Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the effect of housing environment on residents’ satisfaction and happiness using the data collected from selected residents of Gurugram, an urban locality in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the convenience-cum-judgmental sampling technique, data was collected from 321 residents of 17 gated private housing estates and tested by performing factor analysis and partial least squares – structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results revealed that maintenance service at housing estates significantly influences residents’ satisfaction followed by social infrastructure, dwelling attributes and residential amenities, whereas the accessibility aspect has no significant impact on residents’ satisfaction and happiness. Results also show a significant impact of social infrastructure on residents’ happiness, and most notably, residents’ satisfaction has a significant influence on their happiness.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study are likely to provide valuable insight into housing stakeholders (government officials; real estate developers; property and construction professionals, i.e. planners, architects and maintenance managers) to improve the attributes in urban housing setting and neighborhood facilities to upsurge the residents’ satisfaction and happiness level toward the housing estates and townships, which leads to quality and happiness in residents’ life.

Originality/value

According to the authors’ knowledge, the present study is the first to provide an inclusive way toward showcasing the key antecedents of residents’ satisfaction and happiness in the Indian urban housing context. Authors anticipate that future researchers will find present research as a valuable contribution to the residents’ satisfaction and happiness in urban housing planning and revitalization of urban locations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to measure the influence of peers, and the Government and non-governmental organization (NGO) initiatives on an individual’s attitudinal drivers such as environmental knowledge and environmental concern, which are the reasons for their green purchasing intentions. This concept was applied among the Indian young consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

For the research, a structured online questionnaire was used to obtain responses from 342 Indians from various cities. The participants were 20-25 years of age. SPSS software package was used to refine the data while SmartPLS was used to test the validity of the hypotheses.

Findings

The findings revealed that the Government and NGO initiatives along with peer influence do have a significant effect on a consumer’s environmental knowledge and environmental concerns. Further, this study found a significant positive effect of environmental knowledge and environmental concern on perceived value. In turn, the perceived value had a direct positive impact on green attitude leading to green purchase intention.

Practical implications

This paper provides critical insights for marketers, as well as for governmental agencies and NGOs promoting the conservation of the environment through environmental-friendly practices. These parties aim to generate greater awareness among consumers and impart knowledge about the benefits of green practices.

Originality/value

The studies measuring the impact of external factors on green consumption are scarce. Even the few studies available have measured the direct impact of external factors on green purchase intention. Governmental and NGO initiatives along with peer influence are the stimuli impacting operational factors such as environmental knowledge, environmental concern, perceived value, and green attitude, which, in turn, lead to the response of green purchase intention. This study provides new insights to this relationship by using a stimulus – organism – response framework.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study examines the foremost determinants of teachers' perception, i.e. teachers' satisfaction, attitude and continuance intention towards adopting e-learning in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through online Google forms from 1,111 (1,060 considered useable) teachers of different HEIs in India using the purposive sampling technique and was analyzed by PLS-SEM (performing partial least squares-structural equation modeling).

Findings

Results of this study show that perceived usefulness (PU) followed by institutional support, perceived ease of use (PEOU), and teacher-student interaction positively and significantly impact teachers' satisfaction. Results also revealed that perceived usefulness (PU), institutional support, and satisfaction significantly affect teachers' attitude. Finally and most notably, teachers' continuance intention towards using online teaching in HEIs is most significantly influenced by teachers' satisfaction than perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), and attitude.

Originality/value

The authors anticipate that this study brings a significant and valuable input to the existing literature by providing inclusive research in a more harmonizing understanding of the teachers' satisfaction, attitude, and continuance intention with online teaching-learning practices in diverse educational institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the reflection of plane waves in an initially stressed rotating thermoelastic diffusive medium with micro-concentrations and two-temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-dimensional model of generalized thermoelasticity is considered. The governing equations are transformed into the non-dimensional forms using the dimensionless variables. Then, potential functions are introduced for the decoupling of the waves. Further, appropriate boundary conditions are assumed to completely solve the problem. Finally, numerical computations are performed using MATLAB.

Findings

The problem is solved analytically and it is found that there exist five coupled waves in addition to an independent micro-concentration wave in the considered medium. The amplitude ratios and energy ratios of these reflected waves have also been computed numerically for a specific material.

Originality/value

The modulus values of amplitude ratios are presented graphically to exhibit the effects of angular velocity, initial stress, two-temperature, diffusion and micro-concentration parameters. The expressions of energy ratios obtained in explicit form are also depicted graphically as functions of angle of incidence. The law of conservation of energy at the free surface during reflection phenomenon is also verified.

Abstract

Purpose

This review aims to synthesize the brand hate literature and suggest directions for future research on brand hate.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted an integrative literature review method to synthesize and assess the brand hate literature.

Findings

The synthesis showed that social identity theory, disidentification theory and duplex theory are prominently used in brand hate studies, and a larger portion of brand hate research was conducted in Western countries. Further, brand-related, self-congruity, personal factors, information influence and brand community influence are the major types of antecedents of brand hate which can produce soft or hard consequences. Lexicometric analysis showed causes of brand hate, consumers' negative emotional and behavioral outcomes and community anti-brand behavior as key themes of brand hate research.

Research limitations/implications

The synthesis has followed predefined criteria for the inclusion research papers. Thus, the review is limited to articles that fulfilled the criteria for inclusion.

Practical implications

The finding will help marketers, specially brand managers, craft strategies to handle brand hate.

Originality/value

The brand hate literature is still developing and remains incoherent, suggesting that a synthesized review is needed. This study has systematically reviewed and synthesized the brand hate literature to study its development over time and proposes a framework which provides a comprehensive understanding of brand hate.

Abstract

Purpose

Intervention strategies are designed by policymakers to impact people by effectively changing the environment in which people make decisions. Many government-led agencies and nongovernmental organizations promote behavioral change by adopting social marketing strategies. Social marketing uses the application of commercial ideas to influence the voluntary behavior of individuals. Under these circumstances, this study aims to examine the effect of these emerging brand-building techniques social marketing especially in public campaign.

Design/methodology/approach

This descriptive study collected opinions related to the constructs from 324 respondents across India. This study used statistical package for the social science and Smart partial leased square software to test the validity of the hypotheses.

Findings

The results of this study indicate that when the campaigns target the emotional state of the consumer, he or she crosses all boundaries like physical attributes, service parameter or even any form of assessment and provides incremental value to the campaign, thus forming a favorable behavior.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides insights on how emotional branding can be used for better involvement and relationship building, which leads to long-term engagement with the customers. The marketers can also get facilitated through this study by developing a new perspective of creating their advertisements through emotional branding techniques, especially with a focus on corporate social responsibility in the global environment.

Originality/value

In recent times, marketers have adopted a new communication strategy to build their brand through promotions that might appeal directly to customer’s emotional state, popularly termed as “emotional branding.” This new communication strategy aims at creating and nurturing a relationship between the consumer and the brand by accumulating memories, emotions, personal narratives and expectations.

Abstract

Purpose

The textile industry is one of the largest and most important industrial sectors in India. Because the textile industry consumes large quantities of water and produces highly polluted water discharge, its environmental impact is high. Water is expensive to use, treat and dispose of. Therefore, water conservation and reuse are critical necessity for the textile industry because decreasing water and wastewater treatment and recycling costs can be beneficial.

Design/methodology/approach

This research neutralized the pH during dyeing industry wastewater treatment. The system should be robust to erroneous sensor measurements. A pH meter was developed and used to monitor the pH of wastewater hourly before and after HCl treatment.

Findings

HCl was used to neutralize the pH of wastewater from 9 to 7.5. The amount of HCl was optimized depending on the wastewater. Three wastewater treatment methods were used, namely, HCl, wash water and reverse osmosis (RO) treatments. The HCl treatment was the most effective for decreasing the pH; the wash water treatment was the most effective for decreasing the total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS) total hardness and chemical oxygen demand; and the RO treatment was the most effective for decreasing the biochemical oxygen demand, TDS, TSS, total hardness and Cl concentration.

Originality/value

The pH should be monitored during the textile dyeing because the addition of color to textile fabrics is the most effective at neutral pH. This study evaluated several parameters of wastewater, including pH, color, TSS and TDS. The fabricated digital pH meter provided superior results than conventional measuring devices. The goal was to maintain a neutral pH during dyeing and recycle wastewater to improve environmental sustainability. The newly developed digital pH meter was less expensive and more precise than traditional pH meters. Before reusing and recycling, wastewater underwent ultrafiltration and RO treatment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to perform an experimental investigation on the impact strength, compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength of fly ash-based green composites and to compare with these polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low density polyethylene (LDPE).

Design/methodology/approach

Fly ash-based polymer matrix composites (FA-PMCs) were fabricated using hand layup method. Composites containing 100 g by weight fly ash particles, 100 g by weight brick dust particles and 50 g by weight chopped glass fiber particles were processed. Impact strength, compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength of composites have been measured and compared with PVC, HDPE and LDPE. Impact strength of the FA-PMC is higher than that of PVC, HDPE and LDPE. Structural analysis of pipes, gears and axial flow blade was verified using ANSYS. Barlou’s condition for pipes, Lewis–Buckingham approach for gears and case-based analysis for axial flow blades were carried out and verified.

Findings

Pipes, gears and axial flow blades made form fly ash-based composites were found to exhibit improved thermal resistance (i.e. better temperature independence for mechanical operations), higher impact strength and longer life compared to those made from PVC, HDPE and LDPE. Moreover, the eco-friendly nature of the raw materials used for fabricating the composite brings into its quiver a new dimension of appeal.

Originality/value

Experimental investigation on the impact strength, compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength of fly ash-based green composites has not been attempted yet.

Purpose

This study aims to cover the overall gamut of rapid prototyping processes and biomaterials used for the fabrication of occlusal splints in a comprehensive manner and elucidate the characteristics of the materials, which are essential in determining their clinical efficacy when exposed to oral surroundings.

Design/methodology/approach

A collective analysis of published articles covering the use of rapid prototyping technologies in the fabrication of occlusal splints, including manufacturing workflow description and essential properties (mechanical- and thermal-based) evaluation of biocompatible splinting materials, was performed.

Findings

Without advances in rapid prototyping processes and materials engineering, occlusal splints would tend to underperform clinically due to biomechanical limitations.

Social implications

Three-dimensional printing can improve the process capabilities for commercial customization of biomechanically efficient occlusal splints.

Originality/value

Rapid technological advancement in dentistry with the extensive utilization of rapid prototyping processes, intra-oral scanners and novel biomaterial seems to be the potential breakthrough in the fabrication of customized occlusal splints which have endorsed occlusal splint therapy (OST) as a cornerstone of orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deal with the experimental data related to the friction stir welding (FSW) of marine grade Al-Mg4.2 alloy. Mathematical models are developed to study the individual and interaction effects of input variables on the performance characteristics of joints. FSW parameters are optimized to maximize the yield strength and weld nugget microhardness of the welded joints.

Design/methodology/approach

Response surface methodology is applied to establish the mathematical relationship between six input factors, namely, tool rotational speed, transverse speed, tool shoulder diameter, tool material hardness, tilt angle and pin profile; and two response variables, namely, yield strength and weld nugget microhardness. Six factors–five-level rotatable central composite matrix is used for the design of experiments. The quadratic model is used, as suggested by the design expert software, to express the response parameters as a function of investigated input parameters. The competence of the developed models is verified through analysis of variance.

Findings

The present investigation clearly indicates that the studied input factors have a significant effect on the quality of the joints. The optimal combination of input factors is determined to achieve the desired responses.

Originality/value

This paper teems a new look on tensile and hardness properties of Al-Mg4.2 joints by relating the microstructure, fractrographs and grains distribution with the dynamic recrystallization and plasticized material movement during the FSW process. The outcome of this research will help in seizing the opportunities of joining Al-Mg4.2 alloy using FSW, in the offshore and marine applications.
