Abstract

The dream scenario for thousands of businesses would be to gain the ability to get their products to market faster, and to know with some certainty that their product‐development projects would be completed on schedule. Speed and predictability are particularly elusive in new‐product development. In heavily regulated industries, for example, the best‐laid plans may fall apart when the rules change. In industries in which products are intimately related to technological advances, the new thing may become obsolete before it gets through research and development. And in some industries, a shortage of workers with specific skills can seem like a permanent guarantee of falling behind schedule.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of support through enhanced management (StEM) on the safety of people who have committed offences, who reside in the women’s estate prisons in England.

Design/methodology/approach

A matched control study comprising 32 participants investigated the number of safety incidents before and after the implementation of StEM.

Findings

When comparing people in prison who had StEM, to those who had not, there were no significant differences in the number of safety incidents one month after StEM was implemented, compared to the one month before. There was a statistically significant reduction in safety incidents in the three months after StEM was completed, compared to the three months before it was implemented, compared to the matched control group.

Research limitations/implications

This study was not able to achieve the minimum number of StEM cases to obtain sufficient power. The matched control group limited the number of StEM cases that could be included.

Practical implications

StEM has a positive influence on the reduction of safety incidents longer term. Researchers hypothesised that adherence to the StEM policy, collaborative and joined up staff working and investment in the care of people in prison were central to successful outcomes.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the growing evidence about the effective use of the StEM consultancy process within women’s estate prisons. It is the first evaluation of StEM to introduce a matched control group.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze whether average video watch time or click-through rates (CTR) on YouTube videos are more closely associated with high numbers of views per subscriber using linear regressions.

Design/methodology/approach

In 2018, YouTube began releasing CTR data to its video creators. Since 2012, YouTube has emphasized how it favors watch time over clicks in its recommendations to viewers. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first academic study looking at that CTR data to test what matters more for views on YouTube. Is watch time or CTR more important to getting views on YouTube?

Findings

The author analyzed new video releases on YouTube. This paper finds almost no or limited evidence that higher percent audience retention or total average watch time per view, respectively, are associated with more views on YouTube. Instead, videos with higher CTR got significantly more views.

Originality/value

The author knows no other study that tests the relative importance of CTR or watch time per view in predicting views for new videos on YouTube.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to present the existing research on already effective programmatic efforts designed to increase diversity in STEM fields and to subsequently encourage researchers and practitioners to more intentionally build upon and design effective interventions around this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

Previous research findings accredit this success to various forms of support, such as mentors, study groups, student programs and student organizations (Hurtado et al., 2012; Maton et al., 2000; May and Chubin, 2003).

Findings

Higher education professionals have experienced a rise in concern regarding the alarming disparities of minority students pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) majors and careers. Because of this, researchers are interested in exploring and addressing some of the reasons.

Originality/value

Through the discussion of ideas for action and the proposing of a theoretical foundation from the field of student development, the authors offer recommendations for future research and strategies to further improve recruitment, retention and performance for minority students in STEM fields.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on offenders with a dual diagnosis and discuss how prison-based services can improve to better meet the needs of prisoners with co-occurring substance misuse and mental health disorders.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature search of PsycINFO, JSTOR, PubMed and Google Scholar, reviewing international studies on dual diagnosis amongst offender and community samples spanning the last three decades, supplemented by international policy, guidance papers and reports was conducted to explore how services can be improved.

Findings

It was found that research into dual diagnosis amongst prisoners internationally was scarce. However, from the evidence available, several consistent factors emerged that led to the following recommendations: integrated treatment needs to be coordinated and holistic, staged and gender-responsive; increased availability of “low level”, flexible interventions; transitional support and continuity of care upon release with the utilisation of peer mentors; comprehensive assessments in conducive settings; mandatory dual diagnosis training for staff; and increased funding for female/gender-responsive services.

Practical implications

The recommendations can inform commissioners, funders and service providers of areas where support must be improved to address the needs of prisoners with a dual diagnosis.

Social implications

Improved outcomes for prisoners with a dual diagnosis would likely have a positive effect on society, with improvements in mental health and substance misuse treatment impacting on rates of reoffending.

Originality/value

This paper brings originality and value to the sector because it reviews relevant research on dual diagnosis and translates it into practical implications for policy makers.

In connection with the suggestion recently made in the BRITISH FOOD JOURNAL to the effect that a National Pure Food Association should be established it is of importance to call attention to the fact that a society describing itself as the “League for the Defence of Human Life” has been recently formed in Paris with the object of preventing the frauds practised by dishonest traders upon their customers. One of the obligations entered into by the members of the League is to discover and prosecute persons engaged in the sale of adulterated or injurious articles of food and drink. Judging from the recent reports of the proceedings of certain Parisian tradesmen it would appear that a society of this description has much scope for its operations in the French Metropolis, and, as we have suggested, a society with similar objects might with advantage be formed in this country, with branches in all the principal cities and towns. With the legal machinery placed at the disposal of local authorities, cumbrous, inadequate and weak as it is, much more might be done in the way of repression if only the responsible authorities could be brought better to appreciate their duty.

Abstract

On October 26, 2004, the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “Commission” or the “SEC”) adopted a new rule and related amendments requiring, among other things, that hedge fund managers register with the SEC under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, as amended (the “Advisers Act”) by February 1, 2006. In this article, we refer to the totality of the recent rulemaking as the “new rules.” The new rules and a lengthy interpretive release (the “Adopting Release”) were made available to the public on December 2, 2004.The new rules only slightly modify the text of the proposed rules published by the SEC on July 20, 2004. We will refer to the July 20, 2004 rules as the “proposed rules.” The proposed rules, which were opposed by two of the five SEC commissioners at the time they were announced, provoked a loud outcry and strong opposition. According to the Adopting Release, the SEC received 161 comment letters from investors, hedge fund managers, mutual fund managers, law firms, and others. Of these, only 36 supported the proposed rules, 83 argued against them, and the remainder presented a neutral view. The objections included “concerns about the costs of compliance under the new rule[s], questions about [SEC] effectiveness in preventing hedge fund fraud, and the potential intrusiveness of [SEC] oversight of hedge fund managers.”

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of empirical study is to focus on the relationship between perceived private label brand (PLB) image, and perceived store image (SI) and feeling associated with the presence of national brand (NB).

Design/methodology/approach

The data are collected using a self administered questionnaire from respondents belonging to generation Y in their 20s. The focal product was apparels sold at department stores.

Findings

The results indicate that the store atmosphere and store quality positively influence the perception of PLB's quality, whereas, the congruence between national brand and store image (NBSI) has a negative influence on PLB's quality. In comparison, the store quality, store convenience, store price/value, and the congruence between NB and PLB have a positive influence on the affective dimension of the PLB image, whereas, the congruence between NBSI has a negative influence.

Research limitations/implications

A key limitation of this study is the sampling frame. Future studies should replicate this study in different contexts and with different target population.

Practical implications

To boost the image of their PLBs, stores need to focus on the store quality dimension, since it affects both quality and affective dimensions of PLB. Other SI dimensions that have a significant effect on either PLB‐quality or PLB‐affective dimensions are store atmosphere, convenience, and price/value dimensions. Regarding the presence of NBs in a store, even if it is in congruence with the SI, it has a detrimental effect on both the quality and affective dimension of PLB, unless the PLB image and NB image are seen as congruent. Managers should ensure that the NBs carried by their store harmonize with their own PLB image.

Originality/value

This study provides answers to a crucial question – “How to improve the consumer perception of private label brand?”
