Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been widely studied and developed from many other related fields over the past 20 years. Although lots of books were published on this topic, only a few books focused on the design principles for scattered systems. This book, “Wireless Sensor Networks: Design Principles for Scattered Systems”, addresses all core design concepts and principles of WSN.
Running to about 200 pages, the book is comprised of eight chapters. All chapters examine the following topics: energy-efficient access, source design and modeling, sensor network management and its routing, localization and distributing, data forwarding and compression, and synchronization and data security. The book is not only well-structured but also well-written with high-quality figures and examples. Thus, there is no doubt that it is considerably helpful for researchers of scattered systems.
Each chapter examines a specific current topic at an advanced level. After the preface, Chapter 1 addresses an overview of what sensor networks are. Besides existing fields in which sensor networks are being used, sensor networks are likely to be applied in various fields such as medical applications of the future. Chapters 2 and 3 cover the area of efficient design and techniques for sensor networks and medium access. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the latest engineering methods and issues of WSN regarding data routing and management, positioning and localization of sensor networks. Developers of sensor networks will find this chapter fully useful for improving their knowledge as well as techniques. Chapters 6-8 examine the most important issues in: recent WSN; data aggregation and compression; synchronization for real-time systems; and security. In particular, Chapter 8 examines the security of WSN in scattered systems. As the significance of security in communication networks is being underscored recently, this chapter will be contributive to system engineers as well as to data management engineers.
This book is suitable for a dramatically growing community of designers, engineers and researchers who learn and develop sensor networks in scattered systems by suggesting well-written guidelines for them. Also, it will be helpful for university students in advanced engineering courses. With this book, readers will obtain an educational engineering background in a basis of electronic and computer communications. The book can be recommended to readers of Sensor Review Journal, too. As specialists of sensor networks, engineers and researchers are being faced with the practical issues of using sensor networks in scattered systems. The book provides detailed and precise solutions to them. This guide is highly useful and examines comprehensive, fundamental concepts and methods in the WSN fields.
