In the transport business, space is at a premium. Weight and size determine how many packages or pallets can be loaded onto a truck or aeroplane. Now with the sick VMS 400 volume measurement system, it is possible to quickly and accurately measure the correct volume of a box or package (Plate 2).
The new system consists of two VMD 400 sensor heads with onboard application software installed above the conveyor and no external evaluation PC required. The VMS 420 measures cubic and non-cubic objects with great precision and at transport speeds of up to 3 m/s. Accuracy is within 0.5 cm and the laser is class 2 (eye-safe). Protection is to IP67 when using the mounting hood.

Together with the value provided by a weighing device and the reading from a bar-code scanner, all the information that a transport department requires can be quickly obtained for a wide variety of object shapes and sizes.
The volume measurement is so accurate that it has been certified, legal for trade by International Organisation for Legal Metrology (OIML).
Sick VMS solutions are maintenance free, small and compact, easy to install and available as fully integrated systems. They will measure single objects with ease and there is an option for side-by- side and touching objects.
For a long time, companies that handle parcels and packages have had to estimate the size and volumes of objects. With the new Sick VMS system, estimates are a thing of the past with all that means for efficiency and profitability.
