Sira signs 3D technology licence for defence and industrial applications with Stereoscopic Image Systems

Keywords: 3D Image processing

Stereoscopic Image System Limited (SIS) and Sira Electro-Optics Limited have signed a technology licence that will allow Sira to use the unique SIS System in the defence and industrial markets.

The SIS System enables the existing single cameras and monitors to capture and display stereoscopic images without electronic modification. As well as visual the 3D images captured can be used in metrology to determine both range and relative size.

The SIS System captures the left and right eye view in the landscape format. These are rotated through 90° and recorded as a single image. The stereoscopic images are displayed using rear and forward projection, CRT and LCD monitors, head mounted displays (HMD) and directly on a computer.

Alan Scrase, Director SIS, said "We are always looking to develop strategic alliances with key players within identified market sectors. Sira is a well known and respected supplier to the defence, space and industrial sectors. The combination of Sira's market expertise and the SIS System will result in a groundbreaking range of products."

Jon Holmes, Sira Business Director for Medical and Industrial Sectors, said "We are very excited about the potential for applying the Stereoscopic Image System's technology to diverse applications such as ophthalmic instruments, nuclear plant inspection and stereo endoscopes for process monitoring."

The patented optical manipulation means that every captured scan and frame contributes to both images thus dramatically improve the perceived resolution of a conventional still or moving picture. It is compatible with film, analogue and digital systems. There are no electronic or physical modifications to the TV, monitor, camera or projector. SIS's main interest is in developing the base technology and welcome enquiries from manufacturers to license the patents for their own use.
