Applicant: Nippon Seiki Co. Ltd, JapanPatent number: EP1152219Publication date: 7 November 2001Title: Vehicle Navigation Device

This invention relates to a navigation device installed in a vehicle. It includes a sensor which outputs a pulse signal corresponding to a travelling distance of a vehicle; a vehicle display device which displays, based on the pulse signal, vehicle information including the travelling distance; and a navigation unit. The navigation unit receives distance data related to the travelling distance and is obtained by processing the pulse signal to calculate a present position of the vehicle, and controls the vehicle display device to display road traffic information. The navigation unit can also include a display synthesised with the present position on a map. In the case where the navigation unit can not receive the distance data or the pulse signal within the reception period, an estimated value is predicted from the two previous samples. The navigation unit can then calculate the present position on the basis of the estimated value.
