Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines differences in the discounts offered during Deal of the Day (DOD) promotion schemes by online retailers based on product category, festival season and the economic status of a country.

Design/methodology/approach

In study 1, the authors conducted three focus group studies and 20 in-depth personal interviews (PIs) to explore consumers' perspectives on DOD. To validate the hypotheses based on the findings of study 1 and collected 515 data points from Amazon.com (313 data points from the United States) and Amazon.in (202 data points from India) in study two. The authors used multinomial linear regression to analyze the data.

Findings

A significant difference in savings for buyers on the purchase of electronic product categories as compared to savings made by them on the purchase of non-electronic product categories during DOD promotional schemes. Electronic products get deeper discounts in the US during festival seasons as compared to non-festival seasons during DOD promotional schemes. In emerging economies discounts offered by e-commerce retailers during DOD offers on electronic items are lesser as compared to those offered during DOD offers made in developed economies like United States.

Practical implications

Managers should avoid offering the same products under DOD during the festive season and non-festive season at similar prices in emerging economies as during festivals customers expect more savings over and above the regular savings.

Originality/value

DOD is offered every day irrespective of the other promotions on e-commerce platforms to boost sales. This study analyses any significant difference in saving for DOD offered during special sales days in emerging and developed economies.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has badly affected the global economy. The use of social capital as a resource to diversify agribusiness to get more customers and improve the agricultural supply chain is a considerable issue to explore. This study aims to develop a comprehensive measurement of social capital and examine its effect on the intention to diversify agribusiness. From a supply chain perspective, it uses theory of planned behavior (TPB) and resource-based view (RBV).

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a mixed-methods approach. In-depth interviews, focus group discussions and surveys are used. Structural equation modeling on a sample of 465 respondents in Vietnam was employed to examine the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

An integrative measurement scale of social capital from an agricultural supply chain perspective is suggested. The study also shows significant causal relationships amongst social capital, motives, TPB's determinants and the intention to diversify agribusinesses in light of supply chain perspectives.

Originality/value

The study offers a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge in the literature on social capital, motives, TPB, RBV and supply chain perspectives. The study was executed in Vietnam, where most farmers are smallholders, family business owners or micro-scale entrepreneurs in agriculture.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review on electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) credibility. Further, the authors propose a comprehensive and integrated model on eWOM credibility.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a systematic review of the extant literature on marketing, sociology and psychology to identify the factors that affect eWOM credibility. Further, the authors developed themes and identified factors which lead to eWOM credibility.

Findings

Four factors were identified, i.e. content, communicator, context and consumer, which affect eWOM credibility. Several variables associated with these four factors were identified, which result in eWOM credibility. Further, the authors developed 22 propositions to explain the causal relationship between these variables and eWOM credibility.

Research limitations/implications

The conceptual model needs empirical validation across various eWOM platforms, i.e. social networking websites, e-commerce websites, etc.

Practical implications

Managers and e-commerce vendors can use these inputs to develop specific design elements and assessment tools which can help consumers to identify credible eWOM messages. Credible eWOM messages, in turn, will increase the “trust” and “loyalty” of the customers on e-commerce vendors.

Originality/value

This paper provides a conclusive takeaway of eWOM credibility literature by integrating multiple perspectives and arguments from the extant literature. This study also presents an integrated model, which provides a theoretical framework for researchers to further examine the interaction effect of various variables, which results in eWOM credibility.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study how consumers process price frames of product bundles (product plus surcharge) and discount offers to weigh contentious positions between the weighted-additive and the reference-dependent models. Further, some research suggests bundling, while others suggest partitioning to be a more effective pricing strategy. This research evaluated the relative influences of different price frames to examine which model is supported and what are the boundary conditions for price framing.

Design/methodology/approach

Two online studies were conducted on Indian adults who had prior experiences of online purchases. They were asked to judge attractiveness of bundles (product along with shipping surcharge). Discounts were shown on the product, the surcharge or on the overall bundle either as partitioned prices or as a bundle.

Findings

Across two studies on low- and high-priced products, discounts on shipping surcharge increased attractiveness of the bundle compared to a similar discount on the product or on the overall bundle, supporting the reference-dependent model. Further, for a low-priced product, bundling increased attractiveness, while for a high-priced product, partitioning was more attractive.

Research limitations/implications

More research is needed to examine whether these results translate to other kinds of products, surcharges or discount promotions and in different populations.

Originality/value

This research makes important contributions to theoretical and practical aspects of bundling and partitioned pricing research. It also adds much needed data about evaluation of product bundles with shipping surcharges among Indian customers.
