Abstract
Purpose
The emerging trend in the global real estate valuation practice has led to the development of advanced valuation approaches to replace the traditional methods. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent to which real estate valuers practicing in Nigeria are aware and use these advanced approaches in real estate valuation practice.
Design/methodology/approach
Both traditional and advanced approaches were identified from the literature. An online-based questionnaire survey was administered on estate surveyors and valuers to measure their level of awareness and frequency of use of the identified valuation approaches. The feedback was collated and analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis.
Findings
The professionals are mostly aware of the traditional methods and always use the “sales comparison method” in practice. In contrast, they are not very aware of the advanced approaches and hence, only use the hedonic pricing model occasionally in practice.
Research limitations/implications
The study only focuses on the Lagos metropolis, a nationwide survey will produce more comfortable generalizable findings.
Practical implications
This is a wake-up call for the real estate regulatory bodies and indeed all the real estate professionals in Nigeria to embrace the use of the advanced valuation approaches in practice, in order to remain relevant in the international real estate practice.
Originality/value
Implementation of the recommendations of this study could help position the Nigerian real estate professionals and the industry for a global exposition.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effects of digital overload on job autonomy and job satisfaction among civil servants in the Nigerian public sector using the job demand–resources model.
Design/methodology/approach
A questionnaire survey was conducted among mid-career and senior-level officers in five federal ministries in Nigeria. The collected data were analyzed by using structural equation modeling partial least squares to test the research hypotheses and necessary condition analysis to assess the necessary conditions for high satisfaction among civil servants.
Findings
The study reveals that the use of information and communication technology (ICT) has a significant positive impact on digital overload. Furthermore, digital overload has a significant negative effect on job autonomy and adversely affects job satisfaction. Additionally, job autonomy partially mediates the relationship between digital overload and job satisfaction. Job autonomy and ICT use were found to be necessary conditions for high satisfaction.
Research limitations/implications
The study acknowledges certain limitations, such as the focus on civil servants in federal ministries in Nigeria and the reliance on self-reported data.
Practical implications
The findings of this study have practical implications for policymakers in the Nigerian civil service. They highlight the importance of reducing digital overload and promoting job autonomy to enhance job satisfaction, as well as to improve the overall performance and efficiency of the public sector.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the detrimental effects of digital overload on civil servants’ job autonomy and satisfaction in the Nigerian public sector. It explores a relatively unexplored aspect of digitalization and emphasizes the need to address the negative implications of digital overload. Additionally, it examines the necessary conditions for high satisfaction among civil servants.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose indices that were freely considered as relevant for the analysis of financial crime-related issues in Nigeria and list them in the questionnaire that was administered across the six geo-political zones of the country to obtain relevant data that are useful for factor analysis of financial crime-related issues.
Design/methodology/approach
The research methodology involved data survey, preparation and normalization. Followed by principal component analysis-based factor analysis and then, results and interpretation.
Findings
The results of factor analysis placed high premium on government policies and regulations, responses and management, capacity building and awareness and litigation as the major issues for safe and secure financial system in Nigeria. Findings from the research also established that systemic ways of ensuring that citizens adopt technical know-how for national development rather than committing crimes should be introduced and enforced by the Nigerian government.
Originality/value
The research formulated some indices and established some models for the analysis.

Abstract
This paper presents a new algorithm for detecting and characterizing potholes and bumps directly from noisy signals acquired using an Accelerometer. A wavelet transformation based filter was used to decompose the signals into multiple scales. These coefficients were correlated across adjacent scales and filtered using a spatial filter. Road anomalies were then detected based on a fixed threshold system, while characterization was achieved using unique features extracted from the filtered wavelet coefficients. Our analyses show that the proposed algorithm detects and characterizes road anomalies with high levels of accuracy, precision and low false alarm rates.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the numerical models and experimental outcomes pertain to the performance of the parabolic dish concentrator system with a modified cavity-type receiver (hemispherical-shaped).
Design/methodology/approach
The numerical models were evolved based on two types of boundary conditions; isothermal receiver surface and non-isothermal receiver surface. For validation of the numerical models with experimental results, three statistical terms were used: mean of absolute deviation, R2 and root mean square error.
Findings
The thermal efficiency of the receiver values obtained using the numerical model with a non-isothermal receiver surface found agreeing well with experimental results. The numerical model with non-isothermal surface boundary condition exhibited more accurate results as compared to that with isothermal surface boundary condition. The receiver heat loss analysis based on the experimental outcomes is also carried out to estimate the contributions of various modes of heat transfer. The losses by radiation, convection and conduction contribute about 27.47%, 70.89% and 1.83%, in the total receiver loss, respectively.
Practical implications
An empirical correlation based on experimental data is also presented to anticipate the effect of studied parameters on the receiver collection efficiency. The anticipations may help to adopt the technology for practical use.
Social implications
The developed models would help to design and anticipating the performance of the dish concentrator system with a modified cavity receiver that may be used for applications e.g. power generation, water heating, air-conditioning, solar cooking, solar drying, energy storage, etc.
Originality/value
The originality of this manuscript comprising presenting a differential-mathematical analysis/modeling of hemispherical shaped modified cavity receiver with non-uniform surface temperature boundary condition. It can estimate the variation of temperature of heat transfer fluid (water) along with the receiver height, by taking into account the receiver cavity losses by means of radiation and convection modes. The model also considers the radiative heat exchange among the internal ring-surface elements of the cavity.

Abstract
Purpose
Second career librarians have emerged from many professions over the years. They have made significant contributions to librarianship as they transfer their years of expertise, knowledge and skills from their former careers into the field. The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors which motivate teachers to leave the teaching profession and make the entrance into librarianship. The findings will be used to justify whether the switch is just a means of acquiring advance education or is a conscious desire to change their career. This research will discover common themes in their experiences and perceptions and draw reasonable conclusions about them.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is a qualitative analysis of data gleaned from in‐depth interviews with teachers who completed the Master in Library and Information Studies degree between 1996 and 2008 at the Department of Library and Information Studies, University of the West Indies in Jamaica. Data were collected using semi‐structured interviews and responses were recorded to facilitate transcription in an effort to detect similar themes in their experiences.
Findings
Findings of this research substantiate existing empirical evidence which highlights better opportunities as a major career motivation for second career librarians.
Originality/value
The paper builds on the literature in second career librarians and offers essential information which should impact library education and library administrators' recruitment policies. The findings of this research are therefore expected to be of value to educators and practitioners in the field of library and information science.
