It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Don Braggins at the age of 70 as a result of an inoperable brain tumour. Don had been an Associate Editor of Sensor Review for many years and in April 2002 he received an “Outstanding Service Award” for his contributions to this journal. Don was a world authority on all things associated with machine vision, and his death will be a great loss to the international vision community that holds him in such high regard and with great affection.
His original involvement with the application and marketing of image analysis equipment dates back to 1964 and the very beginnings of this area of technology. Don set up his independent consultancy specialising in image processing and analysis at the beginning of 1983. Prior to that he was Product Marketing Manager for image analysis products at Cambridge Instruments. He graduated from Clare College, Cambridge, and was a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. He also helped found the UK Industrial Vision Association, and more recently, the European Machine Vision Association.
As a consultant Don would hold the hand of companies investing in machine vision systems. Opening their eyes to the potential of what was initially very new technology, and making sure that the best choice of supplier was made. In this way, he had a very significant constructive influence on the development of the machine vision industry.
Clients varied from multinationals in the automotive, packaging and photographic industries, to small start-up (and even pre-start-up) operations, from venture capital providers to machinery manufacturers, and geographically have ranged from Sweden to Italy and from the USA to Taiwan.
Don is survived by his wife Anne, and two children and five grandchildren.
