Automation components multinational company strengthens UK operation.
A capacitive proximity sensor featuring teach-in and autotune functionality, to maximize accurate detection of the desired target whilst minimizing effects of other objects and contamination, has been added to the Carlo Gavazzi Tripleshield™ range. Carlo Gavazzi has recently strengthened its presence in the UK market through the acquisition of the Ralcom organization (see Plate 1).
The new Carlo Gavazzi CA18CLC family of sensors is believed to be the first capacitative sensor with a “teach-in” function, allowing it to be set up to ignore a non-conductive foreground medium using a simple push-button based procedure. Additional features that improve performance and reduce maintenance include humidity compensation, and optional dirt and moisture compensation.

The new CA18CLC features Carlo Gavazzi Tripleshield technology to counteract the adverse effects of noise such as electrical interference, high voltage static and mobile phone signals on capacitive sensors. This technology gives the sensors high built in immunity against wire-borne and air-borne noise as well as static discharges. These are particularly prevalent for capacitive sensors in level monitoring.
The new sensors are available in M18 and M30 body sizes both with maximum sensing ranges up to 20mm in the M18 and 40mm in the M30. A simple sensitivity adjustment allows the user to set up the sensor to detect the desired target object at the desired distance. The teach- in function covers adjustment of target and background, the selection of open or closed output, and the automatic detection of load type (NPN or PNP).
The CA18CLC capacitive sensor is sold with 5 year warranty. Sensors operate from 10 to 40 VDC supply and 250mA output current and are available either pre cabled or with an M12 connector. They are rated to IP68 and now withstand an operating temperature of 85°C.
To strengthen support for these and other innovative control products, Carlo Gavazzi Automation has acquired UK distributor Ralcom, and is recruiting further with a view to expanding its UK presence and sales by 50 percent. Ralcom director Nigel Ralf is heading up the expanded UK business, which is located at Carlo Gavazzi's existing UK office and warehouse in Aldershot.
