EvoLogics GmbH
This is the website for the German organization, EvoLogics, which promotes the implementation of innovative concepts of biomimetic research with a focus on underwater communication systems.
The home page lists their four product and development areas: Underwater Acoustics – Lessons learned from dolphins; Bionic Propeller – Lessons learned from bird flight; Fin Ray Effect – Lessons learned from fish fins; and Robotics. A link within each of the four development areas lists further details on the product, including a technical overview. There are also links to News and Events, Partners, and Contact information.
The website is attractive and easy-to-navigate, and EvoLogics’ products and developments are pioneering. However, it is unclear to the site visitor what type of organization EvoLogics is, what their mission and history are, what services they provide, and what products are for sale presently or will be available in the future. Thus, the website could benefit from providing a page or link such as “About Us”, “Our Organization”, “Our Mission”, etc.
Centre for Biomimetics
This is the website for the Centre for Biomimetics at the University of Reading, the first Centre in the UK to bring together engineers and biologists, under one roof, to develop new biologically inspired technologies.
The website gives details on the Centre’s services and their current projects which include bone, expanded starch, food texture, gels, insect sense organs, plant fibres, smart fabrics, and wood.
The site also includes information on staff contacts and their research interests, publications written by Centre members, biomimetic events, positions available at the Centre, and a link to Bionis, the Biomimetics Network for Industrial Sustainability.
BioSensor Applications
This is the corporate website for Biosensor Applications AB, a public Swedish company which develops, manufactures, and sells revolutionary antibody reaction technology systems for the analysis of narcotics and explosives.
Their comprehensive website describes the company’s six vapor and trace detection products used for the application segments of Customs, Police, Prisons, Military, Workplace control and Rehab. The website also contains details on the biosensor technology. There are additional links to BioSensor’s worldwide distributors, press releases, calendar of events, and investor information.
Artificial Muscle Research Initiative
The Artificial Muscles Research Initiative (AMRI) was established by Regents Professor Mohsen Shahinpoor in 1996 and AMRI now resides at the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Maine, USA. The goals of the institute are to develop, design, fabricate, test, and commercialize medical and industrial and domestic products based on biomimetic electrically and/or chemically controllable polymeric artificial muscles, to be used in applications relating to industrial, medical, and domestic problems.
The website is setup as one long page, but is a wealth of information. There are 40 videoclips of different artificial muscle applications, a list of milestone papers and patents on artificial muscles, and links to affiliated scientists and other collaborators, as well as a link to publications. The visitor can request complimentary samples of polymeric artificial muscles directly from Prof. Shahinpoor.
