Way back in the mists of time, I raised the problem of remembering all my PINs and passwords – at my advanced age, and with the burgeoning number I seem to accumulate, this gets more difficult. Replies and suggestions came flooding in from Work Study readers … the two most common suggestions were simple coding, writing a PIN down somewhere for reference after adding one (or two) to each digit; and disguising, by writing down a PIN as part of a dummy telephone number. The coding works with alphabetic characters by moving one or two along in the alphabet. Now, if only I could remember the algorithm I used …
