Abstract
This paper reviews innovative research done during the past few years on automatic detection of traffic incidents by the author and his associates using data obtained from sensors embedded in intelligent freeways. A multi‐paradigm intelligent system approach is employed to solve the complicated and chaotic pattern recognition problem using neural networks, fuzzy logic, and wavelets. Wavelet‐based de‐noising and feature extraction techniques are employed to eliminate undesirable fluctuations in observed data from traffic sensors. The result is reliable algorithms with high incident detection and very low false alarm rates.

Abstract
The authors were motivated to overcome some of the limitations and shortcomings of the existing software systems for management of construction projects. The result is a new generation software system for CONstruction Scheduling, Cost Optimization, and Change Order Management, which is called CONSCOM. CONSCOM uses the recently patented Neural Dynamics model of Adeli and Park as its computational engine for construction cost optimization and advanced software engineering and object‐oriented programming techniques such as framework and pattern. This paper presents some of its recent and innovative capabilities and features. CONSCOM includes an Integrated Management Environment (IME) as its user interface for the effective control and management of construction projects. An example of a highway construction project is presented to demonstrate the unique modelling capabilities of CONSCOM that cannot be modelled by Critical Path Method (CPM) or CPM‐like networks.

Abstract
An interactive menu driven microcomputer program is presented for elastic and inelastic earthquake response spectrum analysis of multistorey and multibay buildings. The program is written in Advanced BASIC on an IBM Personal Computer with one disk drive. The program can perform the following:

Abstract
The goal of concurrent or simultaneous engineering is to move a product concept based on a market need to a manufactured and marketable product in the shortest possible time and with minimum cost. The concurrent engineering approaches, processes, and systems should find increasing practical applications in the coming years. Several recent technological advances should help expedite this process.
