Arka Technologies launches revolutionary Smartshield™ EMI shielding product

Arka Technologies, specialists in the design and production of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding products, has launched the Smartshield – a revolutionary, multi- cavity, board-level EMI shielding product.

Made from recyclable materials, the Smartshield is RoHS and WEEE compliant and can be used in a myriad of applications, such as laptops, mobile phones, PDAs and WLAN. Smartshield is a cost effective alternative to the chassis and lid classic combination.

The shield consists of a deep drawn stainless steel, copper or nickel silver, which can be deep drawn to various depths into a single or multiple labyrinth configuration. The technology can be stamped and formed to virtually any design.

Manufacturing the shield from a stainless steel or nickel silver metal ensures superior short and long-term shielding and attenuation properties. The inside can be selectively insulated to customer drawings.

Smartshield uses an innovative attachment mechanism that uses 0Ω (zero) resistors, as individual mechanical features hold the shield down firmly. This results in a relatively narrow ground trace, permitting multi-cavity solutions, and removable shields.

The Smartshield is fastened to a PCB via a patented attachment mechanism using individual resistors, which are picked and placed onto the board using the standard SMT process. The slugs or 0Ω (zero) resistors supplied on a standard tape and reel format fit directly onto any SMT machine.

The small slug sizes result in narrower ground traces that assist small and intricate product design, and can reduce FR4 real estate in multi- cavity solutions.

Smartshield installs after the SMT reflow process, allowing for easy component inspection or repair and is easily removed by hand, up to 20 times. Smartshield also reduces rework on field return time.
