TRW receives Toyota Award for Technology & Development
TRW receives Toyota Award for Technology & DevelopmentKeywords: Automotive, Sensors
TRW was honored with the Toyota Award for Technology & Development for developing a new generation side impact satellite module, a sensor that detects side impact crashes. The new sensor design significantly reduced the size, weight, and cost over previous generation devices. In addition, state-of-the-art-manufacturing techniques were used, thereby greatly simplifying assembly processes – both during sensor manufacturing as well as during vehicle assembly. The TRW Automotive business in Farmington Hills, Michigan, USA developed the sensor which was presented to Toyota as a cost savings initiative. The sensor initially debuted on the 2002 UK and US Corolla and is custom-designed for Toyota. The US Corolla was a new business win for TRW for this product. The new side impact sensor manufactured at TRW's Marshall, Illinois, USA facility launched in December 2001.
John Plant, president and chief executive officer, TRW Automotive, said, "We are honored to receive this technology award from Toyota and continue our tradition of supplying Toyota with inventive products with superior quality. TRW is seeking to be a key supply partner with Toyota around the world, and recognition like this is extremely important to achieving that goal."
