Abstract

Purpose

To prevent malpractices, medical staff has adopted inventory time-outs and/or checklists. Accurate inventory and maintenance of surgical instruments decreases the risk of operating room miscounting and malfunction. In our previous study, an individual management of surgical instruments was accomplished using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate a new management method of RFID-tagged instruments.

Design/methodology/approach

The management system of RFID-tagged surgical instruments was used for 27 months in clinical areas. In total, 13 study participants assembled surgical trays in the central sterile supply department.

Findings

While using the management system, trays were assembled 94 times. During this period, no assembly errors occurred. An instrument malfunction had occurred after the 19th, 56th, and 73th uses, no malfunction caused by the RFID tags, and usage history had been recorded. Additionally, the time it took to assemble surgical trays was recorded, and the long-term usability of the management system was evaluated.

Originality/value

The system could record the number of uses and the defective history of each surgical instrument. In addition, the history of the frequency of instruments being transferred from one tray to another was recorded. The results suggest that our system can be used to manage instruments safely. Additionally, the management system was acquired of the learning effect and the usability on daily maintenance. This finding suggests that the management system examined here ensures surgical instrument and tray assembly quality.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to arrive at an understanding of how Japan allowed herself to become involved in a conflict with such tragic proportions, for both Japan and others, as the Second World War.

Design/methodology/approach

In a reconstruction, a series of similarities in widespread, local occurrences within the Japanese authority structure that produced larger‐scale reactions, events that could neither undo nor even attenuate the triggering incidents, are described.

Findings

The “triggers” occurred almost entirely at the tactical level, ignited by small groups or individuals ignorant of implications higher in the hierarchy of possible outcomes. Emphasized is the causative factor of formalized insubordination, or gekokujô.

Originality/value

The thrust of the paper is to interpret exactly how Japan's lost war against China and the Western Allies began. There may be lessons in this analysis for institutions and organizations outside the military sphere when contemplating new initiatives, especially major departures.

Abstract

A general framework for mobile Web services ‐ which are Web services with the ability to migrate from one host to another ‐ is proposed. In this framework, a mobile Web service is composed of a combination of a BPEL process description, service components to be carried, and migration behavior descriptions using simple but expressive rules. The semantics of the descriptions are defined using Mobile Ambients, namely, a formal model of concurrent mobile processes. With this framework, it is thus possible to add or change migration behaviors without having to modify the BPEL process.

Abstract

What were the spinning industries like in the initial stage in Japan? From which class did the founders of these industries come, ex‐warrior or commoners (merchants or farmers)? This will interest readers. Viewed from a capital investment, it was most significant in Japan whether the government financed an industry or not. This article deals with Tanigawa Tatsumi, the founder president (presidency 1885‐1911) of Okayama Cotton Spinning Company (an enterprise for employing ex‐warriors). Whereas cotton spinning companies for employing ex‐warriors played an important role in the initial stages of the development of the cotton spinning industry, these became bankrupt before long. Under such circumstances, Tanigawa’s Spinning Company weathered many years. An examination of a brief history of Okayama Spinning Company with special reference to Tanigawa’s life history will reveal the significance of the entrepreneur’s learning and virtue, organizing ability, and leadership. Furthermore, it will make clear what otherwise might have been overlooked about the initial nature of industrialization in Japan.

Abstract

Purpose

Today, industrial revolutions demands advanced technologies, means, mediums, tactics and so forth for optimizing their operating behavior and opportunities. It is probed that the effectual results can be seized into system by not only developing advance means and technologies, but also capably adapting these developed technologies, their user interface and their utilization at optimum levels. Today, industrial resources need perfect synchronization and optimization for getting elevated results. Accordingly, present study is furnished with the purpose to expose quality-driven insights to march toward excellence by optimizing existing resources by the industrial organizations. The present study evaluates quality attributes of mechanical machineries for seizing performance opportunities and maintaining competitiveness via synchronizing and reconfiguring firm's resources under quality management system.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, Kano’s integrated approach is implemented for supporting decision rational concerning industrial assets. The integrative Kano–analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach is used to reflect the relative importance of quality attributes. Kano and AHP tactics are integrated to define global relative weight and their computational medium is adapted along with ratio analysis, reference point theory and TOPSIS technique for understanding robust decision. The study described an interesting idea for underpinning quality attributes for benchmarking system substitutes. A machine tool selection case is discussed to disclose the significant aspect of decision-making and its virtual qualities.

Findings

The decision executives can realize massive benefits by streaming quality data, advanced information, technological advancements, optimum analysis and by identifying quality measures and disruptions for gaining performance deeds. The study determined quality measures for benchmarking machine tool substitute for industrial applications. Momentous machine alternatives are evaluated by means of technical structure, dominance theory and comparative analysis for supporting decision-making of industrial assets based on optimization and synchronization.

Research limitations/implications

The study linked financial, managerial and production resources under sole platform to present a technical structure that may assist in improving the performance of the manufacturing firms. The study provides a decision support mechanism to assist in reviewing the momentous resources to imitate a higher level of productive strength toward the manufacturing firms. The study endeavors its importance toward optimizing resources, which is an evident requirement in industries as the same not only saves money, escalates production, improves profit margins and so forth, but also gratifies the consumption of scarce natural resources.

Originality/value

The study stressed that advance information can be sought from system characteristics in the form of quality measures and attributes, which can be molded for gaining elevated outcomes from existing system characteristics. The same demands decision supports tools and frameworks to utilize data-driven information for benchmarking operations and supply chain activities. The study portrayed an approach for ease of utilizing data-driven information by the decision-makers for demonstrating superior outcomes. The study originally conceptualized multi-attributes appraisement framework associated with subjective cum objective quality measures to evaluate the most significant machine tool choice amongst preferred alternatives.
