Abstract

Two sets of dual magnetodynamic and magnetostatic finite element formulations taking thin conducting magnetic shells into account are proposed. The abstraction of the thin region from the computational domain is performed by an appropriate treatment of the surface integral terms arising in the weak formulations. Results are presented for two three‐dimensional test‐problems.

Abstract

Two complementary 3D finite element formulations, with either the magnetic field or the magnetic vector potential as unknowns, are developed to deal with the modeling of eddy currents in electrical steel laminations. The magnetic flux through the flux gates of the conducting region is imposed via the boundary terms of the weak formulations, in a natural way thanks to the use of edge finite elements. The two formulations are applied to a simple 1D eddy current problem with analytical solution. As a practical 3D application example, a T‐joint region of an electrical steel lamination is considered.

Abstract

This paper deals with the modelling of transformer supply in the two‐dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) simulation of rotating electrical machines. Three different transformer models are compared. The reference one is based on two 2D FE models, considering a cross‐section either parallel or perpendicular to the laminations of the magnetic core. The parameters of the two other transformer models, a magnetic equivalent circuit and an electrical equivalent circuit, can be derived from the reference model. Particular attention is paid to some common features of the transformer models, e.g. with regard to the inclusion of iron losses. The three models are used in the 2D FE simulation of the steady‐state load operation and the starting from stand‐still of an induction motor.

Abstract

The present paper deals with the fast multipole acceleration of the 2D finite element‐boundary element modelling of electromechanical devices. It is shown that the fast multipole method, usually applied to large 3D problems, can also lead to a reduction in computational time when dealing with relatively small 2D problems, provided that an adaptive truncation scheme for the expansion of the 2D Laplace Green function is used. As an application example, the 2D hybrid modelling of a linear actuator is studied, taking into account saturation, the voltage supply and the mechanical equation. The computational cost without and with fast multipole acceleration is discussed for both the linear and nonlinear case.

Abstract

This paper deals with the two‐dimensional finite element analysis in the frequency domain of saturated electromagnetic devices coupled to electrical circuits comprising nonlinear resistive and inductive components. The resulting system of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved straightforwardly by means of the Newton‐Raphson method. As an application example we consider a three‐phase transformer feeding a nonlinear RL load through a six‐pulse diode rectifier. The harmonic balance results are compared to those obtained with time‐stepping and the computational cost is briefly discussed.

An estimate is made of the connectivity of a mammalian neuron, i.e., the number of other neurons to or from which an average neuron directly connects. The value derived is about 10. Some functional implications of the value of the connectivity are considered, particularly mental illness, epilepsy, and intelligence. The “length” and “width”, in terms of neurons, of a functional neural channel are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the policy process that led to the passage of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act in the United States and the Bush Administration's role in this process.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design is historical and archival. A description of the NCLB Act is given and the major provisions and implementation are focused upon. How the Bush Administration helped create the opportunity to pass the NCLB Act by building coalitions, and how public opinion affected the evolution of the policy process is focused upon. Finally, a description is given on how policy ideas like the concept of “accountability” shaped the policy process, and both inspired and constrained the Bush Administration.

Findings

The paper argues that the Bush Administration helped create the opportunity to pass the NCLB Act by building coalitions, and public opinion affected the evolution of the policy process. Policy ideas like the concept of “accountability” shaped the policy process, and both inspired and constrained the Bush Administration.

Research limitations/implications

The case is limited to the United States and NCLB, although those cases are particularly important in North America and in evaluation‐based research.

Practical implications

The paper shows how a policy designer can be limited both by political initiatives and his or her own conceptual grounding.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first to connect the policy process that guided President Bush's design of the NCLB legislation with the concept of “accountability”. Accountability is a foundational concept in the design of quality assurance systems.

A new method for the numerical computation of the dynamic behaviour of electro‐dynamic loudspeakers is presented. The numerical scheme, based on the finite element method (FEM), allows the simulation of coupled magnetic, mechanical and acoustic fields. Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a theoretical framework in an exploratory study using the literature to evaluate the constraints on the military side of logistics thought.

Findings

The discussion identifies challenges that may preclude military logistics thought from becoming the leaders for the foreseeable future.

Originality/value

The paper provides an examination of the changing role between military and civilian logistics that has not been carefully examined since just after the Gulf War in 1991.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review various techniques used in computational electromagnetism such as the treatment of open problems, helicoidal geometries and the design of arbitrarily shaped invisibility cloaks. This seemingly heterogeneous list is unified by the concept of geometrical transformation that leads to equivalent materials. The practical set‐up is conveniently effected via the finite element method.

Design/methodology/approach

The change of coordinates is completely encapsulated in the material properties.

Findings

The most significant examples are the simple 2D treatment of helicoidal geometries and the design of arbitrarily shaped invisibility cloaks.

Originality/value

The paper provides a unifying point of view, bridging several techniques in electromagnetism.
