Abstract
Purpose
Within the framework of image reconstruction in cylindrical electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) sensors, the purpose of this study is to select the structure of a sensor in terms of number and size of the electrodes, to predict the radius and the position of a single circular shape lying in the cross-section defined by the sensor electrodes.
Design/methodology/approach
Nonlinear black-box models using a set of physically independent capacitances and least-square support vector machines models selected with a sophisticated validation method are implemented.
Findings
The coordinates of circular shapes are well estimated in fixed and variable permittivity environments even with noisy data. Various numerical experiments are presented and discussed. Sensors formed by three or four electrodes covering 50 per cent of the sensor perimeter provide the best prediction performances.
Research limitations/implications
The proposed method is limited to the detection of a single circular shape in a cylindrical ECT sensor.
Practical implications
This method can be advantageously implemented in real-time applications, as it is numerically cost-effective and necessitates a small amount of measurements.
Originality/value
The contribution is two-fold: a fast computation of a circular shape position and radius with a satisfactory precision compared to the sensor size, and the determination of a cylindrical ECT sensor architecture that allows the most efficient predictions.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a rapid method for calculating capacitive sensor signal variations for any small permittivity or electrode modifications at any position in space.
Design/methodology/approach
When a capacitive sensor is probing its surrounding, the modification of the permittivity, the displacement or the deformation of one or more electrodes induce a signal variation which depends on the position of the modification. Seeing that modification as a small perturbation and using Gauss identity, it is possible to find integral expressions of the sensor sensitivity map.
Findings
Capacitive sensor sensitivity map expressions depend only on the perturbation to measure, on the electric field before the perturbation, and on a sensitivity field which is the electric field produced by the sensor when the measuring electrode is held to 1 V while the others, except the floating ones, are grounded. The sensitivity field is a kind of Green's function for the capacitive sensor. The knowledge of the electric and sensitivity fields makes it possible to obtain the whole sensor sensitivity map at once without requiring time consuming parametric calculations.
Originality/value
The sensitivity field calculation provides a simple and direct view of the capacitive sensor capabilities. That should improve capacitive sensor design.

Abstract
The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 208 includes directives rendering the morphological estimation of passengers mandatory for advanced air bag systems. The dynamic automatic suppression system uses both the morphological and positional information about the passenger to allow or prevent air bag deployment. Various solutions have been proposed to obtain these information by using capacitive sensors. This paper presents a method, that makes possible use of such sensors in the car industry by correcting their responses from these perturbing parameters.

Abstract
WE have now received the skeleton programme of, and the invitations to, the Annual Meeting of the Library Association which opens at Harrogate with a service at the Parish Church on Sunday, September 17th. The arrangements that are to be made locally are attractive; the picture of the interior of the Royal Hall, which we receive with the list of hotels and boarding houses, seems to promise a useful meeting place where perhaps the acoustics will be better than those to which we are normally accustomed at conferences. The Majestic Hotel, which has been chosen as headquarters, is not quite so expensive as some hotels which have hitherto been chosen although it is not cheap, and it has the advantage of being quite near to the meeting place.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to model the dynamic path of adjustment towards pre‐unemployment levels of wellbeing for a group of full‐time workers who experienced job loss.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on data from the German Socio‐economic Panel, a large‐scale panel survey, the paper captures the non‐linear nature of the adaptation process by using an Exponential Smooth Transition Autoregressive (ESTAR) model.
Findings
The study finds that adaptation takes place in a non‐linear fashion, with the speed of adjustment being higher for high earners, those with high pre‐unemployment levels of life satisfaction and those who were most satisfied with their jobs before becoming unemployed. It also finds that most of the adaptation takes place during the first year of unemployment, with adaptation speeds decreasing with unemployment duration, suggestive of possible habituation effects being present.
Originality/value
This is the first study to model the dynamic path of adjustment towards pre‐unemployment wellbeing levels as a non‐linear process. Despite the challenge posed by adaptation theory and the recent interest in the wellbeing effects of job loss, there is only sparse empirical evidence on the dynamics of the adaptation to unemployment process.

Abstract
There is a tacit understanding among social studies teachers and educators that incorporating primary source documents in planning and teaching is desirable for many reasons, most prominent among them the ways in which it challenges students to think at higher levels. This study is a descriptive study of public school teachers’ uses of primary source documents in social studies planning, in which we review lesson activities of various grade level teachers to evaluate their use of primary documents for higher order cognitive purposes. Given the salient theme of critical thinking in the literature, we established a baseline continuum of uses that served as our framework for evaluating these activities. We asked the following questions: When history teachers incorporate the use of primary source documents in their planning, to what degree do they promote development of higher level critical thinking? What might a planned activity look like when they do? We found that the majority of the activities examined here employ primary source documents for lower order purposes but held the promise of easy transition to higher order uses.

Purpose
The paper aims to address the tracking algorithm based on deep learning and four deep learning tracking models developed. They compared with each other to prevent collision and to obtain target tracking in autonomous aircraft.
Design/methodology/approach
First, to follow the visual target, the detection methods were used and then the tracking methods were examined. Here, four models (deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN), deep convolutional neural networks with fine-tuning (DCNNFN), transfer learning with deep convolutional neural network (TLDCNN) and fine-tuning deep convolutional neural network with transfer learning (FNDCNNTL)) were developed.
Findings
The training time of DCNN took 9 min 33 s, while the accuracy percentage was calculated as 84%. In DCNNFN, the training time of the network was calculated as 4 min 26 s and the accuracy percentage was 91%. The training of TLDCNN) took 34 min and 49 s and the accuracy percentage was calculated as 95%. With FNDCNNTL, the training time of the network was calculated as 34 min 33 s and the accuracy percentage was nearly 100%.
Originality/value
Compared to the results in the literature ranging from 89.4% to 95.6%, using FNDCNNTL, better results were found in the paper.

Abstract
AT intervals the rules and regulations of libraries should be scrutinized. They are not in themselves sacrosanct as is the constitution of the Realm, but many exist which no longer have serviceable qualities. Nevertheless, so long as a rule remains in force it should be operative and its application be general and impartial amongst readers; otherwise, favouritism and other ills will be charged against the library that makes variations. This being so, it is imperative that now and then revision should take place. There is to‐day a great dislike of discipline, which leads to attacks on all rules, but a few rules are necessary in order that books may be made to give the fullest service, be preserved as far as that is compatible with real use, and that equality of opportunity shall be given to all readers. What is wanted is not “no rules at all,” but good ones so constructed that they adapt themselves to the needs of readers. Anachronisms such as: the rule that in lending libraries forbids the exchange of a book on the day it is borrowed; the illegal charge for vouchers; insistence that readers shall return books for renewal; the rigid limiting of the number of readers' tickets; or a procrustean period of loan for books irrespective of their character—here are some which have gone in many places and should go in all. Our point, however, is that rules should be altered by the authority, not that the application of rules should be altered by staffs. The latter is sometimes done, and trouble usually ensues.

A SPLENDID conference, I thought. True, there were those who complained, those who thought some of the papers were elementary and those who thought that we had come a long way to learn very little. I don't agree at all. Some of the papers did, I admit, deal with basic considerations but it does nothing but good to re‐examine the framework of our services from time to time. In any case other papers were erudite, and for the first time I have seen an audience of librarians and authority members stunned, almost, into silence.
