No noise is good noise

No noise is good noise

We all know (think?) that noise is a distraction, and even at times a danger, yet we also know that our children prefer to play music (even loud music) while doing their homework and other tasks that require concentration. There is at least anecdotal research that suggests they may be right - that some level of noise "drowns out" the intermittent lower level "atmospheric" and "environmental" noises but I have not seen anything conclusive. If any Work Study reader can point me at some sound (sorry about the pun!) research findings, it would be helpful.
