Web guru Philip Greenspun offers a comprehensive look at Web publishing with techniques and examples gleaned from his experience of developing over 70 Web sites. First he discusses the preliminary issues in creating a great site by covering what every designer needs to know (?) about writing, photography, publishing, Unix system administration, relational database management systems (RDBMS), user interface design, and computer programming. Then Greenspun helps them decide what sort of site to design, its purpose and goals, and the types of hardware and software tools and systems needed to get the job done. The book is richly illustrated with colour photographs from Greenspun's personal collection, and humorously takes Microsoft and the Media Lab at MIT to task, as well as recounting many of the technical mistakes made throughout his career that will help readers avoid them in their own.
