Strategy Process – Shaping the Contours of the Field

Bala Chakravrthy, Guenter Muellwe-Stewens, Peter Lorange and Christoph LechnerBlackwellISBN: 1-405-10067-2£29.99

This book contains 11, essentially academic, articles by members of the Strategic Management Society Interest Group on Strategy Process. They explore a number of key questions that attempt to identify the most important opportunities for research on strategy process. In addition, the articles are concerned with exploring the most effective way to build bridges between academics, business people and consultants. It is an impressive study but:

  • it is a study of the process of research into strategy, rather than a treatise on strategy development (though, of course, there is substantial overlap and many of the chapters do integrate strategy "content" and process); and

  • it is aimed at those who have a serious interest in the development of strategy, rather than busy, practising managers.

The book points the way toward promising new directions in research on strategy process, including longitudinal analyses and evolutionary dynamics. It is interesting background reading for many, but only essential reading for scholars of the strategic management process.
