Keywords: Patents, Temperature sensors

This patent relates to temperature compensation systems for minimizing offset variations in a sensor sensing an operating condition of an internal combustion engine. Such sensors are located in harsh environments and are subjected to widely varying operating conditions but are required to produce consistent results over their entire operating range.

The temperature compensation system for minimizing sensor offset variations includes an engine controller containing a model of sensor operating behaviour over temperature. In one embodiment, the sensor measures differential pressure across a flow restriction mechanism, disposed between an exhaust manifold and an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine. In this embodiment, the sensor is thermally coupled to a structural component of the engine whose operating temperature is readily discernable, e.g. the engine cooling system. Additionally, the engine controller is preferably responsive to transitions of the key switch to gather “hot” and “cold” temperature data. This information is then used to constantly update the sensor model.
