a dataset of 1,613 articles from the Web of Science (WoS) databases, the authors construct the main pathway in MOOC literature through a citation analysis. Pajek software is used to visualize the 34 influential articles identified in the field.

Findings

Three phases emerge in MOOC research: connectivism as a learning theory, facilitating education reform and breaking barriers to MOOCs adoption. Multiple-Global MPA highlights sub-themes including self-regulated learning (SRL), motivation, engagement, dropouts, student performance and the impact of COVID-19.

Research limitations/implications

First, data limitations from the WoS core collection might not cover all research, but using reputable sources enhances data validity. Second, despite careful algorithm selection to enhance accuracy, there remains a limitation inherent in the nature of citations. Such biased citations may result in findings that do not fully align with scholars' perspectives.

Practical implications

The authors' findings contribute to the understanding of MOOCs literature development, enabling educators and researchers to grasp key trends and focus areas in the field. It can inform the design and implementation of MOOCs for more effective educational outcomes.

Originality/value

This study presents novel methodologies and important findings for advancing research and practice in MOOCs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify and analyse critical barriers to cloud manufacturing (CM) adoption for achieving sustainability amongst manufacturing micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in an emerging economy.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, through a literature survey and expert inputs, this study identified and finalized 21 critical barriers to CM adoption, which were further analysed by employing a hybrid multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach. In this approach, the best–worst method (BWM) was used to rank the identified barriers. However, to analyse the interrelation amongst these barriers and classify them into the cause-effect group, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method was employed. Furthermore, the study recommended various strategies that can help overcome high-priority barriers and enhance CM adoption within firms.

Findings

The results of the study show that organizational, legal and economic barriers are the high-priority barriers that need to be addressed to enhance CM adoption.

Practical implications

The findings of the study will help managers and decision-makers in manufacturing MSMEs develop effective strategies and policies to enhance CM adoption.

Originality/value

Notably, this investigation is one of the preliminary research activities to explore the sustainability aspect of CM adoption amongst MSMEs in an emerging economy.

Abstract

Purpose

The recent pandemic (COVID-19) and the continuous ICT advancements have resulted in increased levels of technostress. On this basis, the present work tried to explore how technostress influences employees’ turnover intention with the mediation of work-exhaustion. Deploying the theoretical lens of job demands-resources theory, the authors also aim to investigate the part that positive psychological capital (PsyCap) has to play as a moderator in between technostress and work-exhaustion.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilizes a time-lagged methodological design; data was gathered from 544 Indian IT employees. Additionally, PLS-SEM was used to carry out the aforementioned moderation-mediation analysis.

Findings

All the hypotheses proposed were confirmed. It was found that technostress significantly impacts employees’ turnover intention. Additionally, work-exhaustion does mediate the relationship between technostress and employees’ turnover intention. Furthermore, PsyCap did play the role of a moderator between Technostress and work-exhaustion.

Practical implications

This paper provides an augmented understanding of technostress in IT organizations and highlights the role of personal resources in aiding employees’ to deal with technostress.

Originality/value

This study is one of the early studies to highlight the role of positive psychological capital in mitigating the impact of technology-induced exhaustion and employees’ turnover intention.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the current study is to inspect the influence of high temperatures on the compressive and split-tensile-strength (STS) of concrete mixtures produced by replacing natural river sand with waste-foundry sand (WFS) at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. When the experimental findings and the projected outcomes were compared by IS:456-2000 code equations, the STS results predicted by the suggested mathematical equations exhibit lower variations. It is proposed to employ the presented mathematical formulas to evaluate the STS of concrete cylindrical specimens at higher temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

After fabricating, concrete mixtures were allowed to cure for 28 days. For the purpose of avoiding explosive spalling during the heating process, concrete samples are taken out from the curing chamber after 28 days and allowed to dry for two days. The manufactured concrete specimen is exposed to 100 °C, 200 °C, 300 °C, 400 °C, 500 °C and 600 °C temperatures for a duration of 2 h. After the specimens have cool down to room temperature (RT), the physical test, ultrasonic-pulse-velocity (UPV) test, compressive strength test and STS test are carried out.

Findings

With an increase in WFS content, concrete specimens' residue compressive-strength and STS decreases. The STS of samples declines as the WFS content rises with increase in temperature interval. According to the UPV test, the concrete samples quality is “good” up to 400 °C; after 500 °C, it ranges from “doubtful to poor.” The UPV values of various mixes declined as the temperature increased. Mass losses increase with exposure to greater temperatures and with an increase in the proportions of WFS in concrete specimens. For mixtures MWFS-0, MWFS-1, MWFS-2, MWFS-3 and MWFS-4 (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% WFS content), no cracks were present on any of the samples below 400 °C. Concrete surfaces start to show cracks whenever the intervals of temperature increase above 400 °C.

Originality/value

In this investigation, WFS elements are totally substituted for natural sand in concrete mixtures. The residue strength properties, including residual compressive strength and residual STS, were found to be lower after exposures to greater temperature when comparisons were made to referral mixtures. When comparing specimens’ compressive strength, higher temperatures have more effects on the STS of samples with higher WFS contents.

Abstract

Purpose

Music and sound have been used pervasively to enhance the tourism and hospitality experience. Incorporating music into a brand’s identity has the potential to influence consumer perceptions and decision-making. This study aims to identify how sonic branding influences consumer attitudes and engagement patterns with hotel brands by using feelings as information theory and applying the effects of music on neurochemical phenomena in the brain. It also explores how sonic branding differentially influences the decision-making of consumer segments.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental studies are used to examine how sonic brands influence consumer perceptions and engagement tendencies. Study 1 (n = 92) adopts a single-factor experimental design to investigate the main effects of sonic branding (presence vs absence) on customers’ responses. Study 2 (n = 204) uses a 2 (sonic branding: present vs. absent) × 2 (purpose of travel: leisure vs business) design to examine the interaction effects. Participants were recruited through Prolific.

Findings

Results indicate that the use of sonic branding increases engagement tendencies for a hotel brand. In addition, sonic branding interacted with the purpose of travel such that business travelers exhibited more favorable attitudes and higher engagement tendencies toward a hotel brand than leisure travelers when a sonic brand was used.

Originality/value

Given the proliferation of audio-centric environments, this research provides insight into how tourism and hospitality brands can engage and connect with customers by developing sonic brands that can be used throughout the customer journey.

Objetivo

La música y el sonido se han utilizado de forma generalizada para mejorar la experiencia del turismo y la hostelería. La incorporación de la música a la identidad de una marca tiene el potencial de influir en las percepciones y la toma de decisiones de los consumidores. Este estudio pretende identificar cómo influye la marca sonora (o audio branding) en las actitudes de los consumidores y en sus patrones de compromiso con las marcas hoteleras utilizando los sentimientos como teoría de la información y aplicando los efectos de la música en los fenómenos neuroquímicos del cerebro. También explora cómo influye diferencialmente la marca sonora en la toma de decisiones de los segmentos de consumidores.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Se emplean estudios experimentales para examinar cómo influyen las marcas sónicas en las percepciones y las tendencias de compromiso de los consumidores. El estudio 1 (N = 92) adopta un diseño experimental de factor único para investigar los efectos principales de la marca sonora (presencia frente a ausencia) en las respuestas de los clientes. El estudio 2 (N = 204) utiliza un diseño 2 (marca sonora: presente frente a ausente) × 2 (Objetivo del viaje: ocio frente a negocios) para examinar los efectos de interacción. Los participantes fueron reclutados a través de Prolific.

Resultados

Los resultados indican que el uso de la marca sonora aumenta las tendencias de compromiso con una marca hotelera. Además, la marca sonora interactuó con el objetivo del viaje de forma que los viajeros de negocios mostraron actitudes más favorables y mayores tendencias de compromiso hacia una marca hotelera que los viajeros de ocio cuando se utilizó una marca sonora.

Originalidad

Dada la proliferación de entornos audiocéntricos, esta investigación ofrece una visión de cómo las marcas turísticas y de hostelería pueden captar la atención de los clientes y conectar con ellos desarrollando marcas sonoras que puedan utilizarse a lo largo de todo el viaje del cliente.

Abstract

Purpose

To become a sustainable lean manufacturing (LM) system, an organization must be first distinctly cognizant of the terms “lean” and “sustainability” as they relate to the state of affairs of their particular industry and business. Next, the organization must identify and acquire the necessary qualities it needs to become sustainable in lean philosophy and its practices in the organization. The LM paradigm has been a top priority for many businesses; thus, this article is based on actual research done in Indian small and medium scale organizations to see how widely it is understood and implemented.

Design/methodology/approach

A framework was developed based on literature review and academic research. A preliminary analysis of a small number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that, conceptually, summarizes and demonstrates the concerted efforts that a company may undertake to increase its leanness. This conceptual model was employed to create a questionnaire that was administered to survey the SMEs of India. The information gathered through this questionnaire was analyzed using the model developed by the researchers. Then fuzzy logic and systems approach were used to find out the effectiveness index (EI) of the organization.

Findings

The EI for system leanness at different organizational levels within an organization is determined using fuzzy logic and systems approach for 48 SMEs in different clusters. The average EI of the system was found to be 0.336 on a scale of 0–1 which indicates that the current state of lean implementation and its sustainability is very low and poor in Indian SMEs. This article outlines the key model components and describes how they were applied to analyze the data gathered from an industry study.

Research limitations/implications

The research aims to make lean continuously sustainable by surfacing and eliminating the wastes in the Indian SMEs whenever it appears rather than using it as a cleaning tool. The present study was focused on India’s southern industrial areas and it was difficult to gather the information around the country due to its diverse industrial culture and geography. Hence, more research and the comparative study of the same that takes into account the various regions of the nation’s industrial lean behavior can be conducted.

Practical implications

The generalized sustainable lean framework analyzed using fuzzy logic and systems approach gives the current effectiveness of the leanness in SMEs of south India. This model can be effectively implemented in other areas of the nation to identify the scenario of lean and its sustainability and a final comprehensive model can be developed.

Originality/value

There is a dearth of comprehensive studies on the assessment of sustainability of the lean philosophy in Indian SMEs. With the help of combined fuzzy logic and systems approach, the model developed in this study evaluates the sustainability of the lean methodology using the EI used in SMEs by taking into account both the lean and sustainability factors as well as enablers like customer satisfaction, ethics, innovation and technology.
