Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the interactions between new product development (NPD) and engineering change management (ECM) processes in terms of their impact on organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A system dynamics model of the NPD and ECM processes within an organization has been built and simulated for a range of parameter values to investigate the interactions between the two processes.

Findings

The effect of various parameters on the lead‐time of the NPD process varies with different process environments. No single process management policy is advantageous for most if not all process operating conditions, thus it is important to change the critical parameters of the process every time.

Research limitations/implications

The accuracy of the estimated effect of parameters on the lead‐time depends on the accuracy of estimated parameter values.

Practical implications

The insights developed from the results would be useful for managers in planning their process management policies under various circumstances.

Originality/value

The study of interactions between the ECM and NPD processes has been scarce. This research would be very helpful to managers who plan the process managing strategies given various circumstances such as limited resources.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a framework for developing an integrated operating environment (IOE) within an enterprise information system by incorporating business continuity drivers. These drivers enable a business to continue with its operations even if some sort of failure or disaster occurs.

Design/methodology/approach

Development and implementation of the framework are based on holistic and top‐down approach. An IOE on server's side of contemporary business computing is investigated in depth.

Findings

Key disconnection points are identified, where systems integration technologies can be used to integrate platforms, protocols, data and application formats, etc. Downtime points are also identified and explained. A thorough list of main business continuity drivers (continuous computing (CC) technologies) for enhancing business continuity is identified and presented. The framework can be utilized in developing an integrated server operating environment for enhancing business continuity.

Originality/value

This paper presents a comprehensive framework including exhaustive handling of enabling drivers as well as disconnection points toward CC and business continuity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a simulation model for assessing innovation deployment strategies by evaluating and comparing their outcomes using a hybrid modeling and simulation of agent‐based modelling and simulation (ABMS) and system dynamics (SD). Since successful deployment of innovations in any organization is as important as the innovations themselves, how to choose a suitable deployment strategy and assess its effectiveness before actual implementation is a critical task.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts a hybrid modeling and simulation approach combining the advantages of agent‐based modeling and system dynamics to study the activities and strategies involved in innovation deployment. The developed model was verified and validated with the data from GM's OnStar project.

Findings

The research demonstrates that evaluating various deployment strategies for desirable results through hybrid modeling and simulation is possible and useful by finding critical factors and making appropriate forecast, which would aid managers in assessment of innovation deployment strategies and deployment decision‐making processes.

Research limitations/implications

The hybrid modeling and simulation approach provides a powerful tool in various study fields, not only in industries, but also suitable to evaluate the system outputs in both macroscopic and microscopic point of view for many strategy‐making or consulting firms. The presented work is meant for proof‐of‐concept, so numerous expansions are necessary for use in different projects.

Practical implications

For the case evaluated in this paper, it is found that a customer‐oriented strategy outperforms a cost‐oriented strategy in market share as well as customer satisfaction and profit. Cooperation and R&D are essential innovation drivers, but from the study, customer satisfaction does not solely depend on technical advantages. Alliance is a key factor to reduce the cost and risk of uncertainties. The structure and approach of the presented hybrid simulation model can be adopted for other cases to derive conclusions.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper lies in the way of adopting a hybrid modeling and simulation approach to study the effects of innovation deployment strategies. The model can be modified and used in a wide range of organizations to evaluate different strategies and aid decision‐making processes.

Abstract

Purpose

To develop a methodology to augment enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems with the discrete event simulation's inherent ability to handle the uncertainties.

Design/methodology/approach

The ERP system still contains and uses the material requirements planning (MRP) logic as its central planning function. As a result, the ERP system inherits a number of shortcomings associated with the MRP system, including unrealistic lead‐time determination. The developed methodology employs bi‐directional feedback between the non‐stochastic ERP system and the discrete event simulation model until a set of converged lead times is determined.

Findings

An example of determining realistic production lead‐time data in the ERP system is presented to illustrate how such a marriage can be achieved.

Research limitations/implications

The research demonstrates that the limited planning functionality of the ERP system can be complemented by external system such as discrete event simulation models. The specific steps developed for this research can be adopted for other enhancements in different but comparable situations.

Practical implications

The organizations who have been using the discrete event simulation in their planning and decision‐making processes can integrate their simulation models and the ERP system following the steps presented in this paper. The ideas in this paper can be used to look for automatic data collection process to update or build the simulation models.

Originality/value

The ERP implementation is a significant investment for any corporation. Once the ERP implementation is completed successfully, the corporations must look for ways to maximally return on their investment. The research results may be used to enhance the implemented ERP systems or to fully utilize the capabilities in a corporation.

Abstract

The 1997-98 financial crisis has had a profound effect on how East Asian economies the role of the IMF and its strategic interests relative to those of the United States in the international financial regime. It has prompted them to create a regional mechanism for financial and monetary cooperation, ranging from deeper policy dialogue and surveillance, to a system of financial cooperation, and common exchange rate arrangements. This paper analyses the economic and strategic motivations behind this and outlines recent developments in financial cooperation in East Asia to provide possible directions for the future.

A network of bilateral swap arrangements under the Chiang Mai Initiative(CMI) needs stronger policy dialogue and surveillance to develop into a regional financing facility, a sort of East Asian IMF. The facility plays a role as an regional lender of last resort, providing short-term funds to a member country facing a temporary liquidity shortage and for market intervention to stabilize foreign exchange rate. East Asian countries need to achieve regional exchange rate stability. In the long run, the region may develop a common currency arrangement, but it cannot be expected in the very near future because there is no convergence of macroeconomic conditions, economic structure and systems. A realistic approach would be for East Asian developing countries to adopt a currency basket system to minimize the impact of dollar/yen exchange rate volatility on their economies. Strong political will and a vision for regional integration will be required to introduce it.

Abstract

BOOKS and Libraries for the Blind form the subject of a paper by Dr. Robert C. Moon in the May Library Journal. The writer is the son of William Moon, the inventor of the system of embossed writing bearing his name. He describes the systems of writing for the blind in use, and the various agencies for circulating literature. After examining the existing departments for the blind in Public Libraries, he comes to the conclusion that “all the libraries need more books, and if they are to reach and teach the adult blind they must have a fair proportion of them in the Moon type. All Public Libraries should possess a few works printed in the various types, care being taken to have a good supply of those embossed in the special type which is taught in the schools for the blind of the immediate locality, in order that the pupils in vacation time, and the graduates of the schools may be provided with reading matter, but the infirm and aged blind will be found in almost all communities, and for them books printed in the Moon type are indispensable. Alice S. Tyler describes the League of Library Commissions. “The success of the experiment in co‐operation which was inaugurated in 1901 by the library commissions of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa, whereby printed matter of common interest and equal necessity and value to these commissions was issued jointly, led to the suggestion that a national organization might more economically carry forward these and other lines of co‐operative work, leaving to the overcrowded state commission workers more time and money for the peculiar problems of each state.” This suggestion was brought up at the St. Louis conference, and resulted in an organization being formed under the title of the League of Library Commissions, consisting of one representative from each of the commissions included. The particular directions in which the League will promote co‐operative work are: carefully prepared lists of books for first purchase for small libraries; lists of new books which, upon examination, had been found desirable ; handbook of suggestions and direction as to the organization and management of small libraries; printed statement regarding the aims and methods of state library commissions, with comparison of their laws; definite help and suggestions on the subject of library buildings, especially floor‐plans arranged for economic administration, growing out of the experience of the library commissions in connection with the erection of Carnegie and other library buildings within the last few years; united effort to bring to the attention of book publishers the urgent need of good, durable binding, adequate indexing, &c.

Abstract

Purpose

Many off-line retailers have experienced a slump in sales and have the potential risk of overstock or understock. To overcome these problems, retailers have applied data mining techniques, such as association rule mining or sequential association rule mining, to increase sales and predict product demand. However, because these techniques cannot generate shopper-centric rules, many off-line shoppers are often inconvenienced after writing their shopping lists carefully and comprehensively. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a personalized recommendation methodology for off-line grocery shoppers.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper employs a Markov chain model to generate recommendations for the shopper’s next shopping basket. The proposed methodology is based on the knowledge of both purchased products and purchase sequences. This paper compares the proposed methodology with a traditional collaborative filtering (CF)-based system, a bestseller-based system and a Markov-chain-based system as benchmark systems.

Findings

The proposed methodology achieves improvements of 15.87, 14.06 and 37.74 percent with respect to the CF-, Markov chain-, and best-seller-based benchmark systems, respectively, meaning that not only the purchased products but also the purchase sequences are important elements in the personalization of grocery recommendations.

Originality/value

Most of the previous studies on this topic have proposed on-line recommendation methodologies. However, because off-line stores collect transaction data from point-of-sale devices, this research proposes a methodology based on purchased products and purchase patterns for off-line grocery recommendations. In practice, this study implies that both purchased products and purchase sequences are viable elements in off-line grocery recommendations.

Abstract

Properly conceived, conducted and interpreted, motivation research can be an extremely powerful management tool, designed to help the manufacturer or advertiser to sell more goods. Its aim is to expose the market situation, explain it and suggest courses of action which will lead to desired changes. It is a way of looking at a problem rather than a collection of specialist techniques and is strictly practical. Hence it can be used alongside other market research tools for the solution of marketing problems and can be applied to a wide range of business activities. Much of its development has been in the advertising field but it can also help in the formulation of production policy, solving packaging problems and marketing operations. It is examined here in all these contexts. The idea of motivation research, the reasons for its use and the techniques by which to apply it are discussed, as well as the pitfalls that are likely to occur. New and imaginary case studies are used throughout to illustrate points. A review of the subject literature is included.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to synthesize published research on the policing of Asian communities in the United States.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a systematic literature review using PRISMA 2020 guidelines.

Findings

Sixteen studies were reviewed. Five examined violence by police against Asian community members and reported rates for Asians closer to those against Whites than against members of other groups. One study found no relationship between violence against police and increased minority representation on the force. Four studies reported conflicting results regarding traffic stops of Asian motorists and in general perceptions of police anti-Asian bias. One study illustrated how racialization processes reproduce inequality both between racial-ethnic categories and within them. Five studies examined Asian community members’ general attitudes toward/satisfaction with police and reported—with qualifications—generally favorable attitudes and satisfaction with them.

Originality/value

This is the first systematic literature review of policing Asian communities in the United States.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study elastic properties of III-V nitride nanotubes (NNTs) using second generation (REBO) potential.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present research paper elastic properties of BN, AlN and GaN nanotubes have been investigated, using the second generation REBO potential by Brenner and co-workers, which is a bond order potential earlier used for carbon nanostructures successfully. In the present calculation, the same form of potential is used with adjusted parameters for h-BN, h-AlN and h-GaN. In all these cases the authors have considered graphite like network and strongly polar nature of these atoms so electrostatic forces are expected to play an important role in determining elastic properties of these nanotubes. The authors generate the coordinates of nanotubes of different chirality’s and size. Each and every structure thus generated is allowed to relax till the authors obtain minima of energy. The authors then apply the requisite compressions, elongations and twists to the structures and compute the elastic moduli. Young’s Modulus, Shear Modulus and Poisson’s ratio for single-walled armchair and zigzag tubes of different chirality’s and size have been calculated. The computational results show the variation of Young’s Modulus, Poisson’s ratio and Shear Modulus for these NNTs with nanotube diameter. The results have been compared with available data, experimental as well as theoretical.

Findings

The authors have calculated bond length, cohesive energy/bond, Strain energy, Young’s Modulus, Shear Modulus and Poisson’s ratio.

Originality/value

To the best of the knowledge this work is the first attempt to study elastic properties of III-V NNTs using second generation REBO potential
