ULIS launches miniature low-consumption infrared detector
Article Type: New products From: Sensor Review, Volume 29, Issue 2
ULIS of France, a specialist in infrared devices, is launching the UL 03 16 2 (Figure 1) – an innovative, miniature, low-consumption infrared detector. The device is integrated into a flat packaging case and does not require a thermoelectric cooler. It also features an embedded on-chip ADC, thus allowing cost-effective camera development and enabling the use of simplified electronic boards.
The production of the UL 03 16 2 infrared detector (384 × 288 pixels with a pitch of 25 μm) is enhanced by a collective manufacturing process and provides high added value, which makes it possible for thermal camera manufacturers to sell innovative products at highly competitive prices. The detector integrates perfectly into compact, light, low-consumption cameras that are manufactured in large quantities.
The UL 03 16 2 is particularly well-adapted to applications such as night-vision enhancements for vehicles, building inspection, predictive maintenance, surveillance and fire fighting. A patent application has been filed for the detector, covering Europe, the United States, Japan, China and Russia. Current yearly production capacity stands at 1,00,000 units.
The detector is made of resistive amorphous silicon. Its thermal time constant is <7 ms and it features a CMOS multiplexer integrated circuit with ripple imaging operation. The area fill factor is 70 per cent and the spectral response ranges from 8 to 14 μm. The extended detector operating temperature range is from −40 to +60 °C, with a typical array operability of (>99.9 per cent.
The UL 03 16 2 has a typical signal response of 3 mV/K, with a standard deviation of ≤1.5 per cent. The device also offers a user-friendly electrical interface, with a single analogue video output. It weighs <6 g and its overall dimensions are 24.2 × 24.2 × 4.1 mm. It also features an on-chip ADC and TECless operation.
