North American automotive sensor market
North American automotive sensor market
Keywords: Sensors, Automotive industry
According to a study by the Freedonia Group, the demand for automotive sensors in the North American light vehicle OEM market will increase by 7.9 percent per annum to reach $4.6 billion by 2007. The average number of sensors in the typical North American vehicle has almost doubled in the past decade, rising from 18 in 1992 to 30 in 2002. Even so, revenues are expected to exceed sensor count growth rates as the new electronics systems being introduced often require more sophisticated and expensive sensors. The report notes that sensor strategies in the engine, drivetrain and emissions control system areas may change greatly, as OEMs struggle to meet the increasingly stringent mandates of the regulators. Direct engine cylinder pressure management, which relies on sensors capable of directly monitoring the combustion process, could cause some current engine-related sensors to become obsolete, including mass airflow, knock and camshaft position sensors. Safety and security applications promise the greatest growth potential, propelled by new products that are either mandated by regulations or market driven. Key areas include tyre pressure sensors, additional airbag applications, occupant position sensors and headway sensors such as those used in adaptive cruise control systems. However, the US market lags behind Europe in the adoption of advanced active safety systems such as electronic stabilisation programme (ESP) systems or electronic braking systems. The report provides forecasts to 2007 and 2012 in millions of dollars and also analyses economic trends, evaluates market shares and profiles the major industry players.
