This patent describes a method for computer controlled collision avoidance and warning. It utilises a GPS system to accurately determine the position of an automobile on a road, receives DGPS auxiliary range signals (including correction signals for correcting propagation delay errors in the GPS ranging signals), and pseudolite signals for further improving the position measurements. This combination of GPS, DGPS, and pseudolite signals should allow the automobile's kinematic tracking position to be calculated within centimetre accuracy. The position of the automobile can then be communicated to other vehicles and to a plurality of control centres. The information can be used to identify and evaluate inconsistent driving patterns of the automobile in relation to the other vehicles and can therefore evaluate collision hazards. Further, this information can be used to automatically avoid collisions or to optimise prevention of injury or damage. The operator can be warned by a head-up display and other modes, and may override such signals. An automotive auto-pilot mode can also be provided.
