Abstract
Purpose
This research provides an empirical test of Andersson and Pearson’s (1999) theoretical incivility spiral. Rather than investigate the incidence of incivility perpetration following incivility victimization in face-to-face interactions, this study tests for evidence of an incivility spiral due to communications enacted through information and communication technology (ICT) based on affective events theory (AET) (Weiss and Cropanzano, 1996). Further, the moderating impacts of both gender and incivility climate on this relationship are considered.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample for this Time 1–Time 2 survey-based research was comprised of 354 full-time working adults from a wide range of organizations. We employed hierarchical moderated regression analyses as our primary data analytic technique.
Findings
Results demonstrate that victims of ICT incivility at Time 1 are likely to be perpetrators of ICT incivility at Time 2. Furthermore, this relationship is stronger for men than it is for women and is exacerbated in cultures that have a low tolerance for ICT incivility.
Originality/value
This is the first known test of the incidence of an incivility spiral due to communications enacted through ICT. There is special cause for concern given the often-impersonal nature of ICT use (and abuse) in organizations. Individuals may feel emboldened by the distance and perceived safety ICT mediation affords and may be less likely to moderate their online interactions with colleagues. Absent the physical intimacy and non-verbal signals that face-to-face interactions provide, individuals may be more likely to perpetuate incivility in ICT interactions even if there is no implicit intent to harm others.

Abstract
Purpose
A tangible representation of the housing market hotness, namely, the index derived via Carrilo 2013’s concept, is widely used but difficult to construct, as it requires listing data of a geography which is not only inaccessible but also cumbersome to summarize. The purpose of this paper is to serve as a methodological extension of Carrilo 2013, presenting a process by which the seller’s bargaining power index can be easily constructed using open-source data.
Design/methodology/approach
The seller’s bargaining power index was first constructed using the open-source data by Zillow Research. Then, results verification approach including visualization, Pearson correlation test, Granger causality test and linear regression were used with the goal to generate empirical evidence and verify if the constructed index conforms with established relationships derived in past work, thereby substantiate accuracy of the constructed index.
Findings
Monthly seller’s bargaining power index was constructed for US as a whole and 250 metropolitan statistical areas through an automated process. The constructed index conforms with established evidence in terms of seasonality, trend and magnitude. The index also forms positive correlation with building permit/housing value/housing value increase rate, and negative correlation with inventory. It requires the explanatory power of multiple linear features to simulate the parameter. Seller’s bargaining power index at a national level can serve as a general indicator of economic strength, in parallel to number of building permit, housing starts and real gross domestic product. Quantitatively, the housing market of the USA is as “hot” during the COVID-19 pandemic as it was in the years before 2008. A healthy housing market appears to be one in which 75%−80% of the deals are in favor of the seller (take-it-or-leave-it). When said percentage reaches 90%, the market should be considered to be in a “bubble.”
Originality/value
This paper provides an easy pathway for future studies to simulate housing market hotness, and bring upon the benefit of convenience at low cost and in monthly frequency rather than quarterly or annually.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to provide a holistic understanding of the factors that either promote or hinder the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in supply chain management (SCM) and operations management (OM). By segmenting the AI lifecycle and examining the interactions between critical success factors and critical failure factors, this study aims to offer predictive insights that can help in proactively managing these factors, ultimately reducing the risk of failure, and facilitating a smoother transition into AI-enabled SCM and OM.
Design/methodology/approach
This study develops a knowledge graph model of the AI lifecycle, divided into pre-development, deployment and post-development stages. The methodology combines a comprehensive literature review for ontology extraction and expert surveys to establish relationships among ontologies. Using exploratory factor analysis, composite reliability and average variance extracted ensures the validity of constructed dimensions. Pearson correlation analysis is applied to quantify the strength and significance of relationships between entities, providing metrics for labeling the edges in the resource description framework.
Findings
This study identifies 11 dimensions critical for AI integration in SCM and OM: (1) setting clear goals and standards; (2) ensuring accountable AI with leadership-driven strategies; (3) activating leadership to bridge expertise gaps; (4) gaining a competitive edge through expert partnerships and advanced IT infrastructure; (5) improving data quality through customer demand; (6) overcoming AI resistance via awareness of benefits; (7) linking domain knowledge to infrastructure robustness; (8) enhancing stakeholder engagement through effective communication; (9) strengthening AI robustness and change management via training and governance; (10) using key performance indicators-driven reviews for AI performance management; (11) ensuring AI accountability and copyright integrity through governance.
Originality/value
This study enhances decision-making by developing a knowledge graph model that segments the AI lifecycle into pre-development, deployment and post-development stages, introducing a novel approach in SCM and OM research. By incorporating a predictive element that uses knowledge graphs to anticipate outcomes from interactions between ontologies. These insights assist practitioners in making informed decisions about AI use, improving the overall quality of decisions in managing AI integration and ensuring a smoother transition into AI-enabled SCM and OM.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper was to identify talent development practices and processes that enhance professional and career growth of employees in South African higher education institutions (HEIs).
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative study was carried out to investigate the subject matter. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from 265 academics in three South African HEIs. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 27.0, was used to analyse the data. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and factor analysis were used to test the reliability and validity of the measuring instrument. Pearson’s correlations and regression analysis were used to interpret the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
Findings
The results of the Pearson correlation test established a strong positive influence of training development, coaching and mentoring and career development on talent development. On the other hand, linear regression results indicated that training and development, coaching and mentoring and career development made a strong contribution to the model.
Research limitations/implications
The scope of the study only applied to South African HEIs, making the generalisation of the findings to be limited because of the differences in an organisational context. Hence, future research should focus on different industries.
Practical implications
The study contributes to understanding how talent development can be leveraged to assist academics in HEIs to improve their professional and career goals. The findings suggest that HEIs must invest in talent development to help academics acquire the skills, knowledge and competencies required to perform their tasks.
Originality/value
This paper sheds more light on talent development practices and processes that enhance academic skills, knowledge and competencies in HEIs. Moreover, the study expands on the findings of prior studies concerning talent development in learning organisations.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is the same as those of the preceding 16 studies on happiness, health and religion, and they are as follows: to estimate the mean scores and the sex-related differences in the study scales; to examine the associations between the study scales; to investigate the principal components; and to compare the present results with the previous findings.
Design/methodology/approach
A non-probability sample of university students in the United Arab Emirates was selected by the “snowball” sample method. To overcome the issue of people refusing to participate in the study, this method was used in the selection process due to the challenge of sampling students in all the universities across the nation, which makes it difficult to choose a probability sample. The approval of the Ethics Committee was obtained from Ajman University to apply the study tools, and then the students were given the choice through open announcement to participate in the study and circulate it to other students at Ajman University.
Findings
Results showed that men had significantly higher mean ratings on mental health, physical health and happiness than did women. All the Pearson correlations between the scales were significant for men. Except for the correlations between religiosity and both happiness and mental health, all correlations between the scales for women were significant. A principal components analysis extracted one component for men which was labeled “Well-being and religiosity”, whereas two components were retained for the women which were labeled “Well-being” and “Religiosity and physical health”. Comparing the present sample’s mean happiness score to that of prior students from 16 other countries revealed that it was higher and consistent with other scores from rich Arab nations with a high GDP per capita (such as Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman). In conclusion, happiness was found to be associated with mental and physical health in both men and women, as well as religiosity in men.
Research limitations/implications
Despite the strengths of the current investigation, i.e. the large sample size and the good to high reliability and validity properties of the scales, some limitations have to be acknowledged. First, the convenience and non-probability sample. Second, university students are a special segment of any country. Their age range is limited, and they probably have greater intelligence and more education compared to the general population. Therefore, a replication of the present study using a probability sample from the general population is needed.
Practical implications
SPSS (2009) was used for data analysis. Means, standard deviations, t-tests, d for effect size, Pearson product moment correlation coefficients and principal components analysis were used. For the principal components analysis, the Kaiser criterion (i.e. eigenvalue > 1.0) and the scree plot were used to define the number of components to be retained.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study about happiness in United Arab Emirates.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the role of information normalization in online healthcare consultation, a typical complex human-to-human communication requiring both effectiveness and efficiency. The globalization and digitization trend calls for high-quality information, and normalization is considered an effective method for improving information quality. Meanwhile, some researchers argued that excessive normalization (standardized answers) may be perceived as impersonal, repetitive, and cold. Thus, it is not appreciated for human-to-human communication, for instance, when patients are anxious about their health condition (e.g. with high-risk disease) in online healthcare consultation. Therefore, the role of information normalization in human communication is worthy to be explored.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from one of the largest online healthcare consultation platforms (Dxy.com). This study expanded the existing information quality model by introducing information normalization as a new dimension. Information normalization was assessed using medical templates, extracted through natural language processing methods such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Patient decision-making behaviors, namely, consultant selection and satisfaction, were chosen to evaluate communication performance.
Findings
The results confirmed the positive impact of information normalization on communication performance. Additionally, a negative moderating effect of disease risk on the relationship between information normalization and patient decision-making was identified. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that information normalization can be enhanced through experiential learning.
Originality/value
These findings highlighted the significance of information normalization in online healthcare communication and extended the existing information quality model. It also facilitated patient decision-making on online healthcare platforms by providing a comprehensive information quality measurement. In addition, the moderating effects indicated the contradiction between informational support and emotional support, enriching the social support theory.

Abstract
Purpose
The main objective of the present study is to investigate whether the hybrid work environment generated by the COVID-19 pandemic has availed a predominant type of leadership, namely transformational, transactional or passive-avoidant, and to what extent each of the three leadership styles and their subscales correlate with the job-related affective well-being (JAW) of employees, in terms of both positive and negative emotions.
Design/methodology/approach
In order to obtain a comprehensive view of the subject and to carry out a thorough analysis, the primary data were collected via the application of a questionnaire-based survey. With a view to ensure sample consistency, the study was conducted with Romanian employees working in big corporations from various services sectors. A convenience sample of 203 respondents was retrieved, the selection of individuals being catalyzed by three managers from different companies who have decided to distribute the invitation to fill in the online questionnaire throughout their personal and professional networks. The results were analyzed by means of bivariate correlations, namely Pearson linear coefficients of correlations computed between the subscales of the leadership styles and JAW.
Findings
Overall, the findings showed both positive and negative correlations between the transformational, transactional and passive-avoidant leadership subscales and the components JAW, most of the transformational leadership dimensions positively correlating with the positive emotions covered by JAW.
Research limitations/implications
The study brings forward compelling insights into the employee well-being within the context of the hybrid work environment triggered by COVID-19 pandemic and signals the importance of placing people at the core of sustainability during the “new normal”.
Practical implications
The study offers practical implications for managers aiming to enhance employee well-being in hybrid work settings. Emphasizing transformational leadership, which fosters positive emotions, can boost engagement and job satisfaction, thereby improving overall organizational performance. Managers are encouraged to adopt people-centric practices, focusing on support, recognition and clear communication to reinforce employees’ emotional resilience. Additionally, understanding the varying effects of leadership styles on different demographics can guide tailored management approaches, enhancing inclusivity and effectiveness.
Social implications
The study underscores the broader social value of prioritizing employee well-being, particularly within hybrid work models. Supportive leadership not only impacts workplace morale but also extends benefits to employees' personal lives, enhancing overall mental health and reducing stress. Such improvements can foster a healthier work–life balance, positively influencing family dynamics and social connections. By encouraging leadership approaches that contribute to positive work experiences, organizations play a role in strengthening community resilience and fostering a culture of empathy. Purpose
The aim of this study is to examine the patterns of fraud present in Valeant’s 2014 and 2015 financial statements and determine through a risk management analysis whether these frauds could have been prevented. This analysis provides the opportunity to more effectively prevent financial statement fraud.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from Valeant pharmaceuticals annual reports, financial statements reports and financial authority documentation. Based on these documents, this paper analyzes the different fraud schemes and investigate whether fraud could have been detected earlier by governance actors. In particular, this paper examines the firm’s financial statements three years before the fraud was detected by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Findings
The analysis of financial statements reveals few clues and no alarming red flags three years before detection of the fraud. However, financial statement analyses were complex because of the many acquisitions the firm made in the years before.
Originality/value
This paper aims to contribute to the literature on fraud by investigating a case of financial statement fraud.

Abstract
Purpose
This examine the impact of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance on financial reporting quality (FRQ) before and during COVID-19 in the Egyptian market.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses quarterly data from 2017 to 2021 to draw conclusions, with a sample consisting of 486 firm-year observations for 27 Egyptian companies listed on the Standard and Poor’s/Egyptian Stock Exchange ESG index. This study uses both firms’ ESG scores and the Beneish Model, an earnings detection model, as proxies for FRQ. COVID-19 effects on ESG performance and FRQ were examined by using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and two-stage least squares.
Findings
COVID-19 has a significant impact on the link between ESG and FRQ. This implies that corporations with high ESG performance are less likely to manipulate earnings (having a low M-score) and thus provide high FRQ during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, there is a significant positive relationship between firm size, leverage and M-Score, indicating that large firms typically present a high FRQ.
Research limitations/implications
The sample size and data availability are the main research limitations. Additionally, this study only considers the effects of firms’ ESG performance on FRQ during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, future research should consider other factors associated with investors’ corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Practical implications
This research has practical implications for market regulators seeking to establish a legislative framework and enhance guidance to mandate managers to provide ESG data and CSR reports appropriate for Egypt and other developing economies in times of crisis.
Social implications
Promoting the adoption of ESG practices in business, particularly during crises, has the potential to effectively provide high-quality and reliable financial reporting required for investment.
Originality/value
This study aspires to address notable deficiencies in the pertinent literature concerning the relationship between ESG performance and FRQ during COVID-19. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, little is known about how ESG performance changes in response to pandemics in emerging markets. To address this gap, this study examines the effects of COVID-19 on the relationship between ESG performance and FRQ in Egyptian-listed firms from 2017 to 2021.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore and analyze the disparities in the distribution of housing types and characteristics among households in Saudi Arabia, taking into consideration the regional perspective.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses quantitative data obtained from the General Authority for Statistics, specifically from the Saudi 2022 Statistical Census. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentages) as well as inferential statistics, including correlation analysis (Pearson correlation) and t-tests.
Findings
The study found a distinct preference among Saudis for villas, with 85.3% choosing this housing type, while only 14.7% of non-Saudis opted for villas. The statistical analysis confirmed the significance of housing type for Saudi citizens (t = 2.561, p = 0.037), while non-Saudis did not show a statistically significant preference (t = 1.703, p = 0.132). The Pearson correlation results revealed a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.641, p = 0.009) between regional landmass and the number of houses, and a very strong positive relationship (r = 0.984) between population and the number of houses across the 13 regions. As expected, with increasing population, there was a significant increase in the number of houses (p = 0.001).
Originality/value
This study fills a research gap by investigating regional disparities in housing characteristics in Saudi Arabia. The findings are valuable for policymakers, housing developers and the housing market in understanding these disparities. The insights from this research can inform decision-making to promote equitable access to housing types and foster social inclusivity in the housing sector.
