Building Research Establishment
Have you ever considered the risk of lightning when carrying out a building survey either residential or commercial? Lightning does not strike twice but once is probably sufficient to give you a nasty shock. BRE 248 Protecting Buildings against Lightning gives you the basic facts.
Ever thought of the alternative life? BRE IP6/98 tells us about alternative refrigerants remember that a new EC Regulation may prohibit the continued use of CFCs worth a read even by the everyday building surveyor.
Wood-boring insects (woodworm to you and me) come under the BRE microscope in Good Repair Guide Pt I & Pt II (Identify & Treat). Great stress is rightly put on the use of preservatives and on the need to, after a COSHH assessment has been made. Essential knowledge especially for those appointed as planning supervisors.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, BRE is leading an EC project on Natural Ventilation. According to BRE, many developers and their architects are missing out on the benefits of natural ventilation, not least cost and to this end BRE will be publishing practical solutions, which will take the form of "smart" technology systems, a guide book and an interactive CD-Rom. Contact D. Earle Perera, at BRE 01923 664877.
BRE are also hosting another EC initiative on concrete construction, in situ, precast, hybrid and innovative. All this at Cardington probably worth organising a visit by your local RICS or other branch. Contact Suzy Edwards 01923 664390.
The Guarantee Protection Trust, working with the British Wood Preserving and Damp Proofing Association, remind us that as a result of global warming, wood-boring insects are marching further north as the area of north of Watford (which includes Scotland) becomes warmer. Northerners watch out for House Longhorn Beetle, Death Watch Beetle and other beasties. As we have read in the press, even the termite, previously not found north of the Channel has been found in North Devon. Another advantage of joining the EU?
