Optical encoder tiny, accurate, easy to integrate

Keywords: Encoder, Optics

A new, low-cost optical encoder chip that provides higher performance than conventional optical and magnetic encoders, with broader alignment tolerances, is being introduced by MicroE Systems of Natick, Massachusetts, USA.

The ChipEncoder™ (Plate 5) features diffractive optics technology to provide rotary position feedback of 3,300-160,000 counts-per-revolution and 100-1,000 counts-per-millimeter linear feedback for precise, closed-loop motion control. Reportedly the smallest optical encoder kit available, this tiny, PCB mount device has three-channel output which includes a reference mark and broad alignment tolerances for automated assembly with no adjustments needed.

Plate 5 The ChipEncoder™ from MicroE Systems

Suitable for closed-loop motion control and product miniaturization applications not previously considered because of size, performance, and cost, the ChipEncoder™ sensor measures only 6 mm2 × 4 mm H. Unlike mechanical devices, this non-contact SMT encoder exhibits zero wear, backlash, and hysteresis and can replace packaged encoders in many applications.
