Keywords Conservation, British standards
BS 7913: 1998 sets out the philosophical framework for the conservation of historic buildings. An introduction reviews the historical context of conservation and is followed by some definitions. Following an outline of the legal framework the objectives of conservation are considered. Conservation is justified on cultural, economic and environmental grounds and each of these is considered in some detail. Finally the publication outlines some practical conservation principles which include minimum intervention, systematic care, and a presumption against restoration. Guidance for new works adjacent to conserved works is given as are recommended procedures for the preparation and management of conservation works. For those working in the conservation area this British Standard is essential reading.
