This article describes in outline the different approaches used to support the management of information, information systems and information technology. It has a bias towards systems and technology, rather than information, if only because this is where most management effort is focused. Management information per se is neither frequently attempted nor easy.

Prison social environments play an important role in the health of prisoners. How they respond to imprisonment is partially dependent upon how effectively they integrate into an institution’s social structure, learn to fit in with others and adapt to and cope with becoming detached from society, community and family ‐ hence, how they personally manage the transition from free society to a closed carceral community. This paper reports on findings of an ethnography conducted in an adult male training prison in England, which used participant observation, group interviewing, and one‐to‐one semi‐structured interviews with prisoners and prison officers. The research explored participants’ perceptions of imprisonment, particularly with regard to how they learned to adapt to and ‘survive’ in prison and their perceptions of how prison affected their mental, social and physical well‐being. It revealed that the social world of prison and a prisoner’s dislocation from society constitute two key areas of ‘deprivation’ that can have important health impacts.

WE have, of course, been fighting a losing battle. By now it appears that all of the three major political parties are in favour of worker participation at board level. Prettywell everybody is convinced that it is bound to come. So let us, too, assume that that is so and take a look at the implications.

Passport for Windows (PFW) and OCLC Macro Language (OML) are a library software combination that is hard to beat in terms of power and flexibility. PFW provides a desktop where multiple telecommunications (usually telnet) sessions can exist simultaneously, and the OML permits programmatic control and automation of tasks in any individual session as well as data sharing between different sessions. The fact that an entire programming language is available to the OML macro writer is what gives PFW the ability to seemingly work "magic" literally at the touch of a key, especially through the use of conditional logic for automated decision‐making. Not only is OML available in OCLC’s PFW product, but slight variants are available in OCLC’s Cataloging MicroEnhancer and ILL MicroEnhancer products as well. Although the pros of OML far outnumber the cons, there exist some downside issues (documentation, networkability, differences between products) which sometimes make macro writing and use by staff more difficult than it needs to be. In the end, though, all the efforts are worth it, because, by using PFW/OML macros, automation can do what it is good at, thereby giving staff the time and opportunity to do what they are good at.

This register of current research in social economics has been compiled by the International Institute of Social Economics. The register does not claim to be comprehensive but is merely an aid for research workers and institutions interested in social economics. The register will be updated and made more comprehensive in the future but this is largely dependent on the inflow of information from researchers in social economics. In order to facilitate this process a standardised form is to be found on the last page of this register. The purpose of this paper is to review the effectiveness of the various initiatives taken to regulate international mobile roaming over the last decade.

The paper is an analysis of the policies and the measures and their effects on prices and industry dynamics.

The paper finds that economic approaches through both competition law and the current European Union regulatory package failed. However, an ad hoc political initiative by a determined European Commissioner did finally work.

Lack of industry data, disaggregated for roaming, makes it difficult to determine the eventual effects on operators. Further data on revenues and on any increase in demand from price reductions would greatly help understanding.

In this paper the use of a relatively crude policy instrument raises concerns about the use of more sophisticated economic approaches in difficult cases.
