Baumer Electric Limited has launched a totally new concept – a pocket-size line sensor which is more compact, economical and simpler to use than traditional line vision system (Plate 1).

The PosCon ZADM is a completely unique alternative, designed to provide width, left or right edge, centre and web tear measurement, detection and control. Baumer electric's technical manager, Nigel Allen comments: "Offering vision technology with photocell simplicity, the PosCon sensor has full integral operation with ultra compact metal housing containing all the controls, signal processing and a long life infra-red illumination unit. A special reflective foil allows the sensor's light source to return at the same angle, allowing the Poscon to quickly and efficiently measure over a large area with no moving parts. This makes it amazingly simple and cost efficient to install."

He continues: "With the help of the teach-in function via the easy-to-use onboard controls, measuring ranges and switching output, tolerance limits can be read-in and programmed.

"There are three standard ranges, each with its own resolution. The 30mm span has a resolution of just 30 microns, while the 150mm and 350mm have resolutions of 150 and 400 microns respectively. To enable stability, the smallest detectable objects have been set at an amazing 0.3, 1.2 and 4mm."

Highly accurate values are available as an analog output or from the optional RS485 interface. Also, with an integrated polarizing optic option, the PosCon sensor can detect glass and thin plastic films with ease.

The PosCon sensor's edge detection ability makes it ideal for applications such as in the graphics, packaging and textiles industries, where conveyor control and monitoring, product feed control, quality control and product positioning is required.

Position detection is useful for rubber and plastics industries that would benefit from high accuracy and real time loop control. Also, it would enable wood industries to monitor width and inspect "in process", while machine tool businesses could inspect tool, and work parameters in real time to improve productivity.

Width measurement and web tear detection is beneficial across many industries.
