This paper seeks to describe automated lamp manufacturing.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to describe automated lamp manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper provides information on the automated manufacture of incandescent, fluorescent and light‐emitting diodes (LEDs).
Findings
The paper finds that the automated manufacture of conventional lamp types is similar, but LEDs require totally different techniques developed from the semiconductor industry.
Originality/value
The paper should be of value in terms of understanding the basics of automated lamp manufacturing, especially with LEDs, as these will be highly important general lighting products to save energy and provide innovation in lighting design in the near future.

Abstract
Purpose
Climate change policies such as carbon taxes and emissions trading schemes are being developed and implemented in ways which fundamentally transform the profitability of industries and businesses. While mandatory reporting of greenhouse gas emissions by individual Australian companies is now largely standardised, the financial implications of emissions trading and other forms of climate change policy are poorly understood. This paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
A literature review was conducted of financial analyst research on this issue and determined that this poor understanding is the result of either insufficient information being available to adequately evaluate the risk to business or a lack of understanding about how carbon policies will impact on business.
Findings
This paper proposes a “checklist” for evaluation of the risks and opportunities created by pricing carbon to address this analytical chasm. Most importantly, like any significant tax reform, the paper concludes that it is impossible to create simple metrics that can be used across all industries and companies.
Originality/value
The paper outlines, for the first time, a checklist for analysis of the impacts of carbon pricing on Australian businesses.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to look at fibreoptic sensing techniques and applications.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper provides information on fibreoptic sensing technologies, instrumentation, advantages and applications.
Findings
Fibreoptic sensing, especially fibreoptic Bragg gratings, provide a highly effective means of monitoring internal changes in structural and other components that were previously impossible or very difficult to detect. Such systems are now approaching full commercialisation.
Originality/value
The paper provides a useful overview of how fibreoptic sensors work, and the advantages they provide when used in instrumentation applications ranging from compact devices to large and complex structures, where they may be structurally integrated.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to describe the topic of robot kinematics and provide a modern machine.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper examines, in brief, kinematics and robot kinematics, classes, constraints and chains to provide an introduction. An example shows how robot kinematics can benefit the design of advanced machines for industry.
Findings
Robot kinematics, in conjunction with mathematics and other disciplines, lead to a greater understanding of robotics design and control.
Originality/value
This paper discusses robot kinematics in brief as a robot design topic in its own right, as well as presenting the Gantry‐Tau robot as a new and interesting kinematic development. As such, the article should be of general interest to robotics engineers and designers.

Abstract
Purpose
Examines the wide range of liquid and solid level sensors, their technologies and commercial application.
Design/methodology/approach
Provides background information on trends in level sensing, on how each type works and the various applications. Some selection criteria are given.
Findings
There is a wide range of level sensors for every target liquid and solid sensing application, but the sector is technologically mature. There are some new application areas deriving from legislation and climate change.
Originality/value
Provides information of value for those involved with sensor applications.
The aim of this paper is to provide an update on the status of current fieldbuses and high‐speed Ethernet technologies for industrial automation.
Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to provide an update on the status of current fieldbuses and high‐speed Ethernet technologies for industrial automation.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper provides information on the various fieldbus technologies for industrial automation connectivity and examines high‐speed deterministic Ethernets for automated manufacturing and assembly plant.
Findings
The paper finds that the standards issue has still not been fully resolved, that Ethernets reduce manufacturing costs compared with conventional fieldbuses, that most effort has gone into making Ethernets work deterministically, rather than concentrating on IT and enterprise resource planning (ERP) integration, and that the internet will increasingly feed real‐time data to ERP levels.
Originality/value
The paper provides information on recent developments in Ethernet technologies.

Abstract
If complaints about an agent’s sale of “ABC” mutual fund are handled by the state securities commissioner… Why should complaints about the same agent’s sale of a variable annuity invested in “ABC” mutual fund be handled exclusively by the state insurance commissioner? Are state laws enacted 35 years ago still relevant today when most agents who sell variable annuities are also licensed to sell mutual funds?

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a retrospection on the importance, origins and development of the research programs in the author’s career.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses an autobiographical approach.
Findings
Most of the articles, research monographs and books that constitute this research and publishing efforts can be categorized into seven distinct, but related, research programs: channels of distribution; marketing theory; marketing’s philosophy debates; macromarketing and ethics; relationship marketing; resource-advantage theory; and marketing management and strategy. The value system that has guided these research programs has been shaped by specific events that took place in the author’s formative years. This essay chronicles these events and the origins and development of the seven research programs.
Originality/value
Chronicling the importance, origins and development of the seven research programs will hopefully motivate and assist other scholars in developing their own research programs.

Abstract
A recently published survey found that slightly over 14 million persons age 16 or over hunted in the United States in 1991 and spent over $12 billion on hunting. By comparison, the same survey determined there are over 35 million anglers. Another source estimates that nearly 18 million participants age seven and older hunted with firearms in 1992. That ranks hunting well below the participatory sports of swimming, bicycling, and bowling in popularity, but ahead of football, skiing, tennis, and target shooting. Estimates vary, and while these numbers are substantial, they indicate that hunters comprise well under ten percent of the total U.S. population. Hunters have come under increasing fire from animal rightists and others who claim the sport is cruel and unnecessary. Hundreds of articles and a number of books have been written in recent years on both sides of the issue, or, more accurately, all sides. Many writers as well as the population at large see hunting as not entirely “good” or “bad” but some of each, depending upon the context.
